Preface: Just Too Much

Everyone else seemed to evade him, have an instinct to run the second they saw him. My mother seemed to have that as she crept toward the door. I just stared at him in wonder. As he drifted toward me, my mother threw herself in front of me in a desperate attempt to save me.

I watched the creature devour my mother, her shrieks and screeches filling the room. I couldn't control the sobs that escaped my mouth, my lungs searching for air. Endless streams of tears flowed from my eyes, and a cold sweat coated my entire body. I crawled into a corner, hoping the predator wouldn't notice me, but the second I moved, his head snapped up to where I was on my hands and knees on the floor. His shaggy golden hair and matching eyes were menacing, his pale white skin seemed to glow in the dark room. He flashed me a smile, revealing the glistening teeth that had sucked the life out of my mother.

"On a normal day," the hunter said, his voice smooth, but deep. He was still crouching over my mother's unmoving body. "I would save you for desert, but I'm in a giving mood, and they won't be happy with me, even for just one." He laughed, but I didn't dare move let alone say anything. I stared at the creature, trying to figure out what he was. He definitely wasn't human, but he resembled one drawn to perfection. Everyone else seemed to evade him, have an instinct to run the second they saw him. My mother seemed to have that as she crept toward the door. I just stared at him in wonder. As he drifted toward me, my mother threw herself in front of me in a desperate attempt to save me.

"Though you do smell very tempting…" he cut off, inhaling deeply, but sighing. "I really shouldn't. Consider yourself lucky I have this much control." He smiled again, and my heart stopped beating. Something in the distance caught his attention, for his head snapped up towards the window. He gave me one last look, crouched, then sprung out the window, shattering the glass as he went.

I curled up in a ball, and rocked myself back and forth in a sorry attempt to calm myself down. My breathing came in short, quick pants, and I couldn't think straight. The sound of my mother screams ringing in my ears.

I knew what he was. A malicious character that some claim is fictional. A character who takes the life of innocent humans to sustain its own. A vampire.

And for some reason, I knew that I had to keep this knowledge a secret, as frightened as I was.

And as frightened as I was, I also knew that I hated them.

Okay, this is a series I'm thinking about starting. The summary explains it a little better, but review and tell me what you think.
