She was always crying now, hidden in the woods behind trees and bushes, trying to avoid any survivors that might pass by. They had started calling her a witch at some point, and it only gave her yet another reason to sob louder. Her memories were scattered, she couldn't even remember her name. Maybe it really was 'Witch'? She wasn't sure but the thought of having such a name wasn't saying much about how she was when she could actually remember things.
Occasionally, someone would come looking for her, aiming to kill her. It was always one stray from the group. When she heard them getting close, she would growl in warning. She didn't want to kill, she didn't. But she had to live, she remembered that somehow. It was a promise to…someone. When the human got too close, she'd scream loudly, an ear piercing shriek that would deafen one if not careful. The survivor came within viewing range, and she attacked, screaming loudly and clawing into flesh until she knew they were no longer. After such a terrible, merciless murder, she ran off deeper into the woods, screaming until she was far enough that no one could hear her. Then she resumed her crying.
She didn't know how long it's been since she's been like this. On her wrist there was something with numbers, but she wasn't sure of how to read it, and she risked clawing herself if she tried to take it off. Mornings and nights passed, and she huddled up to her blanket each time.
One night was different. There was a noise, a low, throaty snarl, different from any of the common infected that socialized around the area. She looked around, her crimson eyes scanning the darkness. It got louder, and higher pitched. And then suddenly, there it was, right in front of her.
An infected, crouched on all fours with a dark, bloodstained hoodie covering his face. She didn't growl, instead she stared. He returned the stare, with a low, non-threatening growl of his own. She couldn't explain it. She felt…safe?
I promised you…
Her eyes widened as she suddenly remembered a thing of the past.
That I'd find you, didn't I?
