A/N: This is my first Harry Potter fic. It was done by request for a Nutcracker Meme I did on LiveJournal. The individual chose "Dance of the Reed Flutes" and asked for something with Lily in it, so I came up with this. It's not much, but I decided to post it since I'll be trying to do more Harry Potter fanfic shortly.

Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or the Nutcracker.

Warnings: Pre-canon, hints of Lily/James and Lily/Snape. Slight spoilers, concerning all the secrets that Deathly Hallows has to share.

Dance of the Reed Flutes
By: Nuit Songeur

The train would depart soon, she knew. So Lily's feet picked up speed as she carried herself, her suitcase, and the cage that held her cat toward the Great Hall. She had to find Severus soon, otherwise, she wouldn't be able to tell him goodbye. Even if he did started hanging around those creepy Death Eater wannabes, Mulciber and Avery, she wanted to say goodbye. Creepy boys. Lily shuddered at the thought of them. Hopefully Severus wouldn't be hanging around them when she found him. If she found him…

Soft music played as she entered the Great Hall. The familiar sound made her hesitate as she took a moment to identify the music. It was from the Nutcracker— Dance of the Reed Flutes. She found herself smiling as the flute parts trilled the harmonious melody. She sighed in longing.

"What's the matter?" Suddenly, James Potter was right beside her, making her blink back to the present.

"Nothing," she said, hurrying along, scanning the Slytherin house table for Severus. Potter followed her. She wished he would just go away, he was annoying enough as it was.

"You like the music?" Lily blinked again, finding that he was standing right in front of her.

"Well, yes. It reminds me of when my mum and dad took me to see the London Symphony once."

"And let me guess— they were playing Ka-VOW-sky?" Lily rolled her eyes at the incorrect pronunciation.

"Tchaikovsky," she corrected.

"Right, right."

"Now if you will excuse me," she said, trying to push past him. "I'm trying to find someone." Potter scoffed.

"Don't tell me you're looking for Snape." Lily leveled eyes with him.

"As a matter of fact, I am."

"I saw him near the dungeons. But you better hurry before you miss your train. Here, I'll help take some of that stuff for you." Before she could protest, Potter reached for her suitcase and cat. "I'll make sure they get on the train in time," he promised. As much as she would have liked to, Lily didn't argue with him and instead turned on her heel to head to the dungeons. As she left the Great Hall, the sound of Dance of the Reed Flutes dissipated.

As promised, she found Severus lingering outside the door to the dungeons. Thankfully, none of his creepy friends were with him.

"Severus!" she exclaimed, slightly breathless. He looked up at her approaching. "Good! I finally found you."

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"I wanted to say good bye, before I left," she explained.

"You're leaving? I thought you weren't going home for the break this year." Lily shrugged.

"Mum wanted me to this year. I didn't think you would mind—"

"I don't. You'd better go before the train leaves." Lily hesitated and pulled out a small box from her robes.

"Happy Christmas," she said, handing it to him with a small smile. He took it without a word. She waited until he opened it and pulled out the charm bracelet she had made for him before waving one last time and hurrying onto Hogsmeade, humming Dance of the Reed Flutes to herself.
