Birthday Surprise

Disclaimer: I don't own Crescent Moon.

Summary: Mahiru has a special present for Mitsuru's birthday.

A/N: I originally posted this as the first chapter of what was supposed to be a multi-chaptered story of Mahiru and Mitsuru raising their child called Growing Up. But I've recently decided to officially stop writing and posting fanfiction. So I've changed the title and summary so it could be a one shot instead. I apologize to anyone who was waiting for more chapters.

Mitsuru knew his wife was up to something.

All night Mahiru had been giving him these odd smiles that he couldn't decipher the meaning of, and it was making him paranoid. When it was time for dessert, the tengu half-feared that the waiting staff would waltz out carrying a cake and be obnoxiously singing 'Happy Birthday to you!', but that thankfully didn't happen.

Now they were at home and Mahiru had told him to wait on the couch while she went to get his presents. He had calmed down considerably on the drive back, but a little anxiousness remained. He knew something was going on, but couldn't put his finger on it.

Mahiru walked back in, carrying two beautifully wrapped boxes with her and handed him the largest as she sat down. "Okay, Mitsuru. Open that one first!"

He quickly ripped off the wrapping and opened it to find the brown leather jacket he had been eyeing at the mall a few months ago. "I can't believe you remembered!" he exclaimed as he took it out to try it on.

"It looks great! It really brings out your eyes," she said with a smile, straightening the collar.

Mitsuru folded the jacket carefully back in the box and picked up the other, smaller gift next to it. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Mahiru tense up as he began opening it and he silently wondered what was wrong as he lifted off the top. His brow furrowed when he saw what was inside.

A pair of white, knitted baby booties sat on top of crinkled pink and blue tissue paper. When he looked up to ask about them, he was greeted with the most brilliant smile he'd ever seen on her. Everything suddenly clicked into place.

"You're…?" he breathed.

Mahiru's excited nod was all the answer he needed. Before she could say anything, Mitsuru pulled her close and kissed her.

A few minutes passed before they finally broke apart for some much-needed air. Mahiru cupped her husband's cheek, smiling at the look of awe in his eyes as he placed a hand over her stomach.

"Happy Birthday, Mitsuru."

A/N: Since it's never stated in the books, I'm making Mitsuru's birthday May 17th since that's my friend's birthday too. And he's 28, in case you're wondering, which would make Mahiru 27.
