He goes to visit Abby as soon as he's back at the Navy Yard. His brain is restless and overworked: full of thoughts that mill and churn and give him a headache.
Callen. Macy. Ziva and Rivkin. He can't let it go; can't give himself a break.
"Gibbs!"
And then, for just a little while… it all stops. Abby tosses aside her report and launches herself at him, her body colliding with his in a warm, tight, no-holds-barred hug. She's squeezing the breath out of him, chattering nineteen-to-the-dozen about how much she's missed him; but while she's a whirlwind of noise, he feels an inner quiet descend upon him.
She releases him with a wide grin, a curious glint in her eye. He returns the smile without hesitation, his problems chased to the dark recesses and crannies of his mind; the same way that shadows retreat to the corners when a match is struck.
Ridiculous how a woman in pigtails and a black, skull-and-crossbones dress can illuminate his day so drastically. Ridiculous… but undeniable. She's the eye of his storm; the oasis in his desert.
Some days, like today, he even thinks she realises how much she means to him.
