Author's Notes- This was written after re-watching "Craving". I'm not much of a Clark/Lana fan, I actually prefer Clark/Lex, but... This short, sweet little piece just came to me. Enjoy!
Pairing- Clark/Lana.

"Thank you, Clark." Lana said as Clark walked her home after giving her her birthday present.
"You're welcome." Clark said shyly. "I just wanted to make your birthday a happy one."
"You did." Lana told him. "Clark, you just gave me my first happy birthday in twelve years."
"I'm sorry, I couldn't make your party." Clark told her.
"So am I." Lana said softly.
They looked at each other for a minute, then Clark sighed.
"I guess I should go."
"Yeah." Lana said softly.
"Happy birthday, Lana." He said, giving her a quick hug.
Lana returned the hug and reached up to kiss his cheek.
Then, as they were about to pull away, their eyes met. Before either of them really knew what was happening their lips had met. It was a soft, gentle kiss, one that was over almost before it had begun.
"I'm sorry." Clark whispered when they parted.
"Don't be." Lana told him, her eyes shining. "It was nice."
"It was." Clark agreed softly, his eyes glued to Lana.
He didn't know what had just happened or where they went from here, but he did know that whatever had happened, he had liked it.
"Good night." He said after a minute, as he turned to go.
"Good night." Lana said softly as she reached for the door. "And Clark?"
He turned around. "Yeah?"
"Thank you."
Clark just smiled before heading home.
It had been a good night. And who knew maybe something would happen.
Or maybe not. Maybe it had just been a thank you kiss given under the spell of the moment.
He didn't know. But he did know that whatever happened, no matter how many plans he had to cancel because of who he was, that even if Lana stayed with Whitney, at least he'd had one moment.
It was enough.
And, hey, maybe it was just the beginning.
The End
