A/N: Hey, I've been inspired to write a oneshot by one of my favorite authors on this website. Libowiekitty, here's to you.

Avatar Aang's Statue
In the South Pole there wasn't much you could distinguish yourself with, unless you could build a snowman in less than ten seconds, or hit an arctic shark with your boomerang when it jumps out of the water. Otherwise you were just another kid in blue. But me, I had something on all of them, I was the avatar, how was that for distinguishing?
Once, I overhead one of the kids complaining to his mother, "Koichi? His name means little fish, how can he be the avatar?"
And he had been right, all my life I had been the little fish. I was the smallest boy in the tribe, the one with the least social skills, and not much to look at even though my mother had assured me I'd grow into my ears. Notice: smallest, least, not much . . .
By the time I was sixteen and they told me I was the avatar some of that had changed, although not enough for me to shed the nickname "Elephant Koi".
If those kids knew what it was like to be the avatar they wouldn't be so jealous. To know that it was your responsibility anytime the world was in danger? Most of them didn't even like to watch for pole mice trying to get into the storage hut.
Now that I was in the Southern Air Temple sanctuary, looking at all the avatars before me…I was back to feeling like a little fish.
Avatar Aang's statue cast an especially long shadow. This guy had saved the world and restored balance to the Fire Nation by the time he was twelve years old.
I had caught my first fish by then.
From what I'd heard about him Aang had also been especially good-hearted and everyone had always wanted him around. As I looked up into his face he didn't even need any hair to be handsome and with that smile he seemed charming too, as if the statue would come to life and wink at me any second.
I did a double take as I realized something, Aang was smiling? All the other avatars were standing with expressionless faces, saving the world was serious business. Then I remembered his wife, Kara? No, was it Takara? Katara, that was it, had insisted he be carved this way.
Suddenly, I didn't feel like just your average avatar. Looking at the other statues I realized that like the statue of avatar Aang's smile they all must have had their defining traits.
Some people found theirs by the time they were twelve. Aang had met the ails of the world with friendliness and an air scooter. What would I meet the world with?
As I looked up at Avatar Aang's statue again I found myself grinning back at him. He even had big ears.
