Eagle leaned over the railing, gazing into the dark wilderness. They did not have any evening exercises as far as he knew, and he was taking this rare moment of free time to repose and just enjoy the night air.

Snake was beside him, smoking a cigarette. It was ironic – Snake was an overprotective medic, yet he smoked like a chimney. He kept trying to quit, but the recent death of his older brother had hit him hard.

His brother had been in Iraq, and was killed by a bullet to the chest a week after Snake had been sent to Brecon Beacons for training. He only told Eagle what had happened. Cub didn't deserve to know, and Snake wasn't as close with Fox and Wolf as he was with Eagle.

"Cub did pretty good with the RTI." Eagle commented casually.

Snake nodded, blowing out a cloud of smoke as he pulled the cigarette from his lips, "Yeah. I was surprised. Never thought the kid would go through with it, and by god he did, and saved all our asses."

Eagle chuckled, "Yeah. He's either brave or stupid."

"It's probably a bit of both." Snake grins, and the two exchange short laughs at Cub's expense. It wouldn't be the first time.

"No, seriously mate, he did damn good. First time I saw little Double 'O Nothing, I thought he'd last a few hours, maybe even a day or so, if that. But he's done it, and hasn't bitched like I could see any other teenager doing." Snake said.

Eagle nodded, "Yeah. Kid's pretty tough. I wonder what he's here for."

Snake snorted, "I doubt we'll ever know. All I do know is, what the hell does a kid do for Special Ops? I mean, are they gonna send him off to dangerous places to get killed or is he just a glorified fly-on-the-wall?"

"I don't know. He's probably here just so they can say they did something to help the kid if he gets caught. My guess is he's just gonna be sent out to get information, or used for covers to make others looks less suspicious. Nobody's gonna think a guy and his son are spies."

"Yeah." Snake nodded, but a sense of uneasiness filled the silence that followed.

Cub wouldn't be in any danger, would he?

Sure, he was a pain in the ass and he sure as hell didn't belong there. But that didn't mean Eagle or Snake wanted to see the kid thrown out into the world of espionage where he could be killed or tortured.

"There's gotta be some laws against that. They can't send him out there like a real spy." Eagle said, trying to reassure himself and Snake.

"Can they?" he whispered, looking a little worried.

Snake was startled, but shared the same sentiments. "Eagle..."

There was a pause as Eagle looked at his teammate, his hazel eyes staring into Snake's olive green ones.

"Cub will be fine."

Eagle nodded, smiling weakly. "Yeah. Cub'll be fine."

"Hopefully." they whispered together.

I wrote this in less than 20 minutes. I proofread, but that's no guarantees, so sorry for any mistakes! I hope you all enjoyed, please review and give me all a nice birthday present! :) and don't forget to celebrate when we hit 1,000 fics! And oh yeah, the RTI incident is from the missing chapter of the Stormbreaker, which you can find on my homepage under the 'Alex Rider' page.
