I ship it. And I have no idea if there is a forty-step waltz. An alternate ending to the anime I guess; if Eclair hadn't rode off into the distance and instead stayed at Ouran.

Disclaimer: I do not own Ouran.

...

Out of the corner of his eye, Kyouya Ootori sees a lone maiden.

Perhaps its chivalry that causes him to walk up to her – the fact that no woman should have a broken heart. Perhaps. If you believe in fairy tales and fantasies, then you may believe it.

But this is Kyouya Ootori. He is no Prince Charming; no knight in shining armor. That is Suou's job, not his. For any that know him – the true him – it is obvious that he has one thing on his mind, and one thing only. The lady is from an influential family. That's all that matters.

He walks up to her and extends his hand.

She casts him an icy glare that could freeze an ocean. In the state she was in, she wished nothing more than to sulk in the back of the party in her loss. Of course, no Ootori boy shall pass up an opportunity to further their connections. And sadly, no Tonnerre girl shall pass up an invitation to waltz.

He does not retract his hand.

Sighing, she lends her dainty fingers to his and stands, walking to the dance floor without so much as sparing a glance for her partner.

"The forty step waltz," she says.

"No more, no less," he replies.

They waltz. A forty-step waltz. No more, no less.

"Lady Eclair, when do you plan to head back to France?" he asks.

"Tonight."

"Ah, that's a shame. I was looking forward to showing you more of Japan."

"If the Ootori's are interested in expanding their empire," she responds, her voice dripping with malice, "then please tell your father to send someone other than the third son."

"I should have known. Somebody who goes for a Suou will not settle for less than the best."

Her toe touches the ground, the final step of their waltz.

"A forty-step waltz."

"No more, no less. Sad you had to choose such a short dance, Lady Eclair. I would not mind talking to you for longer."

He clasps her hand in his one final time and kisses her goodbye.

Her fingers raise to her face.

"Ootori," she mumbles. "Maybe I shall stay a little longer..."
