She felt cold. Despite the burning heat from the dragon's flames, she was cold. It wasn't a physical chill that pierced through her body, but something deeper. A sense of fear, and of death. The death of an elf was no small matter. She had known it was insane for anyone, elf or human, to go up against the fires of Shooting Star, and expect to survive. Yet despite the futility of her actions, she was satisfied.
She had once overheard the human soldiers discussing death. The hushed tones of fear and dread had fascinated her, but it had been the idea that when a person dies, their life would pass before their eyes that compelled her to stay. Their belief that images from their lives would appear in their minds had interested her greatly, for no elf had ever discussed death.
She wanted to find those soldiers and tell them they had been wrong. When death is imminent, images were not the only things to appear. What coursed through her were emotions from the past. Joy, when she was a child. Sadness, at the disapproval from her parents. Frustration, at her teachers as well as herself. Pride, anger, hatred. Passion. Love. The strong emotions from her past inundated her, and her mind wandered to the one who had captured her heart. The man she was sworn to protect. The human man whose life was worth more to her than her own.
The intensity of the flames seemed to increase, and she cursed her momentary lapse of attention. The shield she provided was the only thing protecting him against Shooting Star's dying breath. She refocused her energies, pouring her life force, her heart, into the magical shield. Then, just as she had nothing left to give, the fire died out.
She could feel herself falling forward. No need to hang on any more.
Strong arms stopped her collapse, and she knew it was him. She forced the words she thought would please him from her lips. "For...the conquest...of Lodoss..." For you, my love, only for you.
"Pirotess!" His hoarse whisper seemed to hang in the air. The anguish in his voice astonished her. With the last of her strength, she opened her eyes, a tiny smile gracing her lips. 'The only human worthy of my love...' she thought. The chill she had felt earlier from within the dragon's flames had intensified. She gave herself up to the cold.
