Title: "The Real Thing"

Summary: Steve questions Kono's preference for Wilcox over Estrada.

Notes: So, this idea popped into my head and I had to write it.

"So, you like Wilcox?" Steve asked Kono, his low voice breaking the quiet that had settled over the soft sound of the TV.

The two were sitting in the break room at Five-0 Headquarters, still watching the CHiPs marathon on TV. They had run low on snacks and drinks, and after using the time-honored system of "rock, paper, scissors," it had fallen to Danny to make the trip to the store. Chin had dozed off in his chair after his third hour into the marathon, leaving Steve and Kono the only two Five-0 members still present and alert.

Kono didn't bother to take her eyes off the screen as she answered. "Sure. Like I said, he's hot."

"But not as hot as Estrada, right?" he pressed.

She turned to him now, an incredulous grin slowly spreading across her face. "I don't know. Why?"

"Nothing, it's just…Danny and I have been arguing all day over which of us was most like Estrada. He said it should be him because I call him 'Danno' and, in his own opinion, he has a way with the ladies. I said it should be me because I have dark hair, I'm a badass, and the ladies love me."

Kono couldn't quite smother her laugh at the way McGarrett said those last two self-attributed qualities so matter-of-factly. When he stared at her in surprise, however, she hurried to continue the conversation.

"And you have a nickname too," she pointed out. "'Boss.'"

"There you go," he said with a nod. "So, when you said you liked the blond one, it put a hole in my theory, and I was kind of…"

"Disappointed?"

"Well… yeah," he admitted, crossing his arms over his chest.

Kono smiled at him. "It's just a TV show," she said lightly. In a lower voice, she added, giving him a onceover, "It doesn't compare to the real thing."

A lopsided grin broke out on McGarrett's face, and he leaned back in his chair, content to continue watching the marathon again.

The young woman studied his profile for a moment longer before footsteps, the rustle of a bag being opened, and the crunching of chips heralded Danny's return from the store. By the time Williams entered the break room, tossing his snacks onto the table, and startling Chin awake in the process, Kono had her eyes trained on the TV again.

After throwing an apologetic smile at the bleary-eyed Kelly, Danny set a six-pack of soda down on the table and turned to his partner and the rookie cop.

"What'd I miss?"

"Not much," they replied in unison.

Danny groaned. "Now you're talking at the same time? You guys gotta be dating!"

The targets of his grumbling only smiled.
