Why Kate Quit
By that belle

Author's Note: This was originally a drabble I did for patty22 on livejournal. I decided to post it here with my other works. And here is the criteria:

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing/s: Gibbs/Kate
A quote that HAS to be used: "Who would have thought that."

In Anthony DiNozzo's many years at NCIS – and Timothy McGee's not so many years – they had often encountered the red-haired woman who picked Gibbs up after they solved a case. She would turn up in her sleek and shiny sports car, and Gibbs would get in. They would smile at each other, and then drive off without so much as a glance back.

They had never asked Gibbs about her, so naturally, he never said anything.

They hadn't seen the woman in over a year, so they naturally forgot about her.

On Monday morning Tony arrived at the building before anyone. He could tell because Gibbs' car was not there. And if he was not there, then it was very unlikely that anyone else was. When Tony was about to open his car door, McGee's car pulled into the space next to his. He let out a few choice words before getting out of the car, and slamming his door shut.

"Hey, Probie!" He yelled. "Watch where you're parking that thing! You nearly got my door!"

McGee muttered something under his breath. Tony didn't catch much of it, nor did he particularly care. He locked his car, then remembering he left his badge, gun and jacket in the car. Swearing again, he unlocked it and grabbed his stuff. As he locked it, again, he turned to see McGee staring dumbly at the dark blue sports car that had pulled up.

"What are you staring at, Probie?" Tony said, recognising his boss' silver head from where he stood. "It's just Gibbs and that red head."

"Uh… no, it's not Tony." McGee answered.

"Uh, yes it is McGee. I could recognise Gibbs from a mile away."

McGee snorted, and pointed. "You obviously couldn't tell who he's with."

Tony rolled his eyes, and looked closer at the woman who was giving Gibbs a somewhat sloppy goodbye kiss. The woman was younger than he remembered, and had dark brown hair. Or was it black? He couldn't tell from there.

Tony's mouth fell open when he saw the woman's face.

"Wow." Said McGee. "Who would have thought?"

"You mean, who would have thought that Gibbs and Kate would… would…?" Tony stammered. He had never heard the reason why Kate had quit her job at NCIS a year ago, but now everything made sense.

A shrill cry filled the air. The two men squinted to see where the sound was coming from. Tony pinched himself. Was Gibbs really lifting a baby out of the back seat of the convertible?

Tony cleared his throat. "They even reproduced."

"Imagine that."
