This is a conversation I imagined Booth and Brennan having in her apartment sitting on the couch while Booth does paperwork and she just kind of watches him or something.

Disclaimer: I wish I had something awesome to do with Bones, but I don't...

The Foot in the Plans

"What are you doing?"

She looked up to find Booth staring at her intently while tapping his pen in one hand and smiled a little.

"I'm contemplating how I feel," she told him. She drew a breath in and released it in a puff that made her hair twitch. "I find that I have been doing that a lot lately."

"How you feel as in hungry or tired?" he asked.

"As in pregnant, uncomfortable, and nervous," she said matter-of-factly.

"Really, you're nervous? Why?" He seemed very perplexed. He abandoned his paperwork and pen on the coffee table, settling his elbows on his knees.

She considered how to phrase her response without sounding like she had been overtaken by hormones at last. She stared at her feet resting in Booth's lap while she thought. "The idea of birthing a baby is not an issue. I also know that between the two of us, we are certain to raise a well-adjusted child. I think I'm nervous about how our lives will change," she admitted. "Angela has assured me that this will be a very good change, but I can't seem to relax about it, especially since I am two weeks away from my due date."

Booth sat back on the couch with his hands resting on her swollen ankles and considered his own answer.

"Angela is right, Bones," he said finally. "We're still the same people we were five years ago, the only thing that's changing is that now we'll have a baby to take care of."

"She once told me that you and I had always been in a relationship but we just weren't having sex," she pointed out to help convince herself.

"I'm starting to wonder what you guys talk about when I'm not around," he joked.

"In the last few months we've talked more about baby things than about you," she told him with a smile.

"That's how the next months of your life are gonna be, Bones. You'll be talking about diapers and spit up before you know it."

"Will we ever go back to how we were before?" she asked honestly.

"We won't ever be different people. There just won't be enough time to be like this after the baby comes. Eighteen years from now we'll be able to be like this all the time because our kid'll be in college."

"I can accept that," she stated. They continued to sit quietly on the couch for a bit, her sideways with her bare feet being kneaded by Booth's fingers. After a while she pulled one of his hands away from her ankle and held it under hers over the protrusion that was their baby.

"Even though this is not how I imagined my life would be, I find that I'm very happy with how it turned out," she said, watching as one side of Booth's mouth quirked upwards with the baby's kick.

"I love you, too, Bones," he told her. "Is that a foot?"

"Yes. When she stretches you can see the shape of the foot." She let go of his hand and smoothed her shirt against her belly to show him.

"That is so weird," he murmured in complete fascination.
