Disclaimer: If I owned it, would I be writing fic for it? Probably. But I don't own it.

Author's Notes: I'm just on an angsty Rizzles kick lately. I can't deny my muse! This was written quickly, so I apologize for any typos.

Facts.

Maura had always relied on them. They were one thing in her life that was solid, that never deviated. Maura could always cling to them and, at times, facts had been her only friends. At the moment, there was one fact that Maura couldn't get out of her head. It lived in her brain; constantly pulsing through her thoughts and making her feel sick to her stomach all over again. Maura was completely and utterly in love with Jane Rizzoli.

Jane Rizzoli. Maura's best (only) friend. There was no denying it―Maura didn't just like Jane, she was in love with her. The detective was Maura's polar opposite. But their personalities balanced and, somehow, their friendship just…worked. They filled each other's gaps and knew how to meet in the middle.

But there was another fact (One that hid behind Maura's ribs and constantly expanded to stab her in the heart). Maura knew that, if she ever tried to turn her friendship with Jane into something more, she would be rejected. It wasn't that Jane didn't feel the same way (Maura wasn't oblivious―she saw the way Jane looked at her when she thought the ME wasn't paying attention). It was both her Catholic upbringing and that underlying fear of falling in love (Because the person Jane fell in love with could easily get hurt). Maura knew Jane well enough to realize that the detective would run from her feelings―and from Maura herself. It would break their friendship as well as a possible romantic relationship.

So, that was why Maura stayed quiet about her feelings. She was alone with her facts and her longing. But Maura could deal with that―as long as she still had her friendship with Jane.
