Chapter ten

Small hands reached up onto the edge of the windowsill seat where his mother read him stories and he read stories to his stuffed animals, soft grunts could be heard from the other side of the glass as the child lifted himself up onto the platform. He smiled at his triumph, seeing his breath fog up the glass. He pulled his sleeve over his hand like his father had taught him and wiped the surface clear. Fresh snow covered the yard and forest beyond, and the young man could not be expected to wait another minute until sun rise. Not when the moon was bright and bold in the twilight hour.

He slid from the ledge, determination in his arctic blue eyes while he crept from his bedroom. He wouldn't be in that much trouble if he simply opened the back door for a second. He could crunch down his snow boots into the snow, he could be the first, and then hurry back inside before mom and dad knew he was out there. He knew how to work the lock and turn the doorknob. He had seen them do it a hundred thousand times.

He held his breath; he had to hold his breath as he sneaked pass his parents' opened bedroom door. He didn't want to wake them, because they would tell him it was too early. The owls still hunted and the mouse still coward under the shrub. He had heard the phrase a billion times. He didn't want to make this a billion and one.

The winter air was cool when it hit his face; his cheeks instantly blushed and froze in place. He closed his eyes, opening them again as he carefully walked from the back porch to the edge of the yard. He stared wide-eyed at the wonder of the forest. He would be able to plant his feet into the fresh snow even before the birds. His heart raced with excitement, lifting one booted foot high into the air and then his world went dark.

He felt pain, a burning stinging sensation radiated from his upper arm. He cried out, whimpering as the creature that held him laughed with a low growl. The beast tore into the home; his intent not finished as dark burning eyes scooped out the layout and were met with a flash of purple light. The beast in turn cried, dropping the limp form of the boy at his parents' feet. The mother screamed and dropped to her knees as the father chased after the fleeing creature; one anger fueled shot of light pursuing after it.

The father stopped at the edge of the yard, heart bounding. He knew what had happened to his son and his heart wept. He looked back to his wife; sadness etched in his light orbs. He promised as broken as a promise it would end up becoming that he would find a cure. He would dedicate the rest of his life to making his son whole again. He turned back inside, his wife calling out for his help as their son seized her arms. "The curse is claiming him, my dear." The father picked his boy up from her arms, lifting her as well, "We need St. Mungo's, quickly." They all stepped outside and vanished, leaving behind a torn home and a small boot-print crushed by the ravishing beast now dwelling inside.

OoOoOo

Remus heard Sirius' cries, but the boy did not see the point in defending himself. He had no clue what the beast knew about this situation and to be honest he was tired. Death had welcomed him, and he felt great. There were no rules, he could even prank Peeves back after all the times the ghost had bombarded them with gross things. He knew he would miss the gang when they graduated and moved on with their lives. It was saddening as well as joyful. They would grow, have families, and be healthy. Sirius would move on; Remus always saw him as strong if not a little stubborn. The world loved Sirius; he shined upon them like his counterpart in the night sky.
