Dark

"Kagome?" InuYasha asked.

Kagome raised a sleepy head towards her husband, and found him sitting up in bed. It was very late, and the only light in the room was from the full moon spilling in through the window. It touched his hair, glinting on the silver amid the shadows, catching on the twitching of his ears, highlighting his cheeks. His eyes, catching the light, glowed.

She pushed herself up, the blanket falling to her waist, revealing her bare skin. Before she could say anything, his arms wrapped around her as he pulled her into his lap. Although his touch was gentle and loving, she could feel a soft desperation in how he wrapped his body around her. His cheek nuzzled her neck and shoulder, his arms held her firmly against his chest.

She leaned her head to one side, giving him better access to her neck. He planted butterfly kisses from her ear to the top of her shoulder, nuzzling her long black hair out of the way.

"InuYasha, is something wrong?" she asked.

"Hn," he said, letting his hands trail across the softness of her tummy, and trail up to cup her breasts. "Bad dream."

She shivered slightly under the assault of his hands, his mouth. She smiled at the sensation. "Feels nice," she said as she leaned into the warmth of his chest, skin against skin.

"Promise me," he said, holding her closer. His voice was insistent, sensuous.

"Promise what?"

"That you'll always be here when I wake up."

The neediness in his voice shook her, and she turned in his arms until she faced him. In the pale moonlight, he seemed so otherworldly, a creature of silver and shadow, beautiful, intense, eldritch, and to her eyes, used to his every nuance, frightened. Lifting up a hand, she cupped his cheek. "I'm not going anywhere, InuYasha."

He closed his eyes, and leaned into her touch. "It felt so real."

"You want to tell me about it?" she asked.

InuYasha covered her hand with his and used his other to draw her close. "I was somewhere dark. I think I was in the meidou where you were when the Jewel took you away. There was no one there, no light, nothing. I heard a voice tell me you had lost to the fucking Jewel and there wasn't a damn thing I could do to get you out. I hung there in the dark, for what felt like forever, no noise, no smells, no hope, nothing. It was like I was falling down into a bottomless pit. No friends, no home, no Kagome."

He swallowed. "I wanted to die." He crushed her to him. "I thought I had lost you forever."

Kagome wrapped her arms around him. "But you didn't."

"No, I didn't. I guess I must have rolled over or something in my sleep, because I suddenly felt your scent surround me. I knew somehow, some way, I would find you again. The next thing I knew, I woke up and my nose was buried in your hair. You saved me from the darkness again."

He cupped his hands around her face, staring deeply into her eyes, then kissed her fiercely. Breaking the kiss, he breathed, "Woman, without you, I am so lost in the dark."

She smiled up at him then returned his kiss, softly and gently. "Then you'll never be lost again. I'm not leaving. Wherever you are, I am home. And that's where I intend to stay."

With a soft kiss to her forehead, he laid them back down, and curling up around her, he knew that as long as she was with him, home was more than just a place to stay. It beat with the loving heart next to his. Content with that knowledge, he slipped easily into a peaceful, dreamless sleep.
