Nathan had only planned on showing JD how to make an effective housecall to help the young Sheriff's relations, but thieves had struck while they were they were at the farm. Nathan would have preferred to have any of his other, more experienced friends extract the bullet lodged in the back of his knee, but it was a good day's ride back to town. He handed JD the heated knife while instructing the boy. He fought to keep his voice steady but gritted his teeth when JD's shaking hand slid the knife into his flesh. Closing his eyes, he prayed.
