Who You're Fighting For
Neville was running as fast as he could while dodging hexes as they shot past him in dangerous beams of light. He leapt over a pile of crumbled stone while shooting a disarming spell to his left. He was unstoppable. He was invincible. He had to find her before this confidence melted away. He had to find Luna.
He spotted long blonde hair and a faded purple knit sweater and ran faster. Luna was standing by a wall of paintings, speaking with them and updating them on the battle while casting protective charms on their frames.
"LUNA!" he shouted. The girl turned around and he was met with wide grey eyes and sincere smile.
"Neville, what a pleasant surpr-"
And then they were kissing. Neville could vaguely distinguish the wolf whistles, gasps, and sparse clapping (courtesy of the paintings) but all he could really focus on was Luna.
She was in his arms, flat against him, chin tilted up to give him better access. Her enormous, thoughtful eyes were closed and she was smiling against his mouth. They slowly broke away, but he still held her tenderly like she was the most precious thing to him. After all, she was. She leaned her head against his chest as if to listen to his heartbeat, and he lightly kissed the top of her head as if to bless her. Her light hair was streaked with dust and bits of dirt and there were scratches on her face but he only thought that she was beautiful as ever and that he'd get back at whoever tried to hurt her. She murmured something against his sweater that sounded a lot like took you long enough and his grin stretched even wider.
"There's a bloody war going on and I'm still not protected!" a painting screeched and Luna gently untangled herself from their embrace to go back to her previous task. Neville hesitated to leave and only did so after she tucked her necklace into his pocket and gave him one last, hope-filled parting kiss.
"Be careful. We can't lose each other." she said quietly. He nodded and squeezed her hand once before running back to the battle grounds. He felt a renewed strength surging through his blood now that he knew who he was fighting for.
Besides, he had a snake to kill.
