The Little Things

It was just one of those mornings, Eleanor mused, when everything seemed perfect, there were birds flying about outside singing songs about the spring, when she looked out the window she saw her husband, and his two brothers, who were supposed to be washing the car, throwing the sponges at each other in an all out water fight, and the water from the hose hitting the sunlight just right to create an array of colours.

Her two children, one boy and one girl, chasing their auntie Brittany around the front garden, with Alvin every now and again shooting the hose in her direction. She could see smiles everywhere, and it made her heart flutter.

She followed the spring morning as it drifted through the kitchen window and landed on her older sister's face.

Jeanette sat, still dressed in her summer pyjama's (shorts and vest) at the table, book in one hand, toast in the other. She was too absorbed in her book to notice the soft wave of laughter that flitted into the room, or that of the birds songs, to caught up in the storyline to realise the sun was gently kissing her cheeks, only taking the time to take small bites out of her toast every now and again.

Ellie watched as her sister placed her half eaten toast back onto its plate before pushing it away from her, a sign that let Eleanor know that the tallest chipette had finished. She studied Jeanette's face for a moment, noticing how her eyes weren't at all focused on the words on the page, but rather starring at nothing, she watched as her head tilted slightly, the light hitting her eyes, making them seem wider somehow. A smile crept onto the brunettes face as her left hand fell onto her swollen stomach, before looking down, almost as if she could see the small person growing inside of her.

Eleanor knew the look all too well, it was the look of a mother who had just felt her child move for the first time, almost as if it was saying 'yes, I'm here, I'm alive'.

How she missed that feeling.

"Eleanor, is everything okay?" she heard Jeanette ask softly, as she was brought back from her reverie. She grabbed a cookie from a small Peter Rabbit themed tin that sat idly by on one of the higher shelves, so little fingers on little hands couldn't reach, before she turned back around to face Jeanette's soft smile, and bright eyes.

She took a bite out of her cookie and thought for a moment, taking one more look outside the window at her family, before smiling brightly at Jeanette.

"Everything's fine," she said with a sigh, "everything's perfect."

FIN.
