Sleeping Smiles
She just sat beneath the pale moon with a gentle smile on her precious little face. She's always smiling, why? There isn't much to smile about. Even when her lips are aren't curved, she's smiling with her eyes.
"Lord Sesshoumaru, what are you staring at?" The wide eyed toad asked.
Sesshoumaru averted his eyes to the other direction and dismissed his question. Jaken sighed at his Lord's usual silence and walked towards Rin.
"Oh, Master Jaken! Where are we going tomorrow?" Rin asked, raising her hand up high.
"Wherever Lord Sesshoumaru goes of course." Jaken answered with a mighty tone.
"Hmm." Rin looked up to face the stars, swoosh! A shooting star bolted right past the starry sky. Rin gasped and quickly shut her eyes and clasped her hands together.
"Now Rin, what are you doing?"
"…" Rin hesitated to answer until she opened her eyes and sighed. "I made a wish! Didn't you see that shooting star?"
"Huh? Where?" Jaken looked up at the sky.
"Aw, you missed it. It was beautiful. I wonder if Lord Sesshoumaru saw it!" Rin happily skipped over to Sesshoumaru.
Sesshoumaru was resting against a tree with his eyes closed.
"Lord Sesshou-" Rin paused as soon as she noticed Sesshoumaru's gentle breaths. She crouched beside the sleeping dog demon and gazed upon his sleeping face. "Lord Sesshoumaru…is sleeping?" Rin whispered in amazement. She looked over at Jaken who continued his search for shooting stars, then looked back at her lord. Rin happily smiled.
"You're smiling again."
Rin's heart nearly skipped a beat as he startled her. "L-Lord Sesshoumaru." Rin sighed then giggled, placing her hand over her chest.
Sesshoumaru opened his eyes and pierced them into Rin's. "You're smiling." Sesshoumaru repeated.
Rin's smile slowly curved down in confusion.
"Even when you frown, you're still smiling."
"Does Lord Sesshoumaru not like it when I smile?" Rin asked, covering her mouth. Sesshoumaru moved her hand away from her mouth and shook his head.
"No, but why? What is your reason?" Sesshoumaru didn't understand humans Nor their hearts, and what he was even more clueless about, was how a child like Rin can keep smiling after everything she's been through.
"Well, Master Jaken never does it, and neither does Lord Sesshoumaru, so I smile enough for all of us." Rin answered.
"That's not a good enough reason." He said with his robotic tone.
"How come Lord Sesshoumaru never smiles?" Rin asked.
"There is no reason to."
"Not a good enough reason!" Rin giggled.
"How can you continue to smile through all these tragedies? Near deaths, blood, tears…not something a child should be smiling about."
"But…I'm always with you and every moment by Lord Sesshoumaru's side is something to smile about. Without you, I wouldn't even be able to smile at all." Rin clutched her toes and hugged her knees. "Because I wouldn't be alive."
Sesshoumaru stared at the child sitting beside him, and placed his palm on top of her head.
Rin felt the warmth of his large hand. She nearly melted beneath him, yet kept her composure and smiled.
"Did you make a wish?" Sesshoumaru asked, caressing the child's silky, dark hair.
"Mhm…" Rin gently nodded.
"Did it come true?"
She nodded once again.
"I saw a different side of Lord Sesshoumaru tonight." She smiled, remembering his sleeping face.
