Late Night Bonding

Sue Yee looked at her clock and sighed

"3 am" she muttered "what am I doing awake?" she got up and headed towards the kitchen hoping to find something to help her fall asleep.

Mei Hua woke at the sound of someone walking past her room, and got out of bed to find out what was going on.

"Sue, what are you doing up?" she asked

"I can't sleep, Nana" Sue said

"Come with me, I know something that can help with that"

They arrived in the kitchen and Mei Hua went for something she knew always worked for her, loose leaf tea with chamomile.

Mei Hua sighed to herself, Sue had a special place in her heart for reasons even she couldn't truly pen down, other than the fact that Mei Hua had secretly always wanted a daughter. She didn't outwardly treat Sue different from Sid, Tobey or Barney or her son Calvin, but Sue would always be special to her.

Sue took a seat at the kitchen table and Mei Hua got the tea ready before taking a seat with Sue and giving her a cup.

"This always helps me relax" Mei Hua paused "Sue, it seems like I'm always scolding Tobey and Sid and not really paying that much attention to you."

Sue knew her Nana was right about that, but decided not to say much, Sid and Tobey did get into to trouble a lot the latter more than the former.

"What I wanted to know was, well, what is important to you… other than saving Chinatown?" Mei Hua asked her expression soft.

"Family," Sue replied "I want to stay close to those I have, Sid is the only blood relative I have, and you… you've been like another mom for me and I know for a fact Sid would say the same thing." She paused looking into her half empty cup of tea "I sometimes wonder if my parents would be proud of the girl I've become."

"I know they would Sue, because I am so proud of you" Mei Hua smiled

"Really?"

"Yes, Sue, really" Mei Hua said but curiosity was proving something she couldn't suppress "just a question, why have you been so short tempered with the boys for the last couple of days?"

"I think it's PMS" Sue replied not embarrassed to admit that to her Nana

"Ah" a knowing look spread across Mei Hua's face "I should have known."

Sue finished her tea and realized why Mei Hua had recommended this, it was soothing but that wasn't all that soothed the teen girl. The time and conversation with Mei Hua, just the two of them let her get things out that she wouldn't say in front of the guys and she would use to her advantage. Several more secrets came out between them before Sue really began to get sleepy again

"Nana, I wish we could spend more time together like this."

Mei Hua was slightly taken aback, she hadn't expected this from Sue, but she should have.

"How about after you finish your evening deliveries, we could have tea in the garden together, how does that sound?"

"As long as it is no boys allowed it sounds great Nana" Sue paused "I'm going to go to bed"

"Goodnight Sue,"

"Good night Nana, I love you" Sue hugged Mei Hua and then headed up the stairs.

"I love you too" Mei Hua replied. "My daughter" she added so only she heard before cleaning up and heading for bed.
