Kurt often thought of his mother. Her leaving them nearly destroyed his father. And it nearly destroyed him. He was only 12 when it happened. At that stage when he was noticing boys more and more, and realizing that he was different. He wondered if his father had known about it, than she probably did too. Did she leave because her son was gay and she couldn't deal with it?

That thought always haunted him. He felt a stab of jealousy when Rachel was reunited with her mother, Shelby. And he felt awful when he found out Shelby didn't want to be a part of Rachel's life anymore, that she thought Rachel didn't need her. He even surprised Rachel by going up to her.

"My mother abandoned us 5 years ago," he told her softly. "If she ever returned, only to leave again, I don't think I'd be able to handle it. Shelby is crazy, Rachel. She doesn't know what she is missing. She should be begging to be a part of your life right now. I'm so sorry."

Rachel had sobbed onto his shoulder when he said that. He held her tightly as he thought of his mother's betrayal.

His father never spoke about her. That was hard for him sometimes. He wanted to talk about her to someone. He mentioned her to Blaine once in a while.

"I feel she left because she couldn't stand me," Kurt admitted to Blaine who listened sincerely. "Because I was so different from everyone. She was never mean to me, but I wonder how much of that was forced. That kindness, I mean. She couldn't have loved me that much, or dad, if she was willing to leave just like that."

"I'm sure she loved you very much," Blaine said quietly, with tears in his eyes as he listened to Kurt's story. "And still does."

"Then why did she leave me, Blaine?" Kurt demanded. Blaine had no answer. "Parents aren't supposed to leave like that," he added. "They aren't supposed to give up, just like that."

That's why he was so thrilled for his father when he proposed to Carol. Now Burt was finally going to be happy. And he might actually get a mother who gave a damn about him. But that still didn't patch that hole that was left in his heart.

That Saturday morning he wasn't expecting anything different. He was quietly eating his breakfast while reading his fashion magazines when the doorbell rang. He opened he stared, wide eyed in bewilderment at his mother who was standing in front of him...
