Mutant and Proud

Chapter 28: Level Five Clearance

Laura's P.O.V

I woke with Charles' arms still protectively wrapped around me; the memory of last night's nightmare still clear in my mind. Something made me think that memories of Erik's speeches hadn't been the cause of that nightmare, there was just something about it something that made me feel complete and utter dread. Combined with this odd dream, Jean had also been woken by a terrible nightmare, something was clearly wrong or something was about to happen and it wasn't good.

"Something happened last night." Hank started as both Charles and I made our way downstairs to get some breakfast.

"What do you mean?" I asked as I began to put some bread in the toaster, Hank sat down at the table with Charles to his right as I sat down opposite. I made the plates and other utensils come over to the table, pouring everyone some coffee.

"In Cairo, some sort of earthquake." He added as he added milk to his coffee. An earthquake wasn't anything special, what did that have to do with anything?

"Something to worry about?" Charles asked just as the toaster pinged, I brought over everyone's slices to their plates.

"Possibly, we made need to check it out."

"With Cerebro?" I asked Hank nodded at least Charles now had a better grasp on his powers and this wouldn't hurt him in anyway. Hopefully nothing nefarious was happening, hopefully it was just an earthquake.

"The source came from Cairo, I'll put in the coordinates." Hank stated as he walked over to Cerebro's central control panel, Charles and I followed behind him. He handed over the helmet to Charles and then he began searching, in a short amount of time he came across something.

"What? What is it?" Hank asked as Charles began to smile slightly and ever so slightly tears were brought to his eyes.

"It's her." He came back with and immediately I knew who he was talking about, Moira McTaggert. The woman who had helped us all those years ago, who he had had to wipe the mind of to protect all of us mutants.

"Who?"

"Moira."

"Moira McTaggert? Give me the details." Hank said grabbing a pad and pen to write down everything. Maybe this earthquake was a lot more serious than I had first thought when Hank had first brought it up. What was the CIA doing in Cairo? And why send McTaggert?

"She looks good, hasn't aged a day."

"Charles, we don't need to know that she hasn't aged a day and that she's still looking good." I replied slightly nudging him in the right shoulder, even though he never really said anything about it, wiping her mind had really affected him.

"No tell me why the CIA is there." Hank mumbled as he shook his head at what Charles had said.

"She's going back to Langley." He replied taking off the Cerebro helmet, hopefully it was just some routine mission to Cairo and nothing important. "I'm going to go there see if she knows anything about the tremor."

"Do you think that is a good idea?" I asked opening this link with Moira may not be a good idea, it could hurt Charles or it could be bad for the students at the Academy if the CIA found out they were all mutants.

"Of course."

"You want to go see Moira?"

"I want to check her out, check out the situation." He said correcting himself after the small slip.

"I'm sure you want to check out the situation, Charles." I joked knowing full well he would go see her given any small chance. "Well I'm sure she'll be happy to see you."

"I swear I am just checking on the situation in Cairo, it could be linked to Jean and your nightmares."

"Let's hope it simply is an earthquake tremor and nothing more." I replied hoping that this really had nothing to do with the nightmares last night. "Be safe."

Charles' P.O.V

Alex and I had made it to the Langley offices and I was gearing myself up to see Moira for the first time in person in years. Hank and Laura had remained at the school to oversea the day to day running, they'd notify me if anything was completely wrong and we would immediately return home.

"You really haven't seen her in all these years? You never looked her up not even in Cerebro?" Alex asked as we progressed up the hallway towards Moira's office at the end of the hall.

"What do you take me for some kind of pervert?" I answered but the real answer was yes, I had looked her up in Cerebro, just shortly after the events on the beach in Cuba all those years ago when I was lonely after everyone had left me. "Yeah I looked her up once, twice but not in a long time alright."

"How'd you leave things? Any hard feeling?" he asked as we entered the first office were all of her staff were working on all sorts of things.

"Everybody take a break." I said and then everyone was paused while Alex and I made our way to the back room where Moira was. "I wiped her mind all memories of us, the beach, Cuba, I felt it was the best thing for her."

"And for you?" he questioned it wasn't a decision I had taken lightly, I didn't want to do it, I didn't want to lose yet another person in my life, but for the safety of every mutant it had to be done.

"Didn't really matter what was best for me." I mumbled before I opened the door putting on my best smile. "Moira McTaggert, allow me to introduce myself I'm Professor…"

"Charles Xavier, I know exactly who you are." She finished I looked up at Alex who looked as shocked as I did. Had the memory wipe not worked? For all these years had she actually remembered everything?

"You do?"

"Of course, I do, I read all of your papers pleasure to finally meet you." She answered shaking my hand, I was so relieved to hear that, everything I had done had worked. She then shook Alex's hand too. "Moira McTaggert."

"Alex Summers."

"Have a seat just throw that on the floor." She said gesturing to the book of files on the seat to my left, which Alex picked up and placed down on the floor.

"It's wonderful to see you, meet you again, for the first time." I was tripping all over my words feeling Alex's eyes roll at my antics, that's when my eyes were drawn to the photos behind Moira of a little boy. "You've got a son?"

"Yes."

"Does he have a husband? Do you have a husband?" why was I so nervous? Why was I tripping over all my words?

"I had a husband." She began and I tried not to smile to much, because the glee on my face would be somewhat bizarre to her. "But it's hard to do this job and have a family life."

"Very good."

"We all make choices."

"Yes, we do."

"Professor." Alex interjected trying to get the conversation back on track.

"Yes? Yes, I was, we were hoping you would tell us what happened yesterday in Egypt." I asked the look on Moira's face as I finished the question told me she wasn't about to give out this information just so easily to us.

"I'm afraid that's classified information and I don't mean to be rude but how did you get in here?" she answered if I weren't so quick to think of this prior to coming into this room we would no doubt be in a holding cell in the next couple of minutes.

"I have level five clearance."

"Ever since the world found out about mutants in '73, there have been calls some see them as some kind of second coming, usually a sign of god I was tracking one of them." She began to explain opening up a file and showing Alex and I the photos and information that was inside. "The world's first mutant."

"I thought mutants didn't evolve until this century." Alex questioned everyone believed the first genesis of mutants was only in the last century, pertaining to certain events leading to the mutation in DNA. But there had always been the argument that the X-gene was always present since the dawn of man, it was only just now that people began questioning everyone's mutations.

"That's the common theory, but these guys think the first mutant was born tens of thousands of years ago." She continued explaining showing us more and more imagines, pausing on a picture of a hieroglyph. "And they believe he will rise again; they've been searching ancient sites all around the world looking for clues. These hieroglyphs talk about a certain set of powers only one man can possess."

"They think he lived all this time?" I asked I know Laura had been brought back from the dead, but we had all put that down to the timeline abnormality of Logan coming back to change the future which had somehow brought her back. I had never heard of a mutant living for thousands of years.

"Yes and no. They believe he has the ability to transfer his consciousness from body to body." She continued explaining, well that would explain why we hadn't heard of some decrepit mutant roaming the Earth. "Some of these may have been other mutants allowing him to take on their powers and amassing them. And wherever this being was he always had four principal followers, disciples, those he would imbue with powers."

"Like the four horse men of the apocalypse?" Alex asked before smirking and adding, "You can get that one from the Bible."

"Or the Bible got it from him?" Moira added of course talk of this being sounded like it had been going thousand of years at some point it may have been incorporated to the Bible. " And wherever he ruled it always ended in disaster, cataclysm some kind of apocalypse."

"Apocalypse…Laura." I mumbled maybe this was linked to Laura and Jean's nightmares last night. Maybe there was an apocalypse coming and they had seen it before we even knew anything bad was happening. "We need to get back home."

Laura's P.O.V

"Jean, how are you today?" I asked as found her sat in one of the many windows overlooking the gardens at the back of the mansion. Others had been rather afraid of her since she had joined the Academy meaning she was on her own a lot of the time. But her luck may be changing shortly with the arrival of Alex's brother, Scott, who was sat a couple of windows away from her not so sneakily observing her. "I hope you managed to get some sleep last night."

"Eventually, yes I did thank you." She replied a small smile on her face, I returned the smile and looked out of the window observing what she had been looking at. Other students were happily laughing and talking over lunch.

"I wouldn't worry, nightmares come to us all every now and then." I answered returning my attention back to Jean who nodded along but I knew she didn't really believe what I was saying. "Hopefully there won't be any tonight. Well I best carry on, there's always something going on around here."

"Thank you." She said smiling, as my gaze fell back to the window, I was greeted with utterly terrifying sight of dark black clouds surrounding the bloody figure of my grandfather.

"Laura!" I couldn't move, this wasn't real. What was I seeing? Grandpa was still alive and well and back home in Oxford. "Beware of Apocalypse." And then the vision disappeared and the scene returned to the students happily having lunch outside.

"Laura?" a voice asked but I my body was already leaving the hallway to grab my stuff. There was something definitely wrong, there was something wrong at home and I needed to get back to Oxford. "Laura, stop!"

"I need to get to Oxford! Something is seriously wrong, something has happened!"
