Just a Hint of Egg Plant

.

.

.

Ash and Pikachu stared out where the sky touched the sea. Ash closed his eyes and smiled at the feeling of the gentle breeze grazing his face. He took a whiff of the saltiness in the air from the sea, the feeling all too familiar to him from traveling for so long. The sky was clear, and it was a beautiful day.

It made everyone so cheery, excited for what was to come.

Ash noticed Brock walk by, said man accompanying him, leaning on the rail of the ship. They both smiled at each other, knowing they should be back at Kanto in no time.

"Do you know where you're heading to next?" Brock asked him, he too enjoying the wind blowing through his spiky brown hair. Ash merely shrugged.

"Not really," he answered. For one of the first times in a long time, he had no clue where he was going, unable to decide his next destination. His next journey was a mystery, which was odd by his standards. "What about you? Where are you going to go now? I don't really know what you have to do to become a doctor," Ash explained, sheepishly chuckling. Brock smiled, nodding in understanding.

"Well, for starters, I'm going to have to go to school to become a doctor." To that, Ash cringed at the thought, causing Brock to chuckle. There was no way Ash would ever go to school, after all. "For now though, I was planning to visit the Pewter City Gym. You know, visit family and make sure they're all okay." Ash nodded, before he looked back up to the deep blue sky.

"Wow, I still can't believe that after so long, you're not going to be traveling anymore," Ash said. "I'm really going to miss you. It's always fun with you there. You pretty much always took care of me, all of us. Out of everyone, I could always count on you. I really am going to miss you… especially your cooking – that was the best," Ash laughed sheepishly but honestly. Brock chuckled as well, touched by Ash's warm sentiments.

"I still remember when I went to Hoenn. Thank goodness I did too," Brock laughed, shaking his head at the memory. "Good times."

"I think we would have starved without you there," Ash admitted, chuckling now looking back as well. He remembered how miserable they were all feeling before Brock showed up. Ash and May were monstrous when it came to food, so he wasn't sure what they would have done without Brock. The chuckles subsided after a while, Brock leaning onto the rail and an idea beginning to from. Finally, when the idea sparked, he pulled away from the railing.

"You know, why don't I give you a few recipes then? They should be really helpful if you were planning to travel on your own," Brock suggested. They continued to stare out into the distance, the ocean calming both their excitement and anxiousness that would have entangled their minds. Ash took a moment to give that idea some thought, before he frowned, dismissing the suggestion.

"That would be really nice of you to do, but I don't think it would be the same. I don't know how to cook, so I'd probably just burn everything," Ash bashfully said, a little flustered from the confession. Pikachu laughed, knowing just how true that statement was. At that, another idea struck Brock.

"Why don't I just teach you then?" Brock wondered. Ash thought about that for a moment, said idea processing through his head. He grinned, excited.

"Well, I never actually thought about cooking anything. But I guess it wouldn't hurt. I'll take you up on that offer. Thank you!" They both shook hands, forming a tight grip like the bond they shared for so long. When they let go, they turned back to the railing, viewing the expanse of ocean and watching the waves crash. Both boy's grins widened at the sight of land.

They were that much closer to Pallet Town.

.

Strident were heard as Ash was way too excited to slow down his sprint to the familiar house. A huge grin was plastered over his face at the thought of seeing his mom and his pokemon.

"Ash, wait up!" Brock called out to him, out of breath in an attempt to keep up with him, to no avail. It was exhausting trying to catch up with Ash when he was this ecstatic. He was soon filled with relief, however, when he saw the Ketchum household come into view.

"Mom, I'm home!" Ash called from the front door. Pikachu immediately jumped off of Ash's shoulders, surveying the room in an attempt to find Delia. "Mom?" he called again. Ash turned around and noticed Brock trailing behind, stopping behind him and taking long exhales in order to gain his composer.

"What's wrong?" Brock asked, noticing the confused look on Ash and the fact Ash had stopped in his tracks. Ash frowned.

"I don't see my mom anywhere. I wonder where she is," Ash thought as he scratched the back of his head.

"Maybe we should check Professor Oak's Lab," Brock suggested. Ash nodded.

"Great idea, let's get going!" Ash exclaimed, running out the door. Brock sighed, trudging behind.

Once they reached the lab, Ash raised an eyebrow, wondering why it seemed so quiet here too.

"Hello?" Ash shouted, hoping someone would respond back. Thankfully, it didn't take long to get an answer.

"Well, if it isn't Ash and Brock! Hey, how's it going?" Tracey wondered, walking up to them with his marill in hand.

"Hey, Tracey!" Ash and Brock greeted. "How are you doing?"

"I'm great! The professor is upstairs with Delia, if you would like to see them," he explained. Ash nodded, a big smile forming as he began running up the stairs.

"Mom!" Ash greeted.

"Ash, you're finally home!" Delia said, walking up to give her son a hug. Ash hugged her back, thinking how great it was to be home and see his mom again.

"Hey there, Ash, Brock!" Professor Oak greeted.

"Hey, Professor Oak! How have my pokemon been doing?" Ash wondered.

"Your pokemon are doing great. They have been having a lot of fun, but they sure do miss you," Professor Oak explained, as he began taking them downstairs to the backyard where all the pokemon were at. "But how have you two been? How was your journey through Sinnoh?"

"It was awesome! We had a blast!"

"We watched you in the Sinnoh League, Honey. I was so proud of you!" Delia chimed in. Ash nodded, feeling glee at the thought.

"Thanks! Yeah, that was the best I've done! Fourth place is better than all the other times," Ash reasoned.

When they finally made it, Ash ran out, excited to see his pokemon.

He halted in his tracks, however, when he saw May kneeling in the backyard, feeding many of his pokemon and her own.

"M-May?" Ash stammered, her there completely unexpected. She never told him she was going to come to Pallet to visit.

May looked over, before standing up and smiling at the boy.

"Ash, it's great to see you! You too, Brock!" she said, her smile inviting. Ash walked closer, smiling at said girl. "It's been a while, huh?" Ash nodded.

"True, but I'm glad I can see you now. What are you doing here?" he asked, beaming at the girl.

"We'll talk about all the cool things that happened on our adventures later, alright? Right now, I think-" she was cut off when she saw all of Ash's pokemon tackle him to the ground. Her eyes had widened for a second, before she began to giggle, noticing Ash chuckling, their greetings of nuzzles and cuddles tickling him.

Yeah, it was great to be home.

.

They ended up finding themselves back in the Ketchum household, all of them awaiting a great home-cooked meal from Delia. As they waited, they all made sure to catch up, telling all kinds of stories about their journey.

"Ash, have you figured out where you're going next?" May asked. Ash frowned, shaking his head.

"I don't really know, actually." It was at that moment, Delia walked over, excited to hear that he hadn't decided yet, which meant he wouldn't be leaving so soon.

A mother could hope.

"That's great then, Sweetheart!" Delia interrupted. "That means you can go on a vacation to the Unova region with me, right? I've been planning it, but it would be a shame if I had to go alone," she explained. Ash thought for a moment, before eagerly agreeing.

"That would be really nice, actually! But where's the Unova region?" he asked. Delia smiled, clasping her hands together in victory. She was about to answer his question, when the bell in the kitchen rung, indicating that dinner was ready.

"I'll give you all the details after I take out the chicken from the oven," she said, walking out the living room and into the kitchen.

Ash grinned.

"Well, it looks like I'm going to Unova!" Ash declared.

"That's great, Ash! I'm actually planning to enter contest in the Sinnoh region," May announced. "What about you, Brock? Are you planning to follow Ash to Unova?" she wondered. Brock shook his head.

"Actually, I'm staying in Pewter City for a while, so I can become a doctor. I decided to stop by Pallet so I can teach Ash how to cook," Brock explained. May's eyes widened, incredulous at the thought.

"Ash… cook?" she asked, completely perplexed by the notion. Both boys nodded. "Well, that's a good idea. I know I've definitely been missing your food, Brock. Besides that, it's been burning a hole in my pocket with all the eating out I had to do while on my journey," May laughed. The others laughed as well.

"Hey, why don't you have Brock teach you with me?" Ash suggested. May's expression brightened at the idea.

"That would be awesome! I mean, if Brock doesn't mind-"

"Of course I don't mind." Brock smiled. "The more the merrier, you're welcomed to join!"

"Thanks so much! That will be beyond helpful!" May smiled.

.

"Cooking is an art, but also a science. You see, you find the beauty in the food with love and soul, while you experiment with different ingredients," Brock enlightened. Ash, May, and Pikachu sweat dropped at the older boy's antics. May leaned in, whispering to Ash and Pikachu.

"He's acting a little weird about this, don't you think?"

"Yeah, hehe," Ash agreed.

"Pika…"

"You must have inspiration and have a true passion for –"

"Urm, Brock? Do you think you can just show us what to do with these ingredients?" Ash asked, slumping over a little at Brocks demeanor. Brock moved closer, his eyes stern and peering at Ash, making Ash take a step back in fright.

"Do you think this is a game?" Brock asked seriously, his eyebrow twitching.

"Uuuuhhhh," both Ash and May said aloud, their own eyebrows twitching at Brocks change.

Brock sighed, conceding.

"Fine."

And so, Brock showed them how to prepare his special stew.

Brock smiled proudly at his handiwork. He effectively showed them all the ingredients needed to make all kinds of different meals. Both Ash and May drooled at the finished meals, hoping they would get the chance to try it all.

"So, these are all the ingredients. I showed you how to do it, now it's your turn!" Brock said. The two nodded, getting out of the stupor and wiping away their drool, and determined to try their hand at cooking.

Both grew frustrated, however, cooking not being easy at all.

May's hand shook as she carefully tried to cut potatoes for Brock's Special Stew, while Ash clumsily stirred the broth together.

"Ash, you're nudging me. Can you quit it?" May asked, growing irritated when he just kept doing it, like he himself didn't feel her. It made her even more worried about cutting the potatoes. She was handling a knife after all, she didn't want to cut a finger off!

"Sorry," he apologized. It was then that he accidentally leaned in too close to the flour, it causing a mess and making her fume.

"Ash! My shirt!" May exclaimed, anger in her tone.

"Sorry! You don't have to scream about it, it was only a small bit," Ash fought back.

"I wouldn't have to scream if you weren't so reckless and clumsy!" May shot back. She had the knife in her hand, shaking it with frustration. Cutting potatoes was a very delicate procedure!

"Am not!"

"Are too!"

Brock and Pikachu frowned, watching the back and forth between the two.

"Calm down you two," Brock tried, but he was only met with angry glares.

"We are calm!" they exclaimed in unison. Brock could only sigh.

"Okay, new plan. Let's try something easier. Why don't we move on to backing cookies for now?" Brock offered. Their anger immediately became forgotten, the idea of sweets way better and taking their minds off their argument.

.

"The trick of making cookies is to put the correct amount of ingredients in it. Also, with cookies, you want to stir, but not too much. It will give them a good texture once we bake them, alright? Why don't you two give it a shot?" Ash and May nodded, determined to prove their skills.

Ash smiled, starting to crack two eggs into the bowl.

"Ash, wait! That's not how it's supposed to go," May reprimanded. Ash raised an eyebrow.

"What are you talking about?"

"Brock put the flour in first, and then added the two eggs," she reminded. "We have to follow the steps."

"I thought he said it doesn't matter as long as it's in the right amount," Ash retorted, crossing his arms and glaring at the girl. May crossed her arms as well, glancing back at him with a similar upset look.

"Typical. You don't care how it's going to end up, do you? Obviously your carelessness is going to make our cookies really bad," she remarked, before getting back to her previous task. Ash peered, annoyed.

"I don't think you make will come out any better," Ash shot back.

"Pikapi, Pikachu!" Pikachu tried to reason, but failing miserably. They were too upset to listen to reason. Brock frowned, trying to meditate their argument, but with no luck either.

"Both of you, please calm down," he said.

"We are calm!" they both shouted at the same time once again. They turned their glowers towards each other.

"IF you think you're so good, Ash Ketchum, fine. Why don't we just see who the better cook is?" May dared.

"Is that a challenge?" Ash smirked while May could only roll her eyes. Figures that would be the only thing he cared about.

"Yes, the best cook wins," May said.

"I intend to." Ash smirked, and May growled, annoyed with his cocky attitude. The two ended up racing to the cabinets, while both Brock and Pikachu groaned helplessly, knowing this was going to be exhausting.

It was going to be a long day.

.

The rules were simple. They would bake cookies, and the one who made the best cookies would be crowned the champion of cooking – between the two, of course. Throughout the whole baking fiasco, Ash and May would make snide remarks on the other's behalf, egging them on even more. Brock and Pikachu could only watch, hoping they could make up soon. Really, they both hated it when they fought like this.

There was a tense silence between the two as they waited for the cookies to finish baking. They each found themselves looking at the other when they thought the other wasn't looking, occasionally meeting eye to eye on accident. When this would happen, they would stare wide eyed for a millisecond, before they glared, crossing their arms and turning the other direction. This would repeat until they both jumped when the soft ding of the bell occurred, indicating that the cookies were baked.

"They're ready!" May announced, excited to win. They both rushed to put mittens on before they took out their respective pans. "Brock is the taste tester." Brock sighed, wondering how he got himself in this mess. He stepped up, observing both of their baked goods. His hands moved over his chin, studying both cookies.

"Well, on appearance alone, May's cookies take it," Brock admitted. May stuck out her tongue in victory, cheering and gloating.

"Yeah, Ash's looks really gross!" May remarked smugly.

"Haha, very funny," Ash sarcastically mocked.

"Well, appearance is one thing, but taste is another," Brock explained. He picked up one of May's treats, taking one more look at it before he took a bite.

It wasn't long before he spit in out in disgust. Ash smirked, soon beginning to laugh at the outcome. May could only glare. "W-what was in that thing?" he asked in between heaving. May smiled regardless, taking out a magazine.

"Well, I had been reading in a magazine on the healthy foods this season! My mom was getting really mad at me because she was telling me that I need to eat healthier. So I thought I should use that as my muse! See, I added some spinach for strength, bits of asparagus for zest, and just a hint of egg plant for the zazz! I call them May's Cookie Surprsie!" May chirped. Ash nearly barfed in disgust at the ingredients. May glared.

"May, that sounds disgusting. I'm glad I didn't try any." May rolled up the magazine, before sticking her nose up, her face scrunching up in annoyance.

"And who asked for your opinion? It's not like you're going to eat my cooking anytime soon anyways," May reasoned, crossing her arms. She paused for a moment, her words sinking in. Her face immediately heated at her words, wondering why she would say anytime soon. Eh?

"It may look nice, but it's not too good. Sorry, May," Brock apologized. Brock inwardly thought, Rule No. 1: Follow the ingredients. "Now, let's try Ash's," he started, picking up one of Ash's treats from the pan. He put one in his mouth, before he cringed, his tongue tasting the saltiness of the usually sweet treat.

"Too… much… salt," Brock crocked, pleading for water. Pikachu handed the poor boy a cup of water as he gulped it down. Ash's eyes widened, wondering how that happened.

"What? But I followed a recipe!" Ash exclaimed! May took a look at the paper he was referring to, before she began to laugh.

"It says two teaspoons, not twenty!" she teased, continuing to giggle at his mistake. Ash grimaced. It was then Brock thought, Rule No. 2: Measure carefully… and actually read the measurements carefully…

"I can't crown either of you the winners. Sorry, you both lose."

Ash and May looked at their respective cookies, wondering how both of them could have lost.

"It can't be that bad," Ash tried to reason, grabbing a cookie from his pan.

"Something that looks this good can't taste bad," May figured, taking a cookie from her pan. It was then that both tried their own baked good. After a few seconds however, both spit it out, disgusted.

"Maybe… Brock was right," Ash choked out, May only able to nod in agreement.

Both Ash and May were thankful that they had such ravenous pokemon like Snorlax and Munchlax. Their batch of cookies would have gone to waste otherwise.

"Looks like Munchlax and Snorlax really liked them at least," Ash laughed. May nodded, smiling in agreement.

"At least we know those two will eat our trial meals," May said, beginning to laugh along with Ash.

There was an awkward silence after a while, both having trouble saying what they were feeling.

"Hey, May? Let's try baking again, alright? No competition this time?" he wondered. May smiled happily, not wanting to give up.

"Absolutely!"

.

When Brock came into the kitchen, he was surprised that the two were at it again, more determined than ever. However, he was happy to note that the atmosphere was completely different now from earlier today.

"You two baking a second batch?" Brock asked, a little scared to ask?"

"Yup!" they both said, their voices both holding eagerness at the prospect. Brock stopped for a moment to observe them, noticing they were both different, now concentrating and taking this more seriously. There was no more arguments, which he was happy to see.

"Hey, why don't the two of you work together? Two heads are better than one, after all," Brock suggested. Both Ash and May paused their actions, before they looked at each other's face to read each other. After a few seconds, the two smiled at the other before they turned to Brock.

"Yeah, we can do that." Both put their aprons on once again and went to work.

This time, together.

Brock and Pikachu were happy to see the difference with them. Before, they would fight tooth and nail over every little thing, which got so tiring. However, now, there were periods of silence as both worked together spreading and kneading the dough.

"You know, I think this batch of cookies will taste really good," May thought out loud. Ash took a moment to look at her, before he smiled.

"You bet. As long as we work together, I'm sure it will taste amazing," Ash reasoned. May agreed, wiping away a bead of sweat with her forearm before she put her back into kneading the dough.

Ash glanced over to May, when something caught his eye. He began to chuckle. May paused her ministrations, realizing Ash was laughing her way. She grew shy, a deep blush forming over her cheeks, feeling insecure.

"W-what's so funny?" Ash took a moment to point to his own nose.

"You've got some flour on your nose," Ash laughed. May tried to look, converging her eyes so she could try to look at the tip of her nose. She sighed, however, only managing to cross her eyes at that point. Ash sighed, before moving closer to said girl. Her blush deepened, wondering why he was suddenly so close to her.

He tried his best to help her, wiping his finger over her nose.

"Oops," Ash began to laugh even more.

"What?" May demanded, affronted by his deep chuckles.

"I think I made a bigger mess on your nose," he managed between laughter.

"Not funny!" she yelled, her fist clenched, but Ash continued to laugh. She glared, before she smirked, deciding it was time Ash got what was coming to him. She decided to fling flower and powder his face, making his laughs stop immediately.

"Oops," May said innocently. Ash grew irritated, making a face.

"Hey!" This time, May was the one giggling.

"That's what you get for laughing at me!" she said. He soon smirked himself, flinging more flour towards her, while she ended up doing the same in retaliation. They continued to fling and throw flower until Ash decided to grab a handful of left over dough and threw it at her. May gasped, attempting to grab some from the bowl and throwing some right in his face.

The end of their food fight resulted in scattered flour all over the floor and their bodies, laughter, and a big mess. They found themselves laughing on the floor. Their stomachs hurt so much, yet they couldn't stop laughing at the scene. As their laughter subsided, the silence and awkwardness began to replace the previous playful atmosphere.

"Hey, Ash?" May began.

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry for getting mad earlier," May apologized. Ash smiled.

"Hey, it's alright, don't worry. I'm sorry too. You were right earlier, and I shouldn't have gotten mad either," he apologized too. Just then, Delia walked into the kitchen. She gasped, her eyes wide and astounded by the mess created in her beautiful kitchen! She grew angry, her hands on her hips as she accusingly looked at her son.

"Ash Ketchum, you better clean up this mess this instant!" she scolded.

"Aww man. Sorry, mom," Ash said guilty. May offered an apologetic smile.

"We can clean while our cookies are in the oven," May suggested, while Ash nodded, liking this plan.

.

"Okay, all clean!" Ash exclaimed, getting up from scrubbing the last bits of flour from the floor. Just then, the bell rang, indicating that the cookies were ready. May grinned.

"Right on time too!" May exclaimed, wiping the bead of seat off her forehead. They both grabbed mittens once more, taking out the batch. It was then, they decided to wait until the cookies cooled before they grabbed one, taking a big bite and praying it tasted good.

"Hey, it's pretty good!" Ash said whilst chewing, soon taking more bites of the sweet.

"It just melts in the mouth!" May savored it, loving how soft the texture was. They then took the cookies out of the pan and into a plate, ready to present the cookies to both Brock and Pikachu, who were waiting in the living room. Brock and Pikachu were smart this time, knowing they didn't want to be there in case an argument arose. However, they were pleasantly surprised when Ash and May brought the batch of cookies to them together.

"Pika?" Pikachu questioned. What surprised them most was the fact that they were both covered in cookie batter and flour.

"Brock, I think you'll really like this batch! You too, Pikachu!" Ash was sure, excited to see their faces when they tried this batch. Brock was reluctant at first, but ended up taking one anyways (Pikachu too).

This was true friendship.

His expression changed from fear, to delight when the flavor hit his mouth.

"Pika!" Pikachu said excitedly.

"Hey, not bad!" The trainer and the coordinator cheered, happy with their work. "You two work really well together," Brock complimented. They both thanked Brock.

"Hey, I think we're both getting the hang of this, don't you think? Let's cook some more!" Ash said, glancing at May and hoping she said yes. May winked then, her face heating at the thought.

"Great idea! Hey, why don't we cook a dinner for everyone?" May suggested. Ash nodded, liking that idea.

"Alright!" they both said in unison, ready to prepare their next meal.

Brock smiled.

"I can't wait to try it." However, he noticed both yawn, rubbing their eyes. They must have been tired. They put in a lot of work on those cookies, after all.

"You two look beat, why don't you guys rest up for a bit instead? You can make dinner tomorrow?" he offered, before the two nodded, thankful.

"I am beat," Ash rationalized, stretching his arms and yawning once more. "Who knew cooking could take so much out of you?" May agreed.

"Wait a sec… I really need a shower," she remembered, looking down and realizing all the flour that was all over her skin.

"You're right. Same." The two ended up looking at each other, giving a blank stare before they began to laugh. Brock couldn't help but join in.

.

The next day, Ash and May were both energized and ready to prepare the best dinner ever. There were no arguments this time around as Pikachu watched intently. Pikachu was so happy, observing the two work together as they should. They were both motivated to make something amazing for their friends and family.

Brock, Tracey, Professor Oak, all cheered when they saw the two amateur chefs stagger out the kitchen, holding the large pot filled with steaming stew on both sides.

"Wow, it smells great," Professor Oak praised.

"Eat up, everybody!" Ash said. "We worked together to make Brock's Special Stew for everyone to enjoy!" Both grinned excitedly at the happy faces that came into view when they presented the pot on the table.

They both gave each other a tender smile and a quick glance, smiling at a job well done.

.

"I think you two will be fine during your journey! You guys can cook so well now, I'm very proud! As long as you do what I taught you, and you take what you learned on your travels, you'll both be fine," Brock complimented. He fisted the straps of his backpack, staring back at both of them. "Ash, have a fun vacation in Unova. And May, good luck with your contest in Sinnoh!"

"Thanks so much for all your help, Brock!" May thanked.

"Yeah, you really did us a huge favor! We won't let you down! You'll become an amazing doctor, I just know it!" Ash said in farewell, his fist in the air. With that, Brock waved goodbye, walking on the path to Pewter City.

They both waited until Brock was unable to be seen, reminiscing about their time with their dear friend, before they turned towards the other. May poignantly smiled, knowing this was inevitable, but knowing their separation would be for too long.

"Well, I guess this is goodbye," May said, her hands behind her. Ash nodded, smiling from ear to ear.

"Yeah. May, good luck with your contest in Sinnoh," Ash said. May smiled warmly.

"You too. Good luck with your gym battles," May said. "Good bye, Pikachu." Pikachu smiled, knowing this wouldn't be the last time they saw each other. May waved goodbye, before walking the opposite direction. Ash turned away from her, frowning at the thought, wondering why this time felt more painful than the others.

May walked off, wondering the same, her heart aching at their farewell. It was then, she jumped, hearing Ash's boisterous voice call out to her.

"And May! Good luck trying to make any good food without me!" Ash called, hoping they can end on a happy note, and this painful feeling would leave. May stopped for a second, turning around and completely flustered by his words.

"Ash Ketchum, you better take that back!" May shouted back, embarrassed, but still happy and laughing at his words. She crossed her arms. "You weren't so good without me," May added smugly. Ash smiled, happy for the change.

He'd rather their departure from each other be a happy one.

"We'll just see about that! Oh, and be sure to come and visit, alright?" Ash called out, waving his arm vigorously.

"Yeah, I'll be sure too!" May called back, waving goodbye as she continued to walk off. A deep blush formed, excited for the next time they'll see each other again.

They both walked in opposite directions on different paths. However, they were excited too, positive they would see each other again.

Ash smirked, before he added, "Oh, and May? Please, don't ever make May's Cookie Surprise again! Ever!" He laughed again when she fumed.

"Not funny, Ash Ketchum!"
