I present to you the final chapter, in the form of an epilogue.
Disclaimer: I do not own Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, or Okami. All of the wonderful characters belong to their respective owners. Thank you.
Just ahead, Amaterasu saw Waka already sitting under their favorite cherry tree, one leg bent at the knee and the other stretched out upon the grass. Recently, it had become their favorite place to rest and watch the moonrise after a long day.
Her sun was setting as she walked along the soft field, just a quarter circle left against the horizon. Its light was still vibrant, and it colored beautiful splashes of orange across the Celestial Plain.
Amaterasu let herself plunk down beside Waka with a grunt, sighing as she rested her head across his lap.
"A wonderful evening, is it not ma Cherie?" He asked as he automatically began stroking her head.
She could only groan in response as she let her eyes fall shut into black slits. Normally she would be up all day and night, watching over Nippon and ensuring everything was as it should be. Resting had never been a necessity for her until recently. Over the past month Yumigami had graciously offered to watch over the night for her, and she had taken to falling asleep to the sound of Waka's flute every evening.
The rustle of his silky purple pants told her that he was reaching for said flute. As she expected, he began blowing into the instrument, playing the very same melody he performed the day they first met, back on the mortal world in Agata forest. The song brought her back to the time she and Issun had traveled across Nippon, stumbling from one adventure to the next, until they came across another world entirely through time, space, and indeed magic. They had found Hyrule, and then of course they had met him.
Link⦠Not a day went by that she did not think of him. After arriving on the Celestial Plain, she was able to see the universe from a different perspective. Up here it was laid out bare before her paws, and she could understand the portal that bridged Nippon and Hyrule. She learned that Shiranui had sealed the connection between their worlds long ago with the constellation, due to lacking the power necessary to completely sever the connection.
On the first night of returning to the Celestial Plain, she watched Link return to Hyrule through the constellation. After he did, Amaterasu collapsed the portal that breached the gap between their worlds. The constellation lost its power, and the energy scattered. It had pained her to do so, but she knew it would be better that way. Connecting Nippon and Hyrule had only served to bring misfortune to both their worlds.
Since collapsing the portal she could no longer watch over Link or Hyrule. Nippon was the only world she could see below her now. She reminded herself regularly that it was as it should be, but it didn't hurt any less not being able to see or know how he was doing. Of course, there did remain one connection between Nippon and Hyrule which took the form of the Spirit Gate. As far as Amaterasu knew, it remained the one and only way one might travel to Hyrule if they so wished.
Amaterasu had long since made her peace with their situation, but on evenings like this one her heart ached for his company. She was an immortal being, and she knew she would love and miss Link for as long as she lived. She missed his thick and warm neck resting over hers, and the kindness of his blue gaze. She missed everything about him really, and she could only wonder how he was fairing down below in his world. Was he alone? Did his heart still ache as much as hers? She could only blame herself for his pain, and an eternity of a life would not be long enough to ever forgive herself for it.
Waka's tune came to an end, and she felt him adjust his sitting position beside her. After a moment, his hand reached to stroke her side.
"How interesting and marvelous it is that you carry with you a great lineage of both Hyrule and Nippon, Amaterasu."
She simply flicked her ears in acknowledgement, and rolled over on her side to better expose her belly to his soothing strokes. She turned her head to look at herself, and marveled at how pudgy she had become. She knew better than anyone that it wouldn't be long now. The thought never failed to make her tail wag. Ever since she found out, it's reminded her every day that what her and Link shared was not meaningless, that what they went through down on the mortal world really did happen. It wasn't a dream, or even just a memory, and the legacy of their love would live on for an eternity.
Amaterasu sighed again, thinking as she placed her head between her paws. How I wish you could meet your father...
The End
My dear readers, I can finally say that this story is at its end. I can hardly believe it's been six years since posting my first chapter. I find it truly amazing that it's taken me this long to finish this story, but I couldn't be happier to have stuck with it until the very end. I just want to say thank you to all of you who have read and reviewed this story. I can't even begin to say how much I appreciate your words and feedback. It's truly been a wonderful experience going on this six year journey with you all, and I hope that you've enjoyed reading Star-Crossed Wolves as much as I did writing it. Thank you :)
And yes, I know the ending is certainly bitter. I will say that this is the exact ending I've had planned since posting the first chapter. If you hate it, I understand. Tell me your feels in the comments, I am always happy to hear all of your thoughts, positive or negative.
It always made sense to me that Ammy and Link in this particular story would have to part ways at the end. They are both heroes with larger than life destinies who happened to cross paths across worlds and fall in love. But ultimately just like in the game, Ammy still has her mission of returning to the Celestial Plain which isn't something she can ignore. Nor can Link go with her for he doesn't have the resolve to be allowed on the Ark. They were always star-crossed from the very beginning, in more ways than one. And so is the tragedy of their tale /3
