Shang as conversationalist.
by Ikuko

Disclaimer: I do not own Mulan. Darn.

I was watching the movie while preparing for stats exam (please, do not repeat it at home, I am a trained professional) and the two got somewhat mixed up. Here is the result, some stats on Shang's communication ability:

Shang appears in 9 scenes during the movie. He delivers 63 phrases, in average 2.71 words each (close to "e" number). I've grouped some of his expressions by the meaning. Most common groups were verbal threats (x4 times), threats with an assault weapon (arrow, sword, etc.)(x5 times) and orders to hit the road (the latter include ("move out")x3 times, ("we are moving out")x2 times and ("go home")x2 times).

In every appearance, he has 44% chance to get involved in lifting someone by the collar, and in 75% cases he will do the lifting. He received swords, helmets, and blows as often as he returned them, and therefore the laws of conservation were always observed. He bows twice as often than he pats someone on the shoulder, demonstrating more tendency for respect than for familiarity. He is approximately 10 times more likely to frown than to smile and/or half-smile. In fact, he shows a full smile only trice, every time after receiving something (rank, kick in the jaw, invitation for a dinner).

We can conclude that for a conversation partner you could do better than Shang. But with guy like Shang, who'd think of talking?
