Spitting Your Miso

By: Killua K.

Kaoru caught him.

And this time she realized, there was no reason to convince her pathetically gullible mind that Kenshin somehow cared.

How 'bout a round of applause
Yeah...
Standing ovation

She slid the shoji open and dragged her trembling body into the dark room.

How could he..? She sadly muttered to herself, preventing her precious tears from welling in her eyes.

After all those blissful years they shared, those cold winter nights they spent in each other's warmth, those bright summer skies they lovingly adored, and those ordinary days they lived in seemingly perpetual truths, she suddenly realized that the only man of her life desired someone else's touch.

Also, it was so much sooner than she had expected.

You look so dumb right now
Standing outside my house

"Kaoru-dono!"

Kenshin screamed at the top of his lungs.

"Kaaaaoooorruuuu-doooonnoooo!!"

He lost track of the number of times he had called her name.

Kenshin pounded his knuckles on the wooden dojo gate. Not knowing why Kaoru suddenly threw him out of the house, he stood there like a crazy man while several passers-by glared at him, wondering if he had completely lost his sanity. He had no idea why this had happened to him, and why it had to happen on that very day when they ought to celebrate their fifth anniversary.

Trying to apologize
You're so ugly when you cry
Please, just cut it out

"Kaaaaooorrruuuu!!"

She could hear the unbearable agony in his voice as it pierced through the thick cold brick walls of the house.

"I'm sorry!!"

Her knees gave in and finally collapsed on the floor. She quickly covered her ears by her shivering hands and curled her body into a ball. "Kenshin…s-st...stop..." stuttering softly, she felt the reverberating beating of her heart that relentlessly moved inside her tightening chest.

"Kaaaaaaaaaaaaoooorrrrrrruuuuu-dddddoooonnnoooo!!"

She remembered the way his warm lips received the warmth that emanated from deep within her soul. She recalled the way his violet haze eyes sparkled in utterly indescribable delight and his cheeks flustered in a crimson color which she had mistakenly associated with a burning passion to love. Everything seemed so real, yet altogether wrong.

She should have known all this time.

Don't tell me you're sorry cause you're not
And baby when I know you're only sorry you got caught
But you put on quite a show
You really had me going

Kenshin surprisingly managed to break through the gate, and in a fleeting instant, he rushed towards the dojo with a resolute determination to apologize to his loved one for whatever reason or fault he had unconsciously committed.

His lightning-fast feet carried his light body through the corridors and passages which would lead him to Kaoru's bedroom. "Kaoru..." he mumbled as he pictured the beautiful woman in his head.

They were just eating dinner earlier.

They were just celebrating their fifth successful year as a strong couple who had its fair share of ups and downs.

And he was just sipping the miso soup she had painstakingly cooked for him...

But now it's time to go
Curtain's finally closing
That was quite a show
Very entertaining

"This is delicious, Kaoru-dono..." he spoke happily. It was an ultimately sweet confession that echoed inside her ears and made her flush in delight.

He was just sipping the miso soup she had painstakingly prepared for him on their fifth year anniversary.

And what followed next completely belied the trust and faith that existed in their bonds – the very foundation on which their relationship was built.

Kaoru left Kenshin for a while as she was about to get the apple pie she had just finished baking in the kitchen. He'd surely fall in love with this more...She mused excitedly. However, thinking that it would be better if she took some of the empty platters and dirty dishes with her, she immediately went back to the dining room where a horrendous scene abruptly shocked and traumatized her...

She had just seen the most terrible thing that she could ever witness in her entire life.

But it's over now
Go on and take a bow

Kenshin was holding a bowl in his hands, disgustingly spitting out the miso soup she thought he had already finished eating moments ago. Then, as he coughed and tried to clear his throat, he quickly took a napkin from the table and wiped his mouth clean.

"What the hell was that..?" he complained in a low voice, making sure that his girlfriend would not hear his comment.

But of course, it was merely too late for that.

Grab your clothes and get gone
You better hurry up before the sprinklers come on
Talkin' about, girl, I love you, you're the one
This just looks like a re-run
Please, what else is on

Tears finally rolled down on Kaoru's warm cheeks. She cried softly as she sat in one dark corner of her room and recalled what happened earlier.

I practiced several months...

Her shaking fingers brushed away the stubborn tears falling from her hazy eyes.

I know I'm not good at cooking...

She sniffed almost incessantly as she felt her lungs running out of air.

But I just wanted to do something for him. I just wanted to show how much I love him...

Kaoru pitifully hugged herself as her whole body trembled in pain. She was glad that Kenshin wasn't there to see her in such miserable state.

And the award for, the best liar goes to you
For making me believe that you could be
Faithful to me
Let's hear your speech ohh

"Kaoru-dono..."

A familiar voice sounded inside her room. She slowly lifted her head and was surprised to see a silhouette standing at her door.

"I'm..." it was Kenshin. "I'm s-sorry..."

The shadow walked closer to her. She tried to flinch from him, but she knew she couldn't do it.

How about a round of applause
Standing ovation

Kenshin knelt down in front of the crying woman and stared at her intently. Reaching her face by his right hand, he carefully brought his body nearer and gingerly caressed her damp cheek against his rough skin.

"Hey...don't cry..." he cupped her crying countenance in both of his hands. "Was it because I didn't like your miso?"

Kaoru sniffed, then painfully nodded her head.

But you put on quite a show
Really had me going
But now it's time to go
Curtain's finally closing

"You s-said..." Kaoru struggled to say the words right. "...it- it...w-was de-delicious..."

A river of tears flooded her eyes and flowed down on her face. Kenshin realized the intensity of his girlfriend's emotions, and regretted the foolish thing he had done which caused an insurmountable amount of pain to the woman he loved.

"...B-but...I-I s-saw you...Y-you spit everythin' out..." she burst into tears once more. She covered her face by her hands, trying to hide her distraught and vulnerable state from him.

Surprisingly, Kenshin pulled her to his chest and hastily wrapped his muscular arms around her petite body, offering her a refuge from hurt. He locked his fingers behind her back and tightly secured her within his warm embrace.

"...I was saying the truth, Kaoru," he spoke. "It's true that I loved your soup, and even the tempura, sushi and udon noodles that you've prepared for me...Everything, Kaoru-dono..."

She gasped.

"And it's because you cooked them out of your love for me. Now, nothing could go wrong with that..." he happily uttered as he gently ran his tender hands on her back.

"B-but...w-why did you s-spit the miso..?" she asked, wanting to confirm what she saw.

Kenshin chuckled softly then lightly kissed her forehead, sending chills to Kaoru's spine.

"There was a bug in the soup..."

That was quite a show
Very entertaining
But it's over now
Go on and take a bow...

She couldn't speak after he said that statement.

She couldn't explain the cocktail of emotions that surged within her when she realized the truth.

Ohhhhh... She embarrassingly thought. Then, Kaoru put her arms around Kenshin and tightly embraced him more than ever. He was surprised at what she did, but nevertheless received her action humbly.

After a few moments, she lifted her tear-stricken face and managed to smile at him sweetly. She stared into his huge violet eyes and finally felt complete.

"I love you, Kenshin..." she muttered. Bringing her face closer to his, Kaoru felt his warm breath that rushed from his lips, and then eventually sealed him off with a light joyful kiss.

She couldn't believe that a bug almost ruined their relationship.

And now she must definitely trust him no matter what. It was her Kenshin after all, and she's confident that he would never ever lie and hurt her.

At least that's what she thought so...

But it's over now

Kenshin smiled inwardly when he felt her tender lips on his. It was certainly the most delicious meal that he had on that night.

Although he greatly appreciated his girlfriend's effort in preparing a romantic dinner for both of them, he was absolutely glad that his quick reasoning saved him from danger, and he managed to make up a white lie that covered up his careless mistake.

I'm sorry, Kaoru-dono...but I wish there really was a bug in my miso...

Next anniversary, Kenshin decided that he would take Kaoru to dinner and perhaps finally surprise her with an engagement ring...

And then he'd be able to avoid the nasty miso soup.
