This is an Idea I had for a while now and I decided to write it. Many of you may notice some similarities in this story that connect with my other stories, but I intend to do so. See, I wanted to restart my writing career on fanfiction; so I figured this was the story to do so. Anyways, this story is going to be really different and thought out more. But if you have read my work before I will have to tell you that I will not update as constantly as I normally do. Hope you enjoy and here is the first part of the story.

Here are the Ages: Aang: 15, Katara: 16, Sokka: 17 and you can probably figure out the rest.

Note: This is just the prologue! The story focuses on Aang and Katara. This is just a new prologue that actually fits to the real plot of my story.

Prologue:
The Air Nomad

A young ten-year-old airbender by the name of Sojin walked through the halls of the Southern Air Temple. He was a simple monk - he wore the traditional Air Nomad training uniform with a smooth bald head. Considering he was still in training and had yet to master the thirty-six tiers of airbending required to become master he hadn't yet become eligible for his tattoos. He was going to visit a friend - a friend who had been recently been told of his identity of being the Avatar and recently discovered that he was to be moved to the Western Air Temple to complete his airbending training.

He walked down the hall and knocked on a single wooden door, "Aang, it's me Sojin. Are you feeling any better?" the boy asked. His voice was a bit squeaky but it was possibly just because of his age. His voice was full of sympathy for his friend, who had already become a master just a few months ago.

"No," a voice answered from the other side of the door, muffled slightly, "now please leave me alone..." Aang said, his voice full of hurt and sadness.

Sojin sighed and simply opened the door, "Aang, come on. You can't just lie in here forever. Come on, why don't you try and show me that Air Scooter move you made up!" Sojin said to his friend. Aang was lying on his bed with his face buried in the dark grassy-green pillow.

Sojin took a shallow breath before approaching his friend. The airbender took a seat on the edge of the bed and placed a hand on the young master's back, "Aang... you can't stay in here forever. What ever happened to the happy fun-loving monk we all know and love?"

Aang brought his head out of the pillow with a soft smile. His eyes were filled with un-shed tears and he wiped them away, "How about a game of Air Ball?" he asked.

Sojin smiled, "Now that's the Aang I know!" he cried out, then began running out of the room, "I'll race ya!"

Aang smiled a devious smile and got up off the bed, using his airbending to catch up with the younger airbender. Sojin turned and saw Aang which caused him to make a shocked face.

"I'll always be faster. Remember that, Sojin," Aang told the airbender as he began running faster.

Sojin looked to his left and there was a balcony where Gyatso normally made his cakes, "Enough racing! Let's fly!" Sojin cried out as he took out his glider and jumped off the balcony, using his airbending to quickly open the glider and cling on to it.

Aang did the same and was now flying just next to Sojin, "A few loops?" Aang said as he had already begun using the air currents around him to pull up and do a loop before flying straight once more. Sojin had done the same, but had flipped over Aang and was practically lying on his back as the glider flew above Aang's.

Aang looked up and scoffed, "Show off..."

Sojin let out a loud laugh as he flipped back over. They continued to fly until they reached the Air Ball Arena; which was to their surprise just waiting for someone to start a game.

Aang was shot through the goal as he practically slammed into the stone cliff behind the arena. He groaned softly as he began hearing the obnoxious laughter of his friend Sojin. He looked up where Sojin was standing on top of the goal with his fists on his waist and smiling arrogantly.

"I always beat you at air ball! How does a simple airbender like me beat the 'all-powerful Avatar?'" he said boastfully.

Aang was now wiping the dirt from his shirt, "'Cause I always let you win..." the monk responded, avoiding eye contact.

Sojin made a face of disapproval, "Then why don't you try to actually win this time. I already have five points and all you got is one; thanks to the cake..." he looked up at the mountain to his left, "...that someone threw at me!" he practically shouted.

Aang chuckled softly at this as he pretended to wipe some dirt off his back when he was really forming a ball of air.

"So, you up for round seven?" Sojin asked, ready to cream Aang once more.

Aang smiled deviously, "I got a better idea..." he said and with that he launched the ball of air at Sojin who was then launched a few feet back until he had grabbed the top of one of the poles and sat crouched upon it.

He sighed in relief and looked up at Aang, "That was totally unfair!" he stated with aggravation.

Aang continued to smile deviously as he practically floated across the field with his air scooter, "I've never been a fair player," he stated boastfully.

Out of nowhere one of the monks approached the field. As with all the other elder monks, he had a shaved head and his airbending tattoos. He had a long, thinly cut brown mustache and the usual robes.

He eyed the two fun loving benders with disapproval, "Sojin, come!" the monk demanded, "It is time to test your agility."

Sojin groaned, "Come on, Afiko. I've been working on agility for three months now and all the other monks said-"

"I don't care what the other elder monks have told you!" Monk Afiko growled, "I am your mentor and guardian and you will do as I say. Now come!"

Sojin was about to do as he was told then Aang leaped over to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. He cast his friend a light smile before turning to Afiko.

"I mean no disrespect, Monk Afiko, but Sojin has been training almost nonstop for the past few weeks. Can't he at least have some fun once in a while?"

Afiko eyed the Avatar angrily then quirked his lip up, "Fun? Fun, you say?" Afiko snorted, "I'd like to see you protect the world with fun, Avatar Aang."

Aang wasn't fond of people addressing him as the Avatar. It made him feel out of place and many of his friends had avoided him because of his identity. He broke his eye contact with Afiko and the monk smiled; knowing that he had won the small argument.

He motioned for Sojin to come, "Now, Sojin," the monk demanded, now turning away from the Air Ball Arena and walking away. Sojin sighed in disappointment and leaped down from the arena, closely following behind his mentor.

He looked back at Aang who seemed to be slumping and now sitting on one of the poles; looking down at the ground.

Sojin soon looked away and continued to follow his mentor to their training facility.

Three Weeks Later...

Sojin lied on his stomach with his chin resting on the pillow on the bed of his room. His arms were crossed out in front of him while he just lied there. Droplets of water dripped down his cheek and onto the pillow as he thought about his friend Aang.

It had been about three weeks since Aang had left during the huge storm that had ravaged their trees and their plants. The temple was scattered with remnants of the storm, but Sojin didn't care about that. He had last seen Aang at the Air Ball Arena right when his mentor Afiko had pulled him away from the young master. He had heard that only hours later Aang had run away. Gyatso had found a letter in Aang's room that night during the storm and soon the entire temple learned that Aang, the Avatar, had run away. They knew that anyone flying out in such devastating whether would encounter much trouble and conflict with the water and wind. They had sent a failed search party after Aang. They found no trace of Aang except a few mangoes floating in the sea.

Sojin deeply missed his friend and had been depressed. Aang had been his best friend and many of the other monks shared the same relationship. A part of Sojin told him that this was all Afiko's fault. It was just after Afiko addressed Aang as the Avatar that he had disappeared. He hadn't spoken to his mentor since and refused to talk to him.

The moon shined out in the sky and its beam of light shined through Sojin's window when suddenly he noticed a change in color from the sky. From the corner of his eye it looked red; like some kind of fire ball. He suddenly heard an explosion and he felt the room begin to shake. Vases sitting atop dressers and tables fell and smashed to the floor.

The room was now tinted with red; along with the sky and everything outside.

Sojin quickly got on his feet as he heard another explosion along with a child's terror-filled scream. He rushed to the window and poked his head out; looking around for the source of the explosion. He scanned the area before he saw a number of what seemed to be troops moving through the courtyard. It hadn't taken long for him to realize their nationality when they began blasting fire at the temple.

Sojin's eyes filled with disbelief, "What the... How did the Fire Nation get here? Only a sky bison can reach the temple," he said to himself. His question was soon answered when he noticed a dragon flying through the air; breathing a large amount of fire.

He noticed one of the firebenders launching a fire ball and it seemed to be heading his way. His gasped as he leaped away from the window and using his airbending for extra distance. The window was completely destroyed; along with a section of the wall as the room caught fire. The bed was burning first and the fire was growing increasingly. Sojin had landed on his hands and was now rushing to get back on his feet as he practically crawled out of the room.

"We are under attack! Air Nomads, get to your designated sky bison!" a voice shouted through the temple; saying the same thing repeatedly.

Why is this happening? Why would the Fire Nation attack us? Did we do something to anger them? Sojin tried to answer these self-imposed questions but he shook his head. He concluded this was not the time to ask questions that no one would care to answer in this state of horror and fear. He finally got back on his feet and sprinted through the temple; heading for his bison Sopa's stable. He heard many explosions and many times he was taken off balance by the quaking of the temple.

"Get the children to safety! Let them leave first!" a voice shouted; guiding many of the Air Nomad children. He hadn't seen it coming when a rocket of fire blasted through the wall and slammed them all to the ground.

Sojin halted his sprinting and stared at the children. They wouldn't move and neither would the elder that had been guiding them. Sojin could feel the tears forcing their way out of his eyes. They had to be dead. He could tell from where he was. Some of their clothes were even burning. He was tempted to go and try to find survivors when he heard the sound of fire. He turned to his right and saw one of the troops that had battered through one of their locked wooden doors.

The soldier pointed at the boy, "Kill him!" he ordered the other soldiers behind him.

Sojin eyes widened in fear as he could already see the soldiers jerking their arms forward; producing a flame that had almost instantly grown. Sojin quickly scanned the area for a window or another door he could escape from. Luckily there was one just in front of him.

Sojin didn't know how he would escape from them; so he just ran and ran quickly. By the time he had turned away from them they had shot flames at him. He used his airbending to jump quickly out of the building and fell through the air; the shawls on his shirt flapped in his face as he flew through the air. He realized that if he didn't do anything to break his fall he'd just splat on the ground.

He thought quickly and shot a hand beneath him, creating a sphere of air on one of the cliffs. He smacked onto it and continued to fall. He continued this process another two times began finally slamming face-down on the ground. He moaned weakly as he shook it off and tried to get up.

He strained softly before seeing a man's foot step in front of him. He looked up and saw Afiko smiling down at him, "Hello, Sojin..." he said, sounding pleased to see the young monk in this condition.

Sojin held out a hand for assistance, "Monk Afiko, please, help me..." Sojin said weakly with pleading brown eyes.

Afiko smirked, grabbing Sojin's arm. Sojin smiled for only a moment when Afiko quickly twisted his arm. Sojin heard a crack and a strong, unbearable pain forming in his arm as he screamed in loud agonizing pain. The younger monk quickly grasped his broken arm and breathed through his teeth; trying to ignore the pain but it was just too great.

The older monk knelt down on one knee and looked into Sojin's eyes, "Go ahead and ask why," he told the boy.

"Why?"

Afiko grinned, "Your friend the Avatar is the cause of all this. Your arm, however, is just my way of saying good-bye. So... good-bye."

Sojin stared angrily into the monk's eyes, "Why are you doing this? The temple is under attack and you're here disabling me. The Fire Nation is trying to kill us all and you're acting as if they can't even see you!"

Afiko turned to the young boy before he approached the boy again; stomping on his back once he reached him, "My dear boy, how do you think the Fire Nation discovered the location of this temple? Weeks ago, after I learned Aang's identity of the Avatar, I told Fire Lord Sozin the location of this temple. I hadn't known that Aang would be gone by now. But don't worry. He'll be dead soon..." he said with a grin of satisfaction.

Afiko swiftly used his foot to kick Sojin in the face; cutting his lip. The boy managed to be able to let out a few words, "You betrayed us. You betrayed your people. You are no monk; you're just a heartless soul."

Afiko stomped on Sojin's skull; breaking his nose as the elder monk began walking away as if he was just going for a stroll; his hands folded behind his back and whistling softly into the air.

Sojin felt something suddenly snap in him. He felt like killing the elder monk with no mercy or remorse. He wanted to murder Afiko and leave his body for the buzzards in some desert. His heart was now becoming a conflagration raging in his heart.

Sojin eyed the monk angrily as he used his free arm to pick himself up. His knee was already badly scraped from the fall as he limped to Sopa's stable; holding his broken arm to his side as it seemed that was the best way to keep the pain from overcoming what strength he had left.

Fire Nation soldiers began surrounding Sojin's bison, Sopa, and were ready to eliminate her. The bison groaned softly upon realizing she was on the edge of a cliff.

"Kill it," one of the soldiers ordered, "The fewer bison alive mean the fewer airbenders that can escape."

The soldiers began to build up small amount of fire, but, due to the enhanced energy they were receiving from the comet; their normally-small-sized flames grew into raging infernos.

Sopa quickly twirled around; smacking her tail against the ground to create a surged wave of air that knocked them all away before they could attack. The solders either slammed into the walls of the mountains or flew through the air like balsa wood.

Sopa, now on alert, ran her eyes through the area. She was unable to ignore the horrifying images that were permanently being stored into her memory. Her home was burning and everywhere she looked an Air Nomad was either running in fear or attempting to fend off a Fire Nation soldier.

The female bison continued to scan the area until she noticed a figure approaching her. At first, the figure seemed to just be a red tinted man but soon revealed himself to Sopa as her owner Sojin.

Sojin limped towards her with a broken arm, sprained knee, pained back, cut lip and a bloody nose with a quirked up lip that represented a half smile in relief that his bison was still alive.

The majestic creature went to aid her owner so that the airbender wouldn't half to walk, or limp, much further. She lied down on her belly and extended her tail out for Sojin to climb up into the saddle.

"Good girl," Sojin managed to say as he climbed up the tail; grasping the creature's fur as to not slip and fall onto the ground. The bison aided Sojin by slowly and carefully raising her tail so that Sojin could easily climb into the saddle. Once he had done that, he laid in the middle of the saddle; panting softly.

"Machi, machi," Sojin managed to say. Just as his friend Aang, Sojin had a special catchphrase to get Sopa flying. The bison smacked her tail against the ground and quickly ascended into the air before turning away from the temple and swiftly moving her legs far back to gain speed.

They were just minutes into flying and Sopa had joined a group of bison carrying numbers of ten or twelve airbenders in each saddle. Behind them, following closely behind, were the Fire Nation's dragons and the soldiers that were guiding them.

Sojin had managed to lean off the side of the saddle where he could indistinctly hear one of the monks shouting something to him. His ears were ringing intensively from having to limp past multiple explosions during the course of reaching his bison. He struggled to ignore the ringing and manage to receive the shouts the monk was sending.

"Sojin… we need… Island… only… -vive…" were the only words Sojin managed to receive.

Sojin's breathing was shallow and raged. The force of the explosions seemed to have disturbed his insides, which made it difficult to breathe and move. Explosions in the distance were low and almost impossible to make out but the young airbender could understand them more effectively than he could the monks shouting to him.

Sojin began to black out as his head began swerving around groggily. His vision became blurry and was worsening each second while he crawled over to the front of the saddle with his unbroken arm. He pulled his head over the edge of the saddle, panting continuously from the lack of respiration of air to his lungs.

"Sopa… we-we need… break away… from the others…" he managed to say before passing out.

Luckily, the bison had received her owner's commands and changed her direction so that she was now flying northeast with her unconscious owner.

Sopa flew in exhaustion through the South Sea; nearing the Island of Kyoshi just as her owner had directed her. Now the young monk lay off the edge of the saddle in the same position he had been when he passed out. His mouth was wide open and saliva was running out of it.

Sojin gradually began to awaken and his eyes blinked several times before he was forced to let out a loud yawn that resulted in him coughing ferociously. The airbender's lungs were throbbing as if someone was pounding against them. Finally, his ferocious cough ended and he groaned.

He grasped his broken arm and stared thoughtfully at it, "How am I going to take care of this?" he asked himself.

His bison became aware that her owner was awake and growled softly. "Come on, girl. Let's find somewhere to land. Maybe the inhabitants of Kyoshi Island can help us."

The bison responded in agreement with a low groan and exhale of air.

During the course of the flight, Sojin could refrain from thinking about the previous night's events. They played over and over in his head from when he was just lying on the bed to passing out in the saddle. The red tint of the guy and the way it reflected off Afiko's face of fulfillment make his skin crawl. Never could he have anticipated that an Air Nomad would give up their location to the Fire Nation. Rage and sadness were flowing through him; making almost impossible to smile for even the smallest of seconds.

A Fire Navy Cruiser sailed through the water containing a search party for remaining airbenders. One of the members of the party were looking through the telescope and keeping a close eye on the creature flying above them. The soldier was trying to confirm that the creature was a bison that belonged to a member of the Air Nomads.

After a few more minutes he was able to confirm that the creature was, in fact, a sky bison. "Sir, I think there's something you might want to see," he called out.

The captain of the ship approached the soldier from behind with his arms crossed, "Have you spotted something?"

The soldier moved from the telescope, motioning the caption to look through it, "See for yourself."

Looking through the telescope, the captain noticed the bison and a sinister smile ran across his face. "I believe we've found one of them," he stated, spinning around and pointing towards the catapult operator, "Raise the catapult. We have a target," he announced.

The operator pulled a switch that raised the catapult from the lower decks where an oil-covered boulder was already armed inside the net. One of the crew members lighted it with a simple current of fire.

The operator waited for the captain to give the order which he gave by pointing towards the bison. The operator pulled the lever and the catapult flipped forward and launched the flaming boulder into the air.

Sojin began hearing the distant sound of fire and he looked over his shoulder. His eyes widened in noticing the large ball of fire. He tried to yell something to Sopa but ended up choking on his own words, literally.

Apparently Sopa had also noticed the ball of fire considering she was now trying her best to fly faster. She tried to turn using her tail but her exhaustion was slowing her down. She turned slightly, only to end up in a direct collision course with the flaming boulder.

Sojin's face flashed with horror, "Come on, Sopa," he said softly, "You can do it. We're gonna make it. I know we are."

The fire ball closed in on them and it was only then that Sojin realized he was wrong. The ball of fire slammed into Sopa's left rib cage and she growled loudly in pain in response. Her control over her flying was deprived from her as she fell uncontrollably through the air towards the island.

Sojin had wrapped his arms around one of the holes in the saddle. The pain in his left arm was completely hidden by the strong force of the wind hammering at his body. His eyes and teeth were clenched shut as the two fell. His mind was free of the events of the night before but had been replaced with the fear that they wouldn't survive the fall.

Sopa slammed and slid through the earth; traveling at about twenty miles an hour. The female bison swept through a forest that became a path of debris. The bison's eyes were closed shut and the feeling of pain filled her face.

One of Sopa's horns slammed against a large rock that resulted in its dismemberment from the rest of the horn. This caused a monstrous pain in Sopa that she couldn't bare to live with.

They slowed down and finally came to a halt that resulted in Sojin being thrown off the saddle. His left arm slammed against the ground first before he rolled against the dirt multiple times before slamming his chest into a rock and possibly cracking a rib. He let out a agonized cry of pain as he grasped his arm and tightened his face that clearly showed pain.

He breathed sharply through his teeth to ease the dying pain. Now his arm ran over his chest; feeling a terrible pain in the middle of his left rib cage. He asked himself how he had managed to survive the last twelve hours. He had fallen six stories, been betrayed and given a broken arm and nose by his own mentor, watched his friends being knocked out of the sky, pummeled to the Earth and now given a cracked rib.

Once the pain had passed, Sojin turned to Sopa. Her eyes were closed and her mouth stayed closed. Her fur was scattered throughout the forest and had dozens of sticks and thorns in her fur. Her right horn had broken off and Sojin couldn't imagine the pain she must have endured during the fall.

"Sopa," he groaned her name as he crawled towards her, "come on, girl. You did it," he said with a manageable smile.

The bison didn't answer, neither did she move or make any response. When she didn't answer, the monk became worried whilst crawling closer to her.

"Sopa?" he questioned upon noticing she wasn't moving, let alone breathing.

He finally reached her and managed to get on his names, "Wake up, girl. We made it," he told the bison, reaching to her left eye and opening it with his hand. Her eye was drained of life. Her eye stared off into space.

Tears began to broke through the barriers of Sojin's eyes, "Sopa, wake up. Please, please, wake up," he said tearfully.

The airbender soon realized that his bison was gone. His head dropped and he began weeping softly. The part of him that had snapped the night before was now cut with a blade. His emotions were a mix of grief, anger, and hatred- a terrible combination that began to tear him apart.

Okay, for the first chapter I feel this turned out pretty good. I hope this story is very good and entertaining for you all. I will probably update about two days a week at first and then I may state what days I will be updating. As always, please read and review.
