CHAPTER ONE : MEET MAX

"OMG, OMG, OMG! Do you think she likes Hannah Montana? OH! We could give each other makeovers, and do each others hair! We could go to the mall, because I want the Justin Bieber perfume like, so bad! Justin Bieber is hot, and-"

I slapped my hand over Nudge's motor mouth, temporarily cutting of her babbling.

Dr. Martinez, my best friend Iggy's mom, had adopted a foster child, Maximum Ride. Apparently, she was a tough case. Her parents were murdered when she was 12, and she had been abused all her life.

The shrill sound of the doorbell ringing echoed throughout the house. Iggy and Nudge, after sharing a glance, raced toward the door. I fell in step behind them. Iggy got to the door first. Shooting a triumphant smirk at Nudge, he swung the door open.

Standing in the doorway was Maximum Ride. She had dirty blond hair, with an electric blue strip . Her caramel eyes were firm and unwavering, though you could see the pain in them. She was wearing black skinny jeans, and a Paramore tee. Her high-top coverse were battered, duct tape holding together the sides.

Dr. Martinez walked into the room. She opened her mouth to speak, but the social worker interupted her.

"You'll let me know if she causes any trouble, Valencia?" She raised her eyebrows.

Dr. Martinez smiled shyly. "Of course."

The social worker nodded, stepped out the door frame - and closing the door behind her,walked to her blue Toyota.

Dr. Martinez turned to Max and gave her a smile. "Hi, Max. I'm Valencia. Or mom."

She turned to me and offered me a smile. "Hi, Max. I'm Valencia. Or mom."

She pointed to the tall kid, with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. "That's Iggy."

She turned to a girl around 12, with dark skin. "That's Nudge."

Finally, she turned to a boy who I didn't notice until now, with shaggy, straight black hair that reached his ears, and olive skin. "That's Fang."

I just nodded. They seemed like nice people, but I learned not to trust too many people. They always ended up hurting you.

She made a silent promise to herself : In this foster home, Maximum Ride would not be broken.
