CHAPTER 24: ONE MARK TO OUTSIN THEM ALL

The dust that had gathered on the altar's floor over the years, was still flying after Galantmon's mad dash towards the Demon Lord. A mad dash that should have, by all means, marked the beginning of a brutal battle, the likes of which he had never seen before. A battle that had ended in the fastest and most anticlimactic, as Guilmon had surprisingly said, way in history.

"Galantmon, are you ok? What's happening?" Gennai's anxious voice finally snapped Galantmon out of his stupor. He cursed out loud and readjusted his lance, which was frozen in the same position it had skewered his opponent moments ago. He quickly focused his attention on his surroundings, half expecting a surprise attack from the Demon Lord. Yet, he knew that Daemon had plenty of time to ambush him while he was still acting like Kazu the first time he had asked a girl out (and brutally shot down).

"I am ok," He assured Gennai, still wary. When no attack came ten seconds later, he relaxed his posture, but kept his senses sharp nevertheless "Just a bit confused. Daemon is… gone?" Galantmon still couldn't believe the Demon Lord had fallen, despite having seen him burst into data.

"You mean escaped or hiding?" From the way Gennai phrased the question, it was clear he thought it was one or the other. For a long moment, Galantmon was tempted to say 'hiding', but the words died in his throat.

"More like destroyed, I'd say," There was no response from the other line; Galantmon didn't blame him "I initiated the fight without any plan, just charged at him with my lance. He didn't even try to dodge; he just stood there as I stabbed him in the chest. I saw him burst into data and then he was gone. I think he was even smirking, as if he wanted me to kill him," Saying that out loud had made him realize something. What if Daemon had something planned? It was either that or he was suicidal idiot, which he highly doubted.

"This makes absolutely no sense," Gennai finally answered "It will take him decades to reach the mega level again; what could he possibly gain by dying? Then again, it's not the first time a Digimon gets destroyed, only to suddenly appear in a new form a few hours later," Gennai was thinking aloud at this point, but Galantmon decided against interrupting him.

"Do you feel that Takato?" Guilmon whined and his voice echoed in the bubble inside Galantmon, gaining the brunette's attention "My belly feels weird, kind of like itching, but scratching it doesn't help," Takato did, but he only became aware of it the moment his partner mentioned it. His skin was tingling and he could feel the hair on his body stand on end.

"Yeah buddy, I do," He hugged his arms, but the feeling did not go away. A thought suddenly struck him, and he looked around, worried. The temple altar was still the same, empty room gathering dust, but there was something in the air; and it was not the dust.

The presence of something old and powerful.

"Gennai," Hearing his name called, Gennai stopped his train of thought "We are getting out of here," Galantmon was out of the door before Gennai could say anything.

The room was loud with cheers and laughter, accompanied by few tears of joy. Jeri didn't blame them; they had just gotten word that Daemon, the last of the Demon Lords, had fallen to the hands of Galantmon, marking the defeat of all their opponents without a single casualty. Although there was tension in the air and arguments threatened to explode between the families of the chosen and the executives of Hypnos not too long ago, everything had disappeared with the knowledge that the children were safe.

That brought its own set of… arguments though.

"Did you see how my son completely devastated that sorry excuse of a Merlin?" Kenta's father laughed loudly, a bottle of beer in his hand "Have you ever looked anyone cooler than him? He is so grounded for that stunt though," His wife was shaking her head in disappointment at her husband's half-drunk state, but there was no hiding the pride in her eyes.

"You obviously weren't looking at my sons, because they were cooler!" Matt and T.K's father, Hiroaki, was laughing in a similar drunken state "Riding the amazing archangel and charging towards the spawns of hell!"

Jeri could only shake her head in defeat at the arguing parents. She looked at Sora and Mimi, the first to return along with a sleeping Rika in Renamon's arms. The tamer was left to rest in another room with her mother and grandmother. Sora noticed her gaze and waved her over with a warm smile. Jeri was more than willing to join them; she liked both women, despite knowing them for only a few weeks.

"Hi Jeri," Mimi smiled, grasping her hands within her own "Sorry for making you take care of the parents; they must have been difficult to deal with," And with that, she winked playfully at her. Jeri laughed and looked at the a little more than tipsy adults.

"You know how they are; they need a teen to take care of them," She winked back and they both laughed, while Sora smiled fondly.

"It's really hard to stay behind and wait for your loved ones to come back," The redhead looked at Jeri after that "You must have been really worried," Jeri blinked and smiled sadly.

"I think anyone would be, in my shoes. Even though I've been doing this for a long time, it doesn't get much easier," She looked at the two, catching them exchanging a look "It's far better to actually fight".

"You don't want to ever get close to that Demon Lord," Mimi winced at a memory; she was also… blushing? "That power of hers was disturbing," Jeri tilted her head in confusing, but Mimi didn't elaborate and just whispered something about… sexy geeks? She looked at Sora and the redhead winced as well.

"She was the Demon Lord of Lust," Jeri put two and two together and her eyes widened, just as Mimi's blush brightened "I quite agree; you don't want to get within a radius of a mile or two of her".

"At least she's gone now," Jeri smiled and linked her arms with Sora and Mimi "What do you say we get something to drink and celebrate?" Mimi's face brightened, causing Sora to smile.

"We can talk about fashion!" Jeri liked fashion, just as much as any other girl that wasn't Rika. Even if she wasn't though, there's no way she could refused Mimi's delighted face and innocent smile. They had each received their refreshments and were about to make a toast, when the door opened and Kazu entered the room, along with Impmon and Guardromon.

"Hey, where's our hero's welcome? You could have at least laid a red carpet," His father moved and wrapped him in a one-arm hug over the shoulder.

"Like you deserve a hero's welcome, you oaf!" He suddenly turned the hug into a headlock and started to rub his head "I bet you just stood there, shouting like a cheerleader!"

"Not even dat," Impmon was grinning, but his eyes were half closed, and his face looked tired. Guardromon was just standing there, watching Kazu with his emotionless gaze.

"Cut it out! And who are you calling oaf, you troll? What the heck are you talking about Impmon? I was extremely helpful, you stupid clown!" Despite his angry words, Kazu was grinning from ear to ear. The girls' attention was elsewhere though; a few people were talking with a serious expression on their faces.

"He's right," Davis' father said and the rest, being Kenta's, Tai and Kari's and Hiroaki, nodded in agreement "We definitely need a red carpet, some party poppers and huts".

"Don't forget the vuvuzelas!" Kenta's suddenly shouted, and the eyes of the rest widened in shock.

"How could we forget?!" Both Hiroaki and Tai and Kari's father loudly exclaimed.

"Did they really take what I said seriously?" Kazu, who had finally managed to free himself from his father, asked. Jeri would have explained, had she not been failing to control her giggles. Kazu's gaze moved to the bottle of sake on the table and the beers on their hands and it clicked "Never mind. What're you girls drinking?" He asked, looking at the them, who had finally managed to bring their laugher under control.

"Just soda," Sora smiled and offered him hers, before getting another one for herself. Jeri offered one to Impmon, but the Digimon refused and went to join Renamon.

"How were things on your end? You are not hurt, are you?" Jeri looked Kazu up and down, but her friend just smiled and gave her a thumb's up.

"It was hectic, that's for sure, but everything turned out ok. What about the others? I was told everything's ok, but are they really?" Jeri knew him too well to be fooled by the seemingly casual way he was asking.

"No one is actually hurt, just exhausted," She looked at the door Impmon had just gone through "Rika was sleeping when she returned from the digital world and, judging by the way he looked, Impmon is probably joining her," Kazu's face uncharacteristically darkened.

"I am not surprised," He let out a long sigh "I don't know about Lilithmon, but Beelzemon was a hell of an opponent. I thought our Beelzemon, of all peopl… I mean digimon, was a goner at least twice," The fact Kazu was acting like that, painted a pretty clear picture of the fight to Jeri.

"Our battle with Lilithmon was like that too," Sora smiled, bringing her bottle of soda forward "But it's in the past now; all seven of the Demon Lords are gone. Cheers to that!" Kazu laughed and that was enough for Jeri, who raised her bottle to Sora. Mimi and Kazu followed her lead.

"To our victory!" Sora toasted.

"To our friends!" Jeri agreed.

"To fashion!" Mimi's toast earned her weird looks from the girls and a laugh from Kazu.

"To hot babes in swimsuits!" Kazu's toast was followed by silence, not only from the girls, but from the people around them.

"To vuvuzelas!" Kenta's father, face red, suddenly shouted, raising a party popper.

"Is it just me, or are the toasts becoming weirder by the second?" Came T.K's bemused voice from the door, drawing the party's gaze to him and the rest of the chosen children fighting in the real world.

"The poppers!" Someone shouted, and a few poppers were opened… in completely random directions. People burst out laughing, but Jeri merely smiled. There was this feeling that had been growing ever since the celebration had started, to the point she could no longer ignore it… a feeling of dread.

When Takato and Guilmon finally came within sight of the portal back to the human world, the sun was already setting on the horizon. Having been running at full speed for half an hour to reach the altar and another half to leave the temple, had left him feeling drained. He was forced to walk almost the whole way back. Since Gennai had informed him the battles were over, there was no rush. He didn't complain though; it gave him time to think about what had happened with Daemon.

"I've talked to Izzy," Gennai's voice was distant. He was probably away from the speaker "He will try to subtly get Henry out of the room, so we can get to the bottom of this without alarming the others".

"Good idea, we don't want to worry them and end up just being paranoid," The feeling had lessened after they had left the temple, to the point Takato could ignore it, but it was still there "We are almost at the portal; we'll be back in a couple of minutes".

"That's good. Hopefully, Izzy and Henry will already be here by then," Gennai was still away from the speaker, making it hard for Takato to make out what he was saying "Izzy has a couple of theories that we can look into and probably Henry wi…" Gennai's voice became indistinguishable at this point.

"I can't hear you Gennai, you need to come closer to the speaker," He waited for a moment, but there was no reply from the other line. Instead, he became aware of a steadily increasing sound of static "Can you hear me? Gennai?" He tapped the earpiece a couple of times, but not only didn't the static clear, it worsened to the point he had to remove it.

"What's wrong Takano? Is your ear itchy?" Guilmon's innocent question did little to prevent the worry from surfacing again. What could have possibly disrupted the communication between the Digital and the Real World?

"I have a bad feeling about this," He muttered, before turning to face his partner "Let's quicken our pace buddy," Guilmon tilted his head in confusion, but yelped and rushed after a running Takato.

"There's no need to run Takato, just scratch it a bit and the itch will go!" Takato did stop a few seconds later, but it was not thanks to Guilmon's useful tip. He had finally reached the portal, but what greeted him was not the image of the room in Hypnos.

It was static.

"There goes our way back to the Real World," Any doubts he might have felt about his easy win against Daemon, were dispelled "And we have no way of contacting Gennai. What should we do now?"

"Let's jump into the TV, that might do the trick!" Takato didn't have the time stop his partner from doing just that. Guilmon crushed on the screen face first, before comically sliding to the ground "We should wait until midnight and try again," He said, rubbing his snout in the process.

"Let's just wait for Gennai, Henry and Izzy to restore the connection," He laughed lightly and patted Guilmon's head, before sitting on the ground, next to the TV. Not even a second later though, he was forced back on his feet, by his partner growling "What's wrong buddy? Is someone coming?" Guilmon going Feral Mode was never a good thing; it wasn't a good thing this time either. Following his partner's line of sight, his eyes widened at the storm clouds gathering in the distance, above a weird looking red bubble.

"Ta…to…you h…me…to?" Takato's head snapped to the TV. He could vaguely make out three figures in the static, one of them standing close to the speaker.

"There's too much static Henry, I can't understand what you're saying," Takato came closer to the TV, hoping to make out what his friend was trying to say.

"Wha…oing on…ry…ion with…tal World ha…t off!" He tried hard to make out what Izzy was saying, but the only thing he got was 'What's going on' and something about the Digital World.

"I don't know guys!" He said slowly and loudly, hoping it would be easier to understand "There's a storm in the distance," He turned his gaze towards the storm clouds he'd seen earlier and found, to his horror, that Guilmon was running towards them "No, buddy, get back here!" He rushed after the enraged dinosaur, just as the static returned. There was something else on the screen though.

A symbol in blood red color.

"I know you are exhausted, but this is no time to be sleeping," Rika opened her eyes, coming face to face with Sakuyamon Miko Mode. The expression behind the woman's fox mask was serious, making Rika uneasy. She looked around, confirming she was standing in front of the altar, just like earlier that day.

"What do you mean? I thought almost every Demon Lord was destroyed," Miko Mode's expression didn't change into het disturbing grin, the one she had shown during the whole conversation (albeit short one) they had when they were fighting Lilithmon. Somehow, that only unnerved her even more.

"Indeed, they were. Unfortunately, this is not the end; not even close," Sakuyamon MM's grip on her staff grew tighter "I can feel it, even though I am suppressed inside you. Daemon has awakened something that has been lying dormant, since before the original war between the Royal Knights and the Demon Lords".

"Great, that's not ominous at all," Rika remarked, before looking at the Digimon again "Somehow, I doubt you'll tell me what that something is," Sakuyamon MM's silence only served to irritate Rika "How can you expect me to do anything about it, if I don't know what it is in the first place? How can I fight it?"

"Oh, you cannot come in contact with it, let alone fight it," Rika froze. She knew she wasn't the strongest of the team, that honor belonged to Takato and Guilmon, but she believed she could at least put up a fight against the strongest of opponents. Sakuyamon MM seemed to know what she was thinking, because she continued "There's only one of you that actually stands a chance against that thing. Alone though, they will fail; they will need your support, but it has nothing to do with fighting,"Sakuyamon MM paused and gave Rika a penetrating gaze "They will need you and your friends for moral support. For what they will be fighting, is an opponent that can cause them as much emotional harm as physical".

"I don't get it!" Rika shouted in frustration "Just tell me what it is; it will give us an advantage, won't it?" Sakuyamon MM stayed silent for a moment, but soon looked up.

"I'm afraid our time is over," She looked at Rika and smiled weakly "It's time for you to wake up".

The next moment, Rika was staring at a worried Kenta. She blinked and looked around, spotting Renamon standing by the door and Kazu, arms crossed, looking at her with a serious expression she had only seen him using trice before. Her mother and grandmother were nowhere to be seen.

"What's going on?" She asked no one in particular. Kenta hesitated for a moment, before Kazu uncrossed his arms and said in a steely voice.

"We've lost contact with Takato," For a long moment, her brain couldn't process the information. She moved her gaze to Kenta and Renamon, expecting either of them to laugh and shout 'just kidding', but their expressions didn't change "A few minutes ago, Henry told us that the gate to the Digital World and communication with Takato were getting weaker, until they completely broke down".

"Just great," She brought her right hand to her face, massaging her aching eyes "How's everyone holding up?"

"Mostly as you'd expect," Kenta sighed and sat on the sofa next to the couch she had been sleeping in "The Monster Makers are trying to force a portal open, with Gennai, Henry and Izzy throwing ideas. Jeri and Suzie are trying to cheer everyone up, but it's not that hard to see they are really worried," His mobile rang, signaling a message and he pulled it out.

"What about you?" She stood up and approached Kazu, his eyebrow rising in amusement. He gave her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes and opened his mouth to speak, but Rika cut him off "Yeah smartass, I do care," Kazu truly smiled at that, but it soon returned into the serious look he held before.

"Worried; both of us are." He looked at Kenta, who was typing something on his phone "Don't get me wrong, I know Takato is strong, but I get the feeling things are about to get worse than the D-Reaper".

"I know the feeling," She half expected him to comment on this, but he stayed silent "I had a dream of sorts," She decided to say, before looking at Renamon. Her partner's eyes narrowed and her jaw tightened, indicating she somehow knew what she was talking about. Like Kazu though, she remained quiet. Kenta had closed the phone and joined them by this point.

She told them about the dream and the 'something' that Daemon had awakened.

"I'm going to give you three guesses on who the only one that can fight it is. Somehow, I doubt you'll need more than one, though," Kenta sighed once again. MarineAngemon floated out of his pocket and nuzzled her partner, probably sensing his distraught. Rika was about to answer, when the door opened, and Suzie poked her head in.

"They've opened a portal, but they don't know how long it's going to stay open," She looked at each of them, the unspoken question hanging in the air.

"We're coming," All three of their voices held no hesitation.

The storm clouds were surprisingly close… and small. Takato and Guilmon had been running for barely 10 minutes, before stopping on the cliff a couple dozen meters away. Turns out, the bubble was red fog in the form of a sphere. Whatever that thing was, it was calmly moving around the sphere, a complete contrast to the booming clouds overhead and the violent waves, just sort on touching the other side of the fog. Guilmon had stopped running and was growling at it, eyes wide and unblinking. Takato couldn't help but stare worriedly as well. The feeling had returned full force, making him certain whatever was causing it was inside that fog. Every now and then he would look around, hoping Henry and the rest would appear.

They stayed like that for a while, maybe five minutes, before Takato turned to his partner.

"I don't like this buddy," He placed a hand on Guilmon's head, but the Digimon didn't react at all "Let's get back to the portal, come one," Guilmon didn't make any indication of hearing him. He actually started growling louder. Takato decided to try and pull him by the neck, but before he could wrap his arms around him, the flow of the fog accelerated. As if the red fog had been heated to the point it was expanding and could no longer be contained.

A few seconds later, the bubble burst. Takatao fell back in surprise, landing on his backside, while the fog engulfed the cliff. Standing back up, he was finally able to see exactly what the fog was covering. It was a creepy looking gate, like the ones you'd see in a demon mansion or castle in fantasy or thriller movies. It was huge, with seven multicolored sigils spread across the surface. Takato wasn't scared by its size, neither its shape. He was terrified by the pair of eyes on the skull on top. Blood red, with a mark in black for irises. A mark Takato knew all too well.

Then, The Gate started opening.

In the end, only the Tamers, Impmon and Cody went through the portal. After MetalDevimon's scheme, it was decided that they would split their powers equally into two teams. The Tamers would find out what was happening in the digital world, while the Digidestined would stay back in the real world and defend it against whatever this 'something' Rika spoke, had in mind. Cody had joined the Tamers as a guide. Both teams had a computer expert to keep the communications from failing, like what happened with Takato. Izzy was the one on the Digidestined's side.

The one on the Tamers' side was naturally Henry.

The moment they had stepped into the digital world, the communications channel was filled with static, but the bluenette had stabilized it with little effort. If only he could do the same for the uneasiness that had taken over him.

"This is seriously weird," Kenta was looking at the dark sky, free of the layers he was familiar with "I almost can't tell the difference between the real world and this digital world".

"No kidding," Kazu's serious expression had changed into wonder as he followed Kenta's lead "I didn't notice it during the battle against Beelzemon, but it's totally different from the world we've been to.

"As much as I'd love to stare at the scenery all day, we have a friend to find," Rika snarky response brought a sense of nostalgia to Henry. It had been years since she had acted like this.

"That's true," Henry pocketed the communication device the Monster Makers had given him "We better get a move on".

"Do we have any idea where to find Takato?" Jeri's question caught Henry off guard. While he knew where Takato was heading from the portal, he had no idea where the portal they had used had transferred them. Thankfully, he was saved by Impmon.

"How about that freakishly oversized blood cell over dere? The one with the black symbol dat seems to have come out of a geometry test" Following his pointed finger, Henry's body froze, and his blood ran cold. That 'oversized blood cell', as Impmon called it, was a big blood colored sphere in the distance. What terrified him though was not the sphere, but the black symbol. It was a circle, with an upside-down triangle inside, while each side of the triangle extended further, creating the sides of three triangles.

"Hey Cody, what is that thing?" Suzie stepped closer to her boyfriend and grabbed his hand.

"I don't know," Although Cody was good at masking his emotions, Henry could still see the surprise and confusion on his face "I've never seen anything like this before".

"I have a bad feeling about this," Jeri took a step back, looking at the sphere with fearful eyes "Whatever that thing is, I don't think it's good news".

"It's definitely not good news," Everyone looked at Henry in surprise to his dark tone. Henry stared at Rika and he could see the terror he felt reflected in her eyes. They both finally knew the face of their true enemy, but they wished they didn't "This is definitely an opponent we can't win against".

"I don't like the sound of that," Ryo had turned his gaze towards the sphere, his eyes hard "I don't know what makes you so sure, but it's not hard to believe by the strong malevolent power that thing reeks".

"Cut it out already!" Kazu shouted in irritation "Stop acting like Sakuyamon Miko Mode did and explain already!"

"Correct me if I'm wrong, but, isn't that symbol on Guilmon's chest?" Kenta's observation caused the rest, minus Rika and Henry to look at it again.

"Dat's true!" Impmon exclaimed "Come to think of it, it's on all his evolutions as well; all the way up to Tincanknightmon".

"It is," Rika sighed, "It's the symbol of a dangerous virus Guilmon was passed on by Takato. And Takato was born with it," The others, especially Jeri looked at her with wide eyes. Henry didn't blame them; he only knew about it since his father had told Rika and him about it a while back "It's also the reason the two of them are so strong and share a connection none of us do".

"Hold on a second," Suzie looked at Henry "What kind of virus is that? How come Takato's never suffered from it?"

"We don't know," Henry massaged his eyes, already feeling the headache coming "But we only know it was something that existed long before the digital world was even created. It's also the most powerful thing in existence, according to my father. It's called The Digital Hazard".

Takato didn't know what to expect from the gate, so before it was fully opened, he had already bio-merged with Guilmon into Gallantmon. At first, there was nothing inside the gate, but darkness. A few moments later though, a figure Gallantmon knew stepped out of the gate; it was Beelzemon. He had his eyes closed and his head high. He took a deep breath and exhaled loudly, before opening his eyes and looking at his body, while flexing his arms.

"What is this power?" He asked in disbelief "It's… beyond imagination!"

"Move out of the way, will you?" An angry voice snapped him out of his thoughts and moved away a few steps. The next to leave the gate was Lucemon FM. Like Beelzemon, he flexed his arms and stretched his wings "Now we're talking! Next time a face those fools, I'll make sure to squash them!" The rest of the Demon Lords soon emerged. Lilithmon was next, followed by Barbamon, Leviamon, Belphemon and, finally, Daemon. All the while, Gallantmon was kneeling up the hill, unnoticed by them.

"I have to admit we underestimated our opponents," Barbamon stoke his beard with a frown "They were more resourceful than I originally thought".

"Stronger as well," Leviamon's tail twitched in irritation "Those damn humans have a way to give their Digimon incredible power boosts," Lucemon FM's face twisted in a snarl at the reminder.

"Do not trouble yourselves my brothers," Daemon calmly said, ignoring Lilithmon's frown "No matter the boost those feeble humans provide them with, we have ascended to a whole other level," Gallantmon didn't like the sound of that. As if them all resurrecting wasn't bad enough. 'Wait a minute; a whole other level?' He looked at the eyes of skull again before staring at the Demon Lords with wide eyes.

"True!" Beelzemon laughed and wielded his guns, turning around and shooting a nearby boulder. A loud explosion followed, and the boulder was reduced to dust. Gallantmon felt a chill run down his spine. It wasn't due to the power of the attack though. His gaze was locked on the blood red mark on the back of Beelzemon's jacket.

"Are you insane?" He shouted, earning the attention of the surprised Demon Lords "You willinglyallowed that thing inside your body?" His gaze sifted between the seven of them, spotting the mark on the back of Belphemon's hand and above Lilithmon's chest.

"How did you," Daemon started, but then he noticed the mark on Gallantmon's chest and knees and his eyes widened "Interesting. Unlike the original Gallantmon, you are a holder of The Digital Hazard".

"What?" Lilithmon exclaimed and she, along with the rest followed his gaze "I thought you said," She started, but she was interrupted by Lucemon FM.

"He was clearly mistaken," Daemon's eyes narrowed at Lucemon FM, but he focused again on Gallantmon.

"Don't you think it's hypocritical of you to scold us for something you have done yourself?"

"There's a big difference between us Daemon!" Gallantmon's rage had been replaced by an ice coolness. They had meddled with powers beyond their understanding. They had crossed a line that should never had been crossed "I hope you are ready to accept the consequences of your actions Demon Lords! Shield of the Just!"

End of Chapter

Yes, I am alive. I am also aware I missed the deadline I set by a tiny margin. I am not going to give excuses though. I will only say that my weekly schedule leaves me with little free time, which I dedicate to practicing the Piano (which I just started playing in October) and reading. That means I don't know when the next chapter will be out, but I can assure you I am finishing this story.

Now that that's over, here's a question for you: Can you spot the Book/Movie reference and the Video Game reference?

Oh, I am also going to Japan with a few friends for 2 weeks in October! Does any of you have any recommendations for places we can visit?
