Chapter 5 – Mysterious Dreams

It had been turbulent in Konoha for quite a while after the 'Uchiha Cleansing' that was done on the Fire Daimyo's orders. But eventually the village had calmed and accepted the reality of what had occurred. The Heads of the Shinobi Clans were gathered together to acknowledge the newest member of their ranks and discuss the future of the village.

"I, Uchiha Itachi, swear to serve the Hokage faithfully with the full strength of myself and my Clan for as long as we reside within Konohagakure no Sato." Itachi pledged the, much reduced, Uchiha Clan to the village as he bowed before the Hokage. The other Clan Heads watched on, several of them happy that a reasonable person like Itachi had taken leadership over the Uchiha Clan. No longer having to listen to Fugaku's demands every meeting would be a welcome change.

"I accept your pledge of loyalty, Uchiha Itachi, rise and take your seat among your peers." Hiruzen stated formally and Itachi rose from his bow and moved to take the empty space reserved for the Uchiha Clan Head. Once the young man was seated Hiruzen began the meeting. "How are the children of your clan coping, Itachi?"

"As well as can be expected, Hokage-sama. We'll be making use of the offer for therapy given by the Yamanaka Clan." Itachi replied before giving a brief nod towards Yamanaka Inoichi. The Yamanaka Head nodded back reassuringly to the new Clan Head.

"Hopefully the children can heal and come to terms with what has come to pass." Hiruzen nodded before moving onto the next topic of the meeting. "Now, as to how we'll have to redistribute the patrols of the Police Force now that the Uchiha aren't able to handle all of the tasks…"

-Academy-

Namikaze Naruto, currently nine years old, was sitting in his class listening to Iruka-sensei lecture about the Second Shinobi War. While he didn't often find history interesting he was a dutiful student and paid attention to the lessons. Thankfully for the young boy they were about to wrap u history and start practical application of their training. He was looking forward to getting to test his developing skills and see what he needed to improve upon.

"Alright class, that's all for today." Iruka announced a few minutes later. "Now let's make our way outside in an orderly fashion to start physical training." The students stood up, some cheering at being done with the book work for the day, and followed their sensei outside. While waiting for his turn at the first practice area, Naruto thought back on a recent dream he'd had. Technically it was the same dream he'd been having as it was recurring at multiple nights for the last two weeks.

'The same dream over and over again. Does it mean something?' Naruto mused as he thought back on the dream. He'd be in what could only be described as a desert, sand as far as the eye could see. Then the sky would darken and rain would begin to fall. From the sand an oasis would rapidly grow and a silhouette would become visible. It appeared to be a child close to his age but they carried something with them. It was only in the last few recurrences of the dream that Naruto had discovered the object to be a large folding fan. The silhouette had swung the large fan in his direction this past night kicking up a fierce gale and causing Naruto to awaken.

"Maybe grandfather will know what it means?" Naruto hummed to himself before hearing his name called and stepping forward to perform the required task, Shuriken Throwing. The Namikaze Heir performed his exercises near flawlessly throughout the training time. When it came time for Ninjutsu practice Naruto, as usual, moved a fair distance away from the rest of the students to practice Katon Ninjutsu after completing the Kawarimi and the Henge. They were going to start learning the Bunshin no jutsu next week according to Iruka-sensei.

Many would call the Namikaze Kekkei Genkai overpowered. The ability to conjure and manipulate flames with just their chakra and will made the Namikaze powerful from the beginning. Their ability to control when and where the fire appeared and how hot it was made many unable to even get close to the Daimyo Shinobi. It was why the Fire Daimyo in the distant past had made the Namikaze Clan his personal Shinobi Force. No enemy had been able to make it passed the combination of the Fire Daimyo's Samurai Forces and the Namikaze Shinobi since they'd been brought together. This had led to an unbroken line of succession for the current line of the Daimyo Family for countless generations. Naruto knew, without having to be told, that he was expected to uphold the Clan's reputation and to bring about a new branch of the Namikaze within Konoha. This would further solidify the Fire Daimyo's control and influence within the village.

"Seems they've decided to watch again." Naruto sighed with small smile as he saw some of his classmates watching his Katon practice. With a small wave of his hand flames appeared and with but a thought they were launched at his targets. The wooden dummies were engulfed in fire and Naruto quickly snuffed out the flames with another thought. These exercises where given to him by his grandfather to refine his control over the Kaenshoutei. Without proper control the flames were as much a danger as they were an asset. Naruto, who had dreams of one day mastering the Shinseihi, made control one of his top priorities. A deep exhale and Naruto brought forth a large conflagration surrounding the burnt dummies. With his chakra he made the flames spin around the dummies without touching them. The swirling flames rose into the air and towered over his side of the practice grounds drawing the eyes of everyone. Naruto slowly brought the towering spiral of flames down. The massive fire slowly shrank as he pulled his chakra away from it until nothing remained except a brief heat haze.

"Next movement." Naruto breathed in before calling forth his bloodline limit again. This time three lines of fire raced from directly in front of him and towards the dummies. The dummies once again burst into flames once the lines of flame touched them. Naruto raised his hands up pulling the flames off the dummies before forcing them into small spheres of fire surrounding the dummies in a circle. These were the newest techniques that Naruto was learning from his grandfather, known as Shōbō Undō (Fire Control Movement) they were the control techniques that allowed a Kaenshoutei user to not only attack an opponent but to trap them or even defend a location without risk of burning anything. This level of control was absolutely necessary before learning the higher techniques of the Namikaze Clan. Naruto brought all of the spheres back towards himself before combining them into one large ball. With the proper application of chakra the ball became a perfectly square wall of fire hovering in the air. With a few motions of his hands the wall of fire turned into a multitude of shuriken-shaped flames. The flames shuriken were then launched one after another at the dummies, each one sliced through the targets piece by piece. After the last shuriken had sliced through the dummies it was quickly dispersed and Naruto exhaled deeply again.

"That was amazing!" Sakura exclaimed as the rest of the class started applauding the show of skill. Naruto smiled and gave a polite bow to his classmates and both Iruka and Mizuki. The excitement of the students made it hard for Iruka and Mizuki to get the class settled again for more exercises but the two Chuunin managed after some time.

-Sunagakure no Sato-

"Ugh…" A young blonde girl groaned as she went through her War Fan katas.

"What's wrong, Temari; didn't sleep well again?" A young brown-haired boy asks a he was slowly making a wooden doll move with chakra strings.

"Shut up…Kankuro" Temari yawned as she finished the kata she was going through.

"Was it the dream again?" Kankuro questioned his older sister making the blonde girl sigh and turn to her younger brother.

"Yeah…I just keep having the same dream. It's like my brain never tires of showing me the same thing over and over again." Temari grumbled as she grabbed her water bottle and drank.

"Maybe it's trying to tell you something?" Kankuro proposed as he got the wooden doll to stand up and start walking.

"It can't be anything good." Temari shook her head. "I dream of fire of all things. Just what we don't need any more of in the desert, heat! Why can't I dream of water or rain or something we do need?"

"Did you get anything else from the dream?" Kankuro asked turning to face his sister. "You said the dream got longer each time." Temari's cheeks went slightly pink at what she'd been able to discern last time from her dream.

"Sort of…" Temari mumbled before shaking her head. Seeing Kankuro look at her expectantly the blonde huffed before deciding to just tell her brother. "In the flames, there was a silhouette, a boy I'm pretty sure."

"So you're dreaming of boys and fire?" Kankuro chuckled making Temari glare at her little brother.

"Shut up!" Temari growled as she raised her closed fan like a bludgeoning weapon.

"Alright, alright! Geez, you don't have to be so violent!" Kankuro waved his hands in front of himself. Temari lowered her fan back to the ground. "How're you going to attract your fiery boyfriend with a temper like that?" He snarked before taking off running with Temari in hot pursuit screaming threats of violence.

-Konoha-

"So you've been having this reoccurring dream for a while." Yamamoto stated as he ran a hand through his beard.

"Yes, Oji-san, but I don't know what it means or if it means anything." Naruto replied as they sat together on the back porch.

"For now just keep learning more from it each time. It may reveal its nature soon enough on its own." Yamamoto suggested and Naruto nodded in agreement. "For now show me how far you've come with your training." With that the two stood and walked towards the center of the training area behind the Main House of the Namikaze compound.

"I'm ready, Oji-san." Naruto bowed getting one in return from Yamamoto.

"Use everything you have, Naruto. I want to see how far you've come. If I think you're holding back I'll demonstrate more power than you can handle, do you understand?" Yamamoto questioned his grandson.

"Yes, Oji-san!" Naruto replied with determination.

"Then begin!" Yamamoto called out and Naruto instantly ignited a massive blaze behind his grandfather. The old man merely chuckled as he flared his own flames and blasted his grandson's attack away. "I see you've been working on your Shōbō Undō. But you still have much to learn."

"So it seems." Naruto smiled as he unleashed two Kassho Happa Ken towards his grandfather. The old man batted the fireballs into the air with his left hand before sending a wave of fire at his grandson. Naruto raised both of his hands and formed a Moeteirumon in front of himself to block the wave of fire. With a brief moment to focus as his technique dispersed Naruto formed a large ball of flame before using his chakra to compress it down several times. What was once a ball of fire a dozen feet in diameter was now a compressed ball of white fire no bigger than a softball. Naruto launched his white fireball at his grandfather the moment he came into view from the fading flames.

"I see you've been practicing well." Yamamoto grinned as the white fireball rocketed towards him. "Moeru Manto (Burning Cloak)." The old man intoned just before the white fireball struck and exploded covering the area in fire and smoke. Naruto grimaced knowing the purpose of the technique his grandfather had used and sent four lines of fire along the ground towards him. All four lines connected with something in the smoke and engulfed the area in flames. Naruto followed this up by sending out dozens of Bakuhotaru to blast the area around his grandfather. While the Bakuhotaru were going off, Naruto took his time and focused on increasing the heat of the flames in his hands. Red flame became orange, orange flame became yellow, yellow flame became white, and white flame slowly turned blue. Naruto waited for just a moment to stabilize the blue flame before rushing off to the side of the smoke cloud obscuring his grandfather. The smoke was suddenly waved away in one motion and Yamamoto stood there completely unharmed. The old man was clad in bright yellow-white flames all over his body.

"Moeru Manto is amazing." Naruto praised with a grin.

"It can be indeed." Yamamoto chuckled seeing the blue fire in his grandson's hands.

"Can it block blue fire?" Naruto asked as he launched a stream of blue flames at his grandfather. The old man was engulfed and Naruto poured more chakra into his flames to keep them going.

"It can with enough chakra." Yamamoto answered his grandson as his hand shot out of the blue inferno and grabbed his gi. With a heave the old man tossed the boy over his shoulder and Naruto had to disperse his flames to land properly.

"Let's see if this works." Naruto mused as he extended all the fingers on his right hand and coated it in flames. The flames formed a vaguely blade-like shape and became yellow-white like Yamamoto's Moeru Manto. "Kaen Seikei: Saisho no Fōmu – Netsuken (Flame Shaping: First Form – Heat Sword."

"You've even worked on your Kaen Seikei. I'm impressed, Naruto." Yamamoto praised his grandson.

"Thank you, Oji-san." Naruto accepted the praise before moving in with his technique at the ready. His first swing was deflected and he spun with the deflection to build up speed for his second strike. The thrust was dodged with the bare minimum of movement and Naruto had to duck to avoid a back fist to the face. The young boy followed up with slashes and stabs aimed at vital areas only for them to be blocked or redirected by his grandfather. What amazed the young boy was the fact that all of his attacks had been deflected with his grandfather's left hand. His grandfather was right-handed, which drove the point home that Naruto wasn't strong enough to even make his grandfather use his dominant hand.

"Show me some more, Naruto." Yamamoto requested and Naruto seemingly exploded into flames, a technique reminiscent of the Dai Kaen, but was only an imitation. His sight obscured by flames and smoke Yamamoto searched out his grandson with his chakra sensing skills. He smiled proudly when he felt the build-up of chakra coming from behind him.

"Kaen Seikei: Ni-banme no Fōmu – Yari o Shōkyaku (Flame Shaping: Second Form – Incinerate Spear)." Naruto intoned as he threw a spear of white fire at his grandfather's back.

"Excellent, Naruto, you've done well." Yamamoto praised as he spun around and caught the spear with his left hand. The construct stopped dead and was dispersed casually by the old man while Naruto was breathing deeply to steady himself.

"Not well enough yet." Naruto replied as he walked over towards his grandfather.

"I have decades more experience than you, my grandson." Yamamoto grinned as he patted Naruto's shoulder. "Do not feel discouraged, you'll only get better with time." The two made it to the porch again just as a servant was bringing out tea for them. As they got settled and had some tea they talked about Naruto's further training.

"I'm having some trouble with the third form of Kaen Seikei." Naruto admitted with a sigh. Yamamoto chuckled at his young grandson before asking about the problem.

"What are you having trouble with?" Yamamoto questioned as they listened to the soft 'clack' of the bamboo deer-scare.

"Maintaining the ring; it's difficult to maintain it and draw from it for other techniques at the same time. Just forming the ring is hard enough, using it is a whole other matter." Naruto explained and Yamamoto nodded in understanding.

"Would another demonstration help?" Yamamoto asked and Naruto nodded. With a chuckle the old man stood up and walked off the porch and several feet away from Naruto. "Kaen Seikei: San-banme no Fōmu – Nichiren (Flame Shaping: Third Form – Sun Wheel)." He intoned and a ring of yellow-white fire formed behind him, slowly spinning and looking like a corona from a star. "Focus is key for this technique. Once you form it you'll need to learn to split your focus and produce techniques from it." Yamamoto explained as he held out his left hand and a larger and much more defined 'Netsuken' formed around his whole forearm. The 'Nichiren' spinning behind him had supplied the fire making the 'Netsuken' yellow-white by default instead of having to focus to attain the proper temperature. The 'Netsuken' then transformed into a 'Yari o Shōkyaku' without losing any of its heat as the 'Nichiren' once again supplied the flames.

"Splitting my focus is difficult. If I take my focus off the 'Nichiren' for even a moment it either drops sharply in temperature or it collapses entirely." Naruto stated as his grandfather dispersed the flames and moved to sit back next to him.

"You still have many years at the Academy before you have to worry. As we are not in war time you'll graduate at sixteen so that gives you seven more years to hone your skills before you'll be sent on missions." Yamamoto stated as he sipped his tea.

"I know, Oji-san, but I feel like the sooner I master the Kaenshoutei the better off I'll be." Naruto sighed before sipping his own tea. "Once the basics have been mastered I can start working on the Final Form of our bloodline, the Youganshoutei (Lava Emperor). Only one that has mastered the Youganshoutei is allowed to learn the Shinseihi, so I want to get there as soon as I can, no matter how much work it takes."

"Your dedication is commendable, Naruto, but all things come in time." Yamamoto stated simply. "You'll reach your goals as you put in the time and effort to learn and control the Kaenshoutei. When the time comes that you eventually master even Youganshoutei, then I will personally instruct you in the ways of the Shinseihi."

"Yes, Oji-san, thank you for your wisdom." Naruto bowed slightly to his grandfather.

"In the intervening years we'll have to find you a wife to carry on the Namikaze lineage." Yamamoto smiled as his grandson turned red.

"You still agree we'll put that off until I'm at least fifteen, right Oji-san?" Naruto questioned making Yamamoto laugh as he ruffled his grandson's hair.

"Yes, yes, until you're fifteen at least." Yamamoto chuckled. "We'll more than likely start receiving offers when you turn thirteen though. I suppose that'll just give us more time to consider the options."

"I'm not really looking forward to that, Oji-san." Naruto sighed as he shook his head. Clan politics weren't something he was looking forward to having to deal with in the future. Maybe if he was lucky he'd meet a nice girl of 'proper' standing that could help take care of that kind of stuff.

"It can work out, Naruto, especially considering that we have time to find you a girl that you actually like and care for. I wouldn't just throw you into an arranged marriage without your say so. That is not the way of the Namikaze Clan." Yamamoto reassured his grandson.

"Thanks Oji-san, I appreciate it, but can we not talk about marriage until the marriage offers actually start coming in? I'm way too young to be considering marriage to begin with." Naruto requested and Yamamoto chuckled at his grandson and his aversion to the topic.

"Very well, Naruto, we'll wait for the offers to come in." Yamamoto agreed. "Now how has your progress in the Academy been?"

"I'm maintaining the number one spot in the rankings so far, Oji-san." Naruto informed his grandfather. "Though I must admit that Uchiha Sasuke is a very close second when it comes to shuriken jutsu. Haruno Sakura is also very close to me in the standard courses, she's a good student in that regard, needs to put in a bit more effort on the practical training though."

"How have your friends been?" Yamamoto asked knowing his son was friends with multiple Clan Heirs.

"Kiba is still loud and brash, but he works hard and is improving his skills. Chouji is apparently having some trouble with his Clan's jutsu. I think it's mostly a lack of confidence though rather than any lack of talent. Shikamaru is…well…Shikamaru, still less motivated, but sharp of mind like most of his Clan. If he had a bit more motivation I don't doubt that he'd be gunning for my position right now." Naruto talked about his friends and Yamamoto nodded always happy to hear about his grandson's life.

"Hmm, what of young Yamanaka Ino and Hyuuga Hinata?" Yamamoto inquired of the only two Clan Heiresses in his grandson's year.

"Ino is confident and always ranks at the top of the Kunoichi students. She only loses to Sakura in bookwork. Hyuuga-san is rather introverted and shy; she also seems to lack confidence. I'm uncertain as to why considering she shows amazing flexibility during warm up stretches and Taijutsu practice." Naruto replied as he sipped his tea.

"I see, perhaps the Hyuuga Heiress has a more gentle spirit than most of her family?" Yamamoto pondered as he took a sip of his own tea. "A lack of aggression and killer instinct can be detrimental for a shinobi. But there are lines of shinobi work that require grace, subtlety, and demureness. Perhaps she will look towards those types of missions; then again she may focus solely on becoming the next Head of the Hyuuga Clan. She'd be limited on missions in that position but it is her current future."

"Will I become the next Head of the Namikaze?" Naruto asked since his grandfather was the current Head.

"If you do you'd have to move to the Capital." Yamamoto stated before shrugging. "If you'd rather not then one of your cousins, either Hao or Rin, will be the next head. Though neither seem all that inclined to take it from the other, it seems it might come down to which of them decides to take the responsibility first."

"Hmm, it's been a while since I saw either of them. How are Shunsui-ojisan and Juushiro-ojisan doing with them?" Naruto inquired about his uncles and their sons. Yamamoto had only had one son in his life, Naruto's father Minato, but he'd had a younger brother that had died while on a mission when they had been in their late twenties. His deceased brother had left behind a wife and two sons, Juushiro and Shunsui; that Yamamoto had taken in as his own. The two men had grown up and married years before Naruto was born and each had a son. Juushiro's son Hao, calm and collected like his father, and Shunsui's son Rin, a bit of a hot head but valued family above all else, also known for indulging in the occasional bouts of laziness with his father. Both were in their teens now with Hao being slightly older at seventeen while Rin was sixteen.

"Both are currently in training to learn the Shinseihi. Hao has started with Kin no Hi while Rin is determined to control Satsuen first." Yamamoto informed his grandson of the current goings on of the main Namikaze Family.

"Is Hiei-hatoko helping him with Satsuen? He's one of the best with that particular fire isn't he?" Naruto asked since he had only met his second cousin Hiei once before. Yamamoto had told him about the reclusive Namikaze and his mastery of the Satsuen.

"I believe he is. The last progress report I got from the Capital did have a short message from Hiei, he was declaring Rin a lazy slacker if I recall." Yamamoto sighed while Naruto broke out into chuckles. Trust Rin to get on the ever serious Hiei's nerves.

"Namikaze-sama, dinner will be ready in an hour. I wanted to inform you in case either of you wished to take a bath first." Kaya, the Head Servant, informed the two.

"Thank you Kaya, we'll both be using the onsen to clean up before dinner." Yamamoto informed the woman who bowed and left the men quickly. "Come along Naruto, we have enough time for a relaxing bath before dinner."

"Of course Oji-san." Naruto smiled as he followed along behind his grandfather. A warm bath and a good dinner was just what he needed after training. He had a long way to go with his skills but he was determined to become a Namikaze worthy of wielding the Shinseihi. His other responsibilities, like finding a wife to create a new Branch of the Clan here in Konoha could be put aside for at least a few more years.

There we go! Naruto is getting stronger and mastering more of his bloodline! Also are he and a certain Desert Flower having similar dreams? What's that about? I guess we'll find out over time!

This may be the last chapter for a good while friends and fans. My muse for the Naruto series is almost dead. A this point it's almost like beating my head against the wall to get out any updates. I may have to leave these stories on the backburner and only update them when I already have a chapter written, rather than let them be voted on by my Patrons. We'll see what happens.

Until I get your reviews, later!
