Breathe. Take a deep breath. Just breathe.
Sam kept replaying the words in her head. She knew the boys were sleeping and it would not go well if the boys woke up to the sight and sound of Sam choking Elizabeth.
"The boys are asleep," Jason answered, his voice remained calm.
Sam moved to close the door. She didn't want to disturb her neighbors, as she knew Elizabeth was prone to great theatrics if she had an audience.
"If you tell me where they are, I wake them so we can go." Elizabeth said. She looked only at Jason.
"It may not be such a good idea to wake them. They've had a pretty eventful day and have finally fallen asleep." Sam suggested. She kept her voice even, despite the feelings raging within her.
"I was speaking to Jason. You're advice on how to care for my children is not needed." Elizabeth responded, "Jason, their father, is the only other person in this room who has a say about my kids."
Take a deep breath, Sam.
"There is no need to speak to Sam that way, Elizabeth." Jason said. His voice was still calm.
"I just want to get my boys and go home." Elizabeth replied.
"There is no need to wake them. I'm here, Sam's here. The boys are safe."
"You want me to leave my boys here, with Sam? I don't think so, Jason. Sam knows nothing about being a mother or keeping a child safe!" Elizabeth shrieked. The disgust in her voice was evident.
You cannot kill her, Sam. You cannot kill her!
"What could possibly happen to them while they are here?" Jason questioned. Elizabeth's comment about Sam's mothering skills grating on his nerves.
"I do not trust her, Jason. She watched Jake get kidnapped. She had thugs pull guns on me and the boys. She is dangerous!"
"All of that happened years ago, Elizabeth. Sam is a mother too; she would never do something like that again. She cares about Cam and Jake; she would never let anything happen to them. She has raised Danny on her own for the last few years and he's happy and healthy."
"You may believe that Jason, but I don't. The woman is a con artist. She is a professional liar. I don't want that around my boys. If she was so willing to do what she did before, how do I know she won't do them again?"
"The person I was then, Elizabeth was irrational and hurt. I'm not proud of what I did and if I could change that I would. It took me some time, but I realized that those boys were not to blame for what happened. I should have never allowed things to escalate to that degree, and it won't happen again, because I will never be that person again." Sam revealed, "But there is something that you need to understand Elizabeth. I am sorry that I involved those boys in my need for revenge, but I am done apologizing for something that happened years ago. I am done allowing you or anyone else to use my past as a weapon against me. Yes, I've made mistakes, but let's not pretend that I am the only guilty party."
"My children could have been hurt…"Elizabeth started.
"You're right they could have been hurt, but that blame is not solely mine Elizabeth. You took it upon yourself to play God with Lucky's, Jason's, and my life. You lied when it suited you, and you told the truth when it suited you. You manipulated everyone around you for your benefit. You weren't worried about your kids when you were trying to keep Jason and Lucky on tight leashes. I have apologized for my actions, but you've never even shown remorse."
"That's not true, I…"
"It's more than true Elizabeth. Sure, you cry and you swear you never meant for things to happen the way they did, but that only happened when Jason or Lucky started pulling on your tight leash. You don't regret a single thing you did, because it got you what you really wanted. It got me gone from Port Charles and you the apple of everyone's eye. "
"You don't know what you're talking about Sam. I did what I thought I had to do, to protect my children, because that is what a mother does." Sam knew Elisabeth's comment was meant to be cruel.
"I know all about making sacrifices as mother. When Danny was born, I made the decision not to tell Jason about him, because I knew that the relationship I had with Jason was at a toxic point, and I could not let that affect my son. I did not dangle Danny in front of Jason so that he would come running when I called. I put my son first. I put his health and happiness above my own every day, because he is what matters. I didn't play Jason and Jack against each other, and I certainly never tried to keep the two on leashes."
"I'm not listening to this. I am taking my boys and we are going home!" Elizabeth turned to head toward the bedrooms.
"The boys are sleeping, and you are not going to wake them up. They've had an eventful day, Elizabeth. Leave them alone." At Jason's words Elizabeth turned back around and met his cold eyes.
"Jason, I am not leaving my boys here with her!"
"Sam is no threat to Cam or Jake."
"Yes, she is!"
"Why don't you admit what this is really about, Elizabeth? Sure, you don't want the boys around me, because you hate me and that fine. You don't want the boys here, bonding with me or Danny because you're scared." Sam said.
"What could I possibly be scared of?"
"You're scared that Danny, Cam, and Jake will like each other and want to spend more time with each other, that they will like hanging out over here with me and Danny. You can have men in out of their life, but God forbid there be another woman besides your or your grandmother in their life."
Sam knew from Elizabeth's silence that she had hit the nail on the head. Elizabeth had never had problem with men going in and out of the boys' life, but when another woman came into the picture, her claws came out.
"I'm not dealing with this!" Elizabeth finally spoke up. She adjusted her purse strap. "You want the boys to stay here for the night? They can, but I don't want Sam poisoning them against me. The can stay but only for tonight. I'm going home, Jason you stay here and protect them from her."
Elizabeth moved toward the front door. She glared at Sam, before opening the door and walking through.
One day, I'm not going to be the bigger person.
"If you're going to yell at me about what I said to Elizabeth, don't bother. I regret nothing." Sam said and moved to head to the kitchen for something to drink. Jason followed.
"You weren't wrong."
Sam chanced a look at Jason and saw the sincerity in his face. In the past whenever Sam had confronted Elizabeth with the truth, Jason had tried to be understanding of Elizabeth and make excuses. The Jason standing before her now wasn't making an excuse.
"Elizabeth did manipulate me and Lucky. That much I have been clear on for a long time. I did not realize until tonight that she had been manipulating you too. Elizabeth proved tonight that she is damn good at trying to make herself the victim in every situation. She's used your past to hurt you and make you do things that were out of your character, and I'm sorry that I never saw it before. I'm sorry I stood back and let her have her turn at trying to destroy you. I'm sorry that I couldn't see that the strongest person I knew needed me to be strong for her."
Sam gripped the cup in her hand so tightly, she was sure her knuckled were white. She never knew that she needed to hear Jason say those things before tonight.
The next morning, Sam wandered from her bedroom into her bathroom to brush her teeth. She and Jason had talked for a long time last night, before he finally made her go to bed. He'd slept on the couch again.
Before she'd gone to sleep though, they had talked about all the things that happened to tear them apart. Jason apologized for trying to control Sam's life and for not trusting her the way she had once trusted him. Sam apologized for allowing her pain to feed a need for revenge that had put his son in danger and for keeping Danny away for so long. Jason explained to Sam that he understood why she made the decisions she'd made regarding Danny and that he was here now.
They'd spent the rest of the night with Sam telling Jason all about Danny and showing all the pictures she'd taken over the years.
After a hot shower, Sam dressed and headed out of her bedroom. She strolled past Jason, who was still asleep on the couch. She opened Danny's door just a little and smiled at what she was hearing.
"Danny, I'm glad we get to be brothers." Jake said as he and Danny worked on their Lego creations.
Cam was busy setting up all the soldiers. "I wish you could be my brother too." Cam's voice was a little sad, and in that moment, Sam wanted to rush in and comfort him.
"You can be my brother too!" Danny said.
"How?"
"My mommy says that the people we love the most is family. So we all promise to love each other then we can be family. We can be brothers."
"Really?" Jake smiled.
"Yup!" Danny beamed.
Sam clutched her chest at the sweet moment. Her little boy was so smart, and she loved that the hatred Elizabeth harbored hadn't been passed down to such sweet little boys.
"We will be brothers forever," Jake smiled.
"Yeah!" Cam agreed.
"They're great kids," Jason said as Sam walked back into the living room.
"Do you ever wonder how such goodness can come from all the pain and hell that's been our lives for the last few years?"
"They are the best of who they come from. I know I don't remember Jason Quartermaine, but I hope that Jake and Danny end up more like him than like me."
"Why would you say that?"
"Jason Quartermaine was loved. He was an upstanding citizen who had feelings. He was someone people could be proud of."
"Jason, you are the only person I know who can see the good in some of the worst people and only see the worst in yourself. No, you're not Jason Quartermaine, I never met him. I did however have the pleasure of meeting Jason Morgan. He taught me about love and gave me something I had never had before. He gave me home. He gave me a beautiful boy who is his carbon copy."
"Sam, I..."
"He is so proud to have you as his dad. Danny never met Jason Quartermaine, and I think he's turning out great. I remember when I told him you had a motorcycle. His eyes got so big and begged me to go to the toy store so he could find one too. I ended up buying five motorcycle toys that day. They are still his favorite; he keeps them on a shelf all their own in his room. You're his hero. Whenever he's scared or confused about something I talk to him about you, Jason Morgan, and Danny beams with pride. He's proud of you Jason Morgan, never regret that."
"Danny has no clue about some of the things I've done. I'm positive he has no clue about the things I did to his mother. When he finds out…"
"When he finds out that his mother and his father both did things they are not proud of, he will realize they are human. He will remember that good people make mistakes, and that he should not judge those mistakes. Jason, I have always told Danny that no one, us included, is perfect. He understands that we have made mistakes but that we will love him no matter what."
Jason stared at Sam soaking in all that she's said. This was a big part of why he's missed her. Sam always gave it to him honestly. She never pretended he was perfect but she never let him accept the worse about himself. She always had a way of making him see things in ways he was sometimes scared to see them. Sam forced him to see that there was some good in him.
"Mommy, we're awake!" Danny came bounding into the room. Cam and Jake followed closely behind.
Sam turned and looked at the three boys. They were each wearing large smiles and looking at Sam with shining eyes.
"How about we get some breakfast?" Sam suggested.
"Yeah!" Cameron responded, "Can we go to Kelly's?"
"Sure," Jason answered moving to grab the boys' coats, "if that's okay with Sam."
Sam smiled, "let's go."
Maxie closed her purse as she continued walking through the park. She'd been running errands all day and was headed to Kelly's for coffee and a chance to get off her feet for five minutes.
Maxie looked down at her poor abused feet. She was so due for a foot massage and an intense pedicure. She had earned in these heels.
Maxie was pondering her poor feet, when a force pushed her to the ground. Her now throbbing butt broke her fall.
She looked up to find the source of her unfortunate situation and her eyes met Jack's. He was wearing a smug smile and offered no apology.
Maxie rose back to her feet and leveled Jack with a glare.
"Generally when someone makes another person fall, they apologize."
"Yeah, but I wouldn't mean it, so why lie?"
"You've been lying for quite some time. What makes this situation any different?"
"Whatever, Max."
"Enjoy walking away, while you still can."
"And what does that mean?"
"It means that your hurt one of my best friends and her son. That same best friend happens to be the love of Jason Morgan's life. Not to mention Danny is Jason's son. I may be all for destroying your life, but Jason is going to end it. Anyone who has ever hurt Sam"
"Jason Morgan can't touch me." Jack boasted.
"And why not?"
"That's what I would like to know," Sonny said as he walked up to the conversation.
"I have something your lapdog wants."
