Dean didn't know what had possessed him to pick up the kitten he'd heard meowing outside that abandoned warehouse in Van Nuys, especially since it was very likely that he would be going into battle. But pick up the small fluffy multicolored kitten he did.
Inside the "beautiful room" that would have been better suited for a mansion or a museum rather than a run down factory or whatever, Zachariah was monologuing about Dean's useless rebellion and how pointless it had been.
"I didn't just do it for the people." Dean said as he pulled out the slightly battered and very shaken kitten he'd nearly forgotten about until it had piddled in his coat pocket.
"Look at him. Can you honestly say that you want to destroy him? He's so cute and helpless." Dean asked as he held out the tiny kitten so its little wide green eyes were staring into Zachariah's.
"Yes." Zachariah said without hesitation.
Elsewhere however, another angel paused.
Long ago, in the early days of creation, before Lucifer had rebelled, Father had gathered all of his angels to him and asked them to draw one thing that they wanted him to create.
Little Michael sat amongst his Archangel brothers carefully thinking about what he wanted. Lucifer was already drawing a brightly colored blue/green bird with a wide fan of tail feathers. Raphael was drawing some sort of plant. Gabriel was drawing an odd looking furry animal with webbed feet and a beak below a note that says "It lays eggs.". Eventually inspiration came to him. He drew a creature that was similar to the newly created lions but much much smaller and more colorful.
After he was finished drawing, he handed in his picture as well as the others his brothers had drawn.
A while later, he wandered through creation. He easily found Lucifer's bird, Raphael's flower, and Gabriel's whatever the hell that was, he however did not find his creature. Sure, he found a wild creature that looked rather similar, but he did not find his creature.
There it was however, clutched in his vessel's hands. Unlike the creature he found in the beginning, and the number of close looking descendants it had produced, this one was exactly how he had pictured it. There his creature was, complete with the faint tiger stripes in the orange patches, and the tiny flecks of gold in the grass green eyes.
His father had not forgotten.
The kitten was put back in his vessel's pocket an instant before a fight between his vessel and Zachariah broke out.
He raced over, but the fight ended all too soon. Zachariah lay dead, and his vessel had withdrawn his permission and fled. There was however another of the correct bloodline left in the room when he arrived...
&!&!&
As soon as the door could open, Sam and Dean raced back into the room. It was empty, and looked more like the sort of room you would find in an abandoned factory or warehouse, complete with mangled venetian blinds. Adam was gone. Michael had obviously taken him.
Dejected and angry, Sam and Dean searched the entire warehouse in the vain hope of finding Adam. After a few minutes, they left vowing to get Adam back.
As soon as they stepped outside, they found themselves facing Adam. Something about him was different however. The look in his eyes was more reminiscent of Castiel around the time they had first met, rather than that of their half-brother.
"I'll help you save the world or whatever, just give me the cat." Adam said without preamble, pointing to Dean's pocket when he made his demand for the cat.
Dean pulled the rather shell shocked and slightly smothered kitten out of his pocket and held it out to Adam. Adam snatched it out of his hands, and cradled it close to him. An instant later, the kitten was in perfect health.
"There you are Patches, I looked everywhere for you." Michael cooed as he smoothed down the kitten's ruffled fur.
