Father Figure

"You were as close to a son as I ever had."

"No. I'm nothing like you." Revulsion twists Neal's stomach into knots. And you are NOTHING like my father, he thinks, in a cold rage.

It isn't until much later that he realizes that, in many ways, Adler was like Caffrey Sr., the crooked cop. And it isn't until then—when his thoughts aren't distorted by fury and anguish, when he can think straight—that he suddenly realizes whose image flashed into his mind when Adler started talking about fathers and sons.

And it wasn't his biological father at all.
