There are times when Rodolphus wonders what she sees in the boy. (Her protegé.)

When Crouch annoys her, she slaps him.

When he fails her, her punishments are swift, harsh . . . and she demands he learn from them.

When he amuses her, she ruffles his hair, and laughs a not entirely cruel laugh.

When he surprises her, he strikes her still.

Should he exceed her expectations, she whoops and smiles, kisses him on the forehead - and smirks at his poorly concealed confusion.

And when the Dark Lord asks for him, in icy tones . . . she hands him over without hesitation.
