Sixteen year old Elizabeth Swann tried to control her rising annoyance and smiled politely at the young captain James Norrington. He had come over for Sunday dinner, as he had done every week that he was docked at Port Royal for the last year or so. They had been conversing politely together, Governor Swann having stepped out for a moment. Unfortunately for the good captain, it was Elizabeth's 'time of the month' and she was feeling more irritable than usual. When Norrington addressed her, wondering why she had fallen silent, her patience broke.

"Stop it, James! I can't stand it anymore!"

"Stop wh-"

"I hate it when you call me Betty!"

Norrington looked like someone had hit him in the face with a deck plank, sitting there with a decidedly stupid look on his face. "But...I've always called you Betty. I thought it was my special name for you that you liked."

"You're right about the first part, but on the second you're mistaken!"

He floundered guiltily. "I do apologize, Liz-"

"Elizabeth! Not Liz, Lizzy, Liza, Eliza, Betsy, Beth, Betty, Elly, or anything else you could possibly dream up. Elizabeth, alright? I like my name, all the syllables," she snapped at him.

He nodded slowly and deeply. "Alright, Elizabeth. Thank you for setting me straight."

Even this was irritating to the girl's hormonally fried emotions and Elizabeth flounced off in a huff just as her father walked back in. Governor Swann looked at his retreating offspring's back, then at the still nonplussed Norrington. "What was that about?" he asked the captain.

Norrington just shook his head, staring at the doorway she had disappeared into. "Unpredictable, firey, beautiful, determined. She is becoming a fine woman, Governor Swann."
