Hello. This is my first FanFiction, so I hope you like it!

A Father's Pain

I let out a relieved sigh. Thank goodness Bambi's okay!

He turned to look at me, then ran along the cliff and jumped onto the rocky ledge I was standing on, and gave me a smile, which I returned with one of my own. I wouldn't normally admit this, but one of the best things in the world to me is seeing my little boy smile.

I heard a crumbling sound and gasped. The cliff cracked underneath Bambi's hooves. He gasped, looking at the rock disintegrating beneath him. But before Bambi or I could do anything, the rock gave way and he fell.

"Bambi!" I yelled down the side of the ledge. The sound of me calling his name echoed around as I raced down the side of the cliff.

'Please let him be okay,' I whispered to myself.

I made it to the bottom, hoping and praying he was alright. I gasped and my eyes grew wide with shock and horror when I saw Bambi lying motionlessly in some dried-up grass. I walked slowly through the mist to my son's side.

"Bambi?" I said. Nothing.

"Get up," I told him. Still he didn't move.

"Get up!" I repeated desperately, my voice shaky.

This might have been bad parenting on my part, but I was starting to get a little angry.

"A prince does not..." I yelled, but I broke myself off. My feelings changed from anger to hurt, sadness and grief. He was gone.

I closed my eyes and shook my head in sorrow. I opened my eyes and sighed, kneeling down on the ground.

I just couldn't believe it. More to the point, I didn't want to believe it! I'd lost my only son. I could feel an aching pain in my heart. It was like a piece of me had been taken away, and I was never, ever going to get it back. Ever!

I lowered my head and nuzzled the side of my face against the side of his. I let a tear run down my cheek. A prince isn't really supposed to show if he's hurting. But for a moment, I didn't care! I stopped being 'Prince of the Forest' and was just a regular dad. I so desperately wanted to see him smile at me and hear the sound of his laugh again.

I sat back up, and his ear flopped down again. I turned away and sighed. As I started to get up, I heard Bambi's voice murmur, "Dad."

My ears pricked up immediately and I gasped. I turned around to look at him.

He opened his eyes and slowly lifted his head.

"I'm here," I said, a smile spreading across my face. I leaned down and nuzzled my head against his again, and repeated softly, "I'm here."

He nuzzled his head against mine. The clouds parted and a full moon shimmered down on us, and at that moment I knew, everything was going to be alright.
