Drabble – Code
For as long as he could remember, they had had their own system of communication. Looks, small sounds and body movements were all used to let each other know what the other was thinking. They let no one else in on their secrets.
Alexander was the one in charge, the king, but most did not know that he always sought out to Hephaestion to get his opinions. His was the voice of reason in Alexander's hectic world and his oasis in the whirling storm around him. He didn't always follow Hephaestion's advice but he did listen intently to his reasoning and ideas on any matter he presented to him.
Alexander decided a long time ago that Hephaestion would have made a very strong king in his own right. He was attuned to the people around him, always caring for his men and his subjects and could handle any of the problems of running an empire that would have been presented to him. He was very glad that he was with Alexander and not against him as his enemy.
But now, looking across the room, he saw something else as he looked into those captivating eyes.
And he rose to answer.
