This is a huge undertaking for me. Don't expect frequent updates; for now, I am posting the prologue to get a feel for what the readers think, and to get some inspirational reviews to help me figure out where I want to go with this.
Spoilers throughout. You have been warned.
Disclaimer: I, Kinkatia, hereby state that I do not own Death Note, but that this plot is solely mine, and hopefully as original as I feel it is.
Prologue
She watched with growing trepidation through the eyes of his cameras. He knew, but had no proof. If he had been working alone, the lack of proof would not have been a problem; he would find it, in due time. But there he was, taking the biggest risk of his life, working alongside his enemy.
But she had all the proof she needed to know that he needed to get out of there, to go back into hiding. Because Kira was there. Kira was working alongside him. Kira knew his face. Kira was out to kill him. And he knew.
Then came that fateful day. The power surged, and all went dark. Her monitors went blank, and fear washed over her during the few seconds before the backup power kicked in. The monitors lit up, reconnecting to the cameras. Hurriedly, she reached for her notebook and pen. It could be nothing, just a normal power failure, but...she knew differently.
The cameras reconnected, and her eyes jumped over the monitors, searching; he was still with the rest of the group, but…the shinigami had gone. Where? Where was it? Her worst fears were realized as she saw it, standing behind Watari, notebook in hand, writing down a name…Watari could not be saved. But perhaps, she could save him
She had to act quickly, if she were to keep him alive. Painfully, she picked up the pen and flipped open the notebook, and clumsily began to write. The shinigami, Rem, was writing as well, another name…
Had she made it in time? She looked up from the notebook, looked to him, to his face. He seemed okay, he was still...
His face contorted in an expression of fear and pain, and he clutched at his chest. As if in slow motion, she watched him fall out of his chair, falling to the floor…only to be caught by Kira. Kira, as he pretended to be terrified, pretended to care, when in reality, it was all his doing…
Her eyes closed, and she doubled over, convulsing with silent sobs. She was too late. He had known, and she had known, but neither of them had been able to do a thing about it. And he was gone…he was gone, and now she had no one to live for…
Behind her, an ugly, distorted figure, shrouded in the shadows, cackled. "You know his name, and you know his face. Why don't you kill him, and get your revenge?"
She shook her head, ignoring the voice. No, she would not follow the path of vengeance. She would follow in his footsteps, and prove to the world that Yagami Light was Kira. It was what he would have wanted, had he known she was still alive.
