Disclaimer: If I owned Death Note it'd be nowhere near as good as it is now. I simply lack Ohba's cleverness and Obata's lovely art style. I do own a Ryuk plushy who gets all the Shinigami-human lovin' that he wants.
Warnings: None, really... this hints at one sided Rem/Misa so i guess that could constitute a ShoujoAi warning... yay my first girl-girl couple! I'm proud! (ahem) Anyhow, some angstyness, too. Beware.
Rating: PG? Pg-13 maybe?
No matter what anyone thought, Misa was not stupid or blind. Too brash, maybe, or too quick to fall in love, maybe too damn zealous and fervent about whatever idea got into her head, but Misa was NOT stupid. Rem knew better.
Rem could see it in the way Misa smiled a little TOO brightly around Light, in the way her voice got just a tad higher around him. Misa was a famous actress in the human realm, after all. Light may have been a master of deception, but Misa could fool mere mortals with the best of them. And that was why people underestimated her.
Only Rem knew how bright she was. Only Rem knew just how strong she was. And only Rem knew how much Misa loved Light.
Yes, she really did love him. Her childish manner and over enthusiasm made it seem like a simple schoolgirl crush, but it actually ran deeper. Even when she forgot about the death note, even after she forgot about how he avenged her parents' death, her love remained. Even though he was a manipulative bastard. Even though he saw nothing but his foolish ideals. Even though, despite the way she pretended, she knew he didn't love her back. Misa could tell it was an act, that he was using her as his pawn. He would take what he needed and do away with her. And Misa let him because she loved him.
Ryuk laughed at her. He called her silly, watched her obsession like it was just another point of interest, another bizarre quality that separated mortal from death god- this unbelievable devotion, this love. But Ryuk simply didn't comprehend it. Not like Rem did.
Rem understood all too well the force that drew Misa to light, that caused her to use the second death note in his name. It was the same powerful force that had drawn Jealous to watch over her day after day until he sacrificed himself to save her. It was the same force that swayed Rem herself.
Love was terrifying. Love was inescapable. Love hurt. Because, no matter what Rem felt, Misa would not return it. Misa would only ever have feelings for Light. For that bastard, that user, that killer, that Prince of Lies. She would follow him over the edge. And Rem was powerless to kill him. Because Misa would die without Light, and Rem would die without Misa.(Not that it mattered. Rem would have died the moment she wrote his name.)
No, Misa was happy pretending, and Rem liked it when Misa was happy. So Misa didn't love her…She could live with that. And to keep things that way… she could die for it, too.
A/N: -- Ha… this is one part Misa character study and one part Rem monologue. I'm so obsessed with the Shinigami, it's not even funny! I love Death note's human characters just as much, but for some reason the only good drabbles I've written so far pertain to human-shinigami-slashyness! Rem is just so... (sigh) I don't know, but I adore her. And Misa... up until very recently I HATED HER GUTS! And then I saw a crazy, obscure parallel between her and a character from a totally unrelated anime... Excel Saga's Excel. Anyways I have a few more Shinigami love stories (kind of) to come, so don't flame me…. Ha-ha, read, review, and etc. I hope you like!
