Derek managed to wait a full months after Penelope and Kevin's break up to ask her out. It was rough, especially since he'd been thinking about asking her out for months, longer than that if he was being honest with himself.

Their first date had been right out of a movie, they'd just…clicked. There was no weirdness, no uncomfortable move from friends to more the friends. Their relationship changed, of course, it wouldn't have been real if it didn't, but the way they treated they were, who they were together, never really changed.

That included their love of flirting, or bantering and teasing and having fun. Now, though, it could get even more personal than before, because they knew so much more about each other.

Derek knew that Penelope was ticklish on her inner left thigh.

Penelope knew that Derek loved having the back of his neck scratched.

Derek knew that Penelope hated the dark, so he'd bought her a tiny flashlight to keep on her key chain.

Penelope knew that Derek loved football and kept a boxed DVD set of his favorite team on hand for when he'd had an especially hard day.

As they learned more and more about each other, they grew even closer than before. Penelope began to realize that she'd revealed more of herself to Derek than had to any other person in her life. Even her parents hadn't known her as deeply as this man that she'd fallen for in every possible way.

Still, she wasn't going to let him win the mini-battle they were currently having. They'd been arguing over who had the worst ex for 15 minutes and she felt close to losing. She fought back though, enjoying the sweet, crazy banter that flowed so easily between the two of them.

"I can't even believe you're saying that," Penelope said, glaring at Derek from her side of the table, "There is no way Kevin was worse than Cindi."

"Kevin had a "man to man" talk with Rossi," Derek said, even making the air quotes.

Penelope frowned, but came back quick, "Cindi spelled her name with an "i" at the end. Who does that?"

"Kevin got caught naked in a closet at Quantico….and you weren't even in the building."

"Fine, fine, but at least he didn't get so drunk he couldn't stand and then "accidentally" tore her shirt off as she fell to the ground."

Derek chuckled, "okay, that was pretty bad, but I still have one that can top even that."

"Oh yeah, what's that? What could Kevin have possibly done that makes him a worse ex than yours?"

Derek looked at her for a moment, his eyes searching hers, "He was so dumb he let you go."

Penelope couldn't breathe for a moment, "Oh, Derek that's…."

Derek leaned over and stopped her words with a kiss. When he pulled back he was smiling, "I won't make that mistake."

Penelope grinned. Who cared who the worst ex was when Derek was her present?
