Footsteps

She awoke to light footsteps. There was a time, not long ago, that she would have been alarmed to hear footsteps in her chamber in the middle of the night. Now, they were an odd comfort.

The Queen didn't move as the covers were pulled and a warm body slipped beneath them. There was no need to pretend to be asleep. If her king had wanted her to stay asleep he would have made sure. The thief had the ability to be as silent as a stray cat. He just hadn't felt like it when he snuck into her chamber.

Eugenides wrapped his warm arm around her shoulders.

She flinched at the touch. The Queen of Attolia still was not accustomed to such contact. However, she was learning to adjust and found these sudden new touches would put her mind at ease in the dark of night.

She did not bother to turn her head. "I thought you said you were going to stay in your chambers tonight."

The king buried his face into her neck. "I lied, my queen."

She shook her head as she closed her eyes. Before sleep retook her, the queen reached and enclosed her hand around her king's. The fingers closed and she could feel the warmth from the body of her king.
