Lost

A short reflective piece about Boo Radley

Disclaimer: I'm not that old so clearly I don't own TKAMB, I wish I did but I don't

Arthur never had anyone until he had Scout and Jem. He was lost to Maycomb, a specter with which to frighten naughty children into behaving. He had no identity other than Boo, but somewhere along the way the children touched his heart, and made him want to be a man again instead of a ghost story. He'd watched them play for years without ever telling them, he'd given them presents until Nathan decided that he didn't want any children nosing around his brother anymore, he'd put a blanket around Scout while they watched Miss. Maudie's house burn one freezing winter night, and he'd saved their lives from a spiteful drunk. He'd done all of this without either of them ever knowing that it and without ever expecting a thank you. The children were thanks enough, just knowing that they appreciated his gifts even though they didn't know it was him made him feel alive. Knowing that they were grateful to him was for saving them was thanks enough, it made him feel complete to know that there were people who cared about him. It made him sad to think that Scout felt bad because they had not repaid him for being their neighbor; to him walking home with Scout and knowing that she no longer feared him that she had even begun to care about him was thanks enough. They were his angels who had helped him find himself. While he had no intentions of coming out again, it gave him great satisfaction to know that Scout and Jem would continue to think of him. To them he was their guardian angel and because of that he knew that he'd found himself and he would never be lost again. Even if no one in Maycomb ever knew what he'd done for the Finch's it would not matter because he knew that he mattered to them and that was enough to fill his heart until he thought he would burst with happiness. Finally after twenty-five years of being forced to hide from the world he finally mattered to someone and at the end of the day that was all he really wanted. He was not Boo anymore, he was Arthur Radley and he mattered to two very special children.
