Matt's first few attempts to run away from the House were deemed harmless and completely normal for a boy suffering so much, I just hope he didn't tell anyone his name by Roger and by everyone else who was notified.
Mello was always waiting outside of Roger's office during the moment while Matt took his walk of shame-- the horrible journey from the desk to the door and he knew that Roger was staring at him, worried worried always worried because obviously Matt was just unstable and unhappy--
(but in all honesty, he just wanted to find out if Mello missed him or not. This was something he wouldn't even admit to himself, in the privacy of his own warped mind.)
and maybe, perhaps he wanted to die or something.
(As stated before, that wasn't the case.)
But the time Matt actually managed to get pretty far away from the House and was gone for about... three days, every caretaker and professor at the House went into absolute hysteria. Classes were put on hold, even L was notified, via Watari. "L expresses his concern for Matt's well-being, but what can he do?"
(L couldn't really express his concern, though, so he pushed the fear of Matt being hurt to the very back of his mind. However, he couldn't help zoning out occasionally and Light would ask, "What's wrong with you?" and L would say, "Nothing.")
It was all a blur for Matt, really. All he knew was that he was cold, hungry, and stupid-as-Hell for running away again. He shivered and moaned until he opened his eyes again and he was in the House again, warm and safe.
Mello said, "You could have died, you know. You could have freakin' died or something and we would have never been able to see each other again. That's not how it's going to work. I call the shots now, okay? You die when I feel you're damn well ready to die."
Matt nodded and pulled his blanket over his head.
(He never felt the need to run away again.)
