Chapter 3: Teams and testing.
As Naruto, and his first two girlfriends walked into his apartment he was greeted by his third girlfriend. She was tall, and looked to be in her early twenties, but was actually much older, and wasn't in her true shape anyway. She had normal human arms and legs, but had a pair of draconic silver wings and tail. Her face, normally cold and aristocratic, was softened into a gentle smile, and she had a nice figure that complimented her six foot five frame. She was the second attempt by the contact to choose a bride to link the contract holder and signer together, and he was more compatible with her than he was with the Harpy they chose at first.
The 'woman' was wearing a halter top designed to allow her wings full motion, and cover the essentials, as well as a short skirt that ended mid thigh that was tailored to minimize wardrobe malfunctions when she moves her tail. She wasn't wearing shoes as her feet were tough enough to walk on razors without harm.
"Welcome back," The woman said gently. "Did everything go well?
"Thanks, Silvara, and mostly," Naruto said, he then handed the letter he retrieved from the scroll to her and said, "It's been tiring, can we talk in the morning? That letter is why."
The woman nodded as she sat on a stool to start reading it as the boy made his way to bed. What she read made her angry, yes the letter apologized, but it did so in a condescending manner, and the pride in the action also grated on her. The letter made it sound like Naruto should be grateful to the Fourth for sealing the beast in him, and bragged about it for nearly a page. The inheritance all told wasn't anything special, he had deliberately not left instructions to his most powerful jutsus the house had been demolished in the Kyuubi attack, and the amount of cash listed was very little for a man whom was Hokage. All told it read less like an apology, and more like a bragathon, and the mention of an engagement at the end pissed her off greatly
Sighing she folded the letter and decided to join the three in bed, tomorrow was team assignment day after all.

In his office the Third Hokage was finishing the list of teams. He was actually glad there were thirty four graduates. That allowed him to put a human on the same team as the three most concerning prospective genin. He was upset that Naruto had found the letter, as he had hid it, not out of trying to keep it secret from the boy exactly, but because of the boy's probable reaction to it. He made a mental note to explain that to the boy, whom despite the fact that he was cold to him, he cared about. After all, since his summons had told him about the beast and added more seals to the one keeping it contained, that was the only secret directly relating to the boy he had been keeping.
Now he had to decide the last member of the team as well as confirming the sensei. He had warned the one he had initially chosen that it was subject to change. He had three real choices for the addition, and a few were rejected out of hand.
Sasuke was rejected due to his increasing jealousy of Naruto. The boy wanted the girls, and the contract that the blonde possessed. Not to mention the council had pushed for Kakashi to be the boy's sensei, the same man whom joined a mob to kill the three.
Sakura was also rejected, as she resented the girls, for 'stealing' the heart of the boy she 'loved'.
Kiba's pack mentality had him rejected as well, it would've been an advantage in trying to bind group as a 'pack', but disadvantage if he tried to make himself the alpha of an already mostly established group.
Sai... he would possibly work, but wouldn't be able to get overly close to the rest of the team due to Danzo removing his true emotions, leaving obviously fake ones in their place.
Hinata was a possibility. She cared for Naruto, and was timid enough to not cause too many problems with the rest, but she had been requested by Kurenai, which wouldn't be a problem since he could just change jonin.
Shino was the second possibility, he was quiet, and loyal. Perhaps being part of a lively group would get him to open up as well.
The final possibility was actually the most promising, as she wouldn't even try to cause friction as she likes both the boy and girls on the team... in a romantic sense. Now that he thought about it, she was the obvious choice. Kurenai would have to be satisfied with her second choice in teams.
He smiled at the list he had finished, that had five names for the last team.
Team: Naruto, Reizna, Mana, and Hanabi. Jonin sensei: Jiraiya.

The next day had Naruto awakening in bed with three others, the good nights sleep compounded with being close to the ones he cared for had helped is mood tremendously. As he woke the two whom would be accompanying him today and slipped out to start a simple breakfast, he actually chuckled as the most powerful of the four, had a dream to be a housewife, but slept like the dead if there was no danger around, and had the least skill in fighting.
After cooking a simple breakfast of eggs, toast, and bacon, in which Mana helped by setting the table, the three headed to the academy, for both their pictures and team assignments.
After the pictures the three took some seats in the classroom, ignoring with difficulty the screeching of arguing fangirls, questions on why he was here, and various other topics of conversation. Although he did give nod of recognition to Hanabi as she greeted him politely.
At ten o'clock a harried looking Iruka, whom didn't look like he had gotten any sleep came in, and after giving a slight glare at the blonde boy started speaking, "As of today you are genin, and I'm sorry to see you go, but I hope you will do our village proud. Now the teams," Naruto zoned out, only taking note of the number and if it was his team or not. His team didn't get called until last, "Team thirteen, Naruto, Mana, Reizna, and Hanabi. Your sensei will be Jiraiya. You will need to meet your sensei's after lunch. Jiraiya, why are you here?" he asked as said man came through the door.
"I'm here for my team, I decided to start out bonding by taking them to lunch, then testing them afterwards," the man declared. "Team thirteen, follow me." He then turned and walked out, followed by four teenagers. They soon were sitting at an inexpensive restaurant, and after the orders were given and drinks served, he spoke again, let's start with introductions, name, likes, dislikes, and specialty. If you don't have a specialty yet, tell me what you would like to specialize in, if you don't know, that's fine as well.
"I'll start since none of you know me by anything but reputation. My Name is Jiraiya, I like women, sake, and my prized student, I hate that I am often prevented from performing research, and my specialties are fuinjutsu, and summoning. Now blade girl, your up. Oh and you two that aren't human, please add species."
"Mana, Mantis. Likes Naruto, Reizna, Silvera, meat. Dislikes Mobs, Naruto haters, the Fourth. Specialty, blades, earth," the mantis replied.
"Interesting, I can defiantly help with earth jutsus and know people to help with your blades. Your way of talking is... odd, but I can work work with that, now scales your up."
The dragon-girl's eyes narrowed at that nickname, but responded anyway, "My name is Reizna, and I'm a dragon, a species of a group of species commonly called monster-girls, oh and Mana is also part of the group. I like Naruto, Mana, Silvera, meat, and a good fight. I dislike people that hate Naruto, the Fourth, mobs, and vegetables. My specialty is using my claws in combat and fire. "
"Naruto, no last name. I like my girls, ramen, my summons, and training. I hate The Forth, toads, perverts, the civilians of the leaf, well mostly, a good chunk of the shinobi, Hyuugas, although I can tolerate a few, and lies. My specialties are blades and wind jutsus. Word of warning, put any of my girlfriends in your books, and I'll find a way to make you hurt."
"I know some fire jutsus, but I will have to help you perform them without hand seals, and I should be able to help with your claws through sparring."
Reizna pitched in at that point and said, "If you want to make a book with monster girls, I can tell you some about a dozen or more species."
The toad sanin nearly winced at the hate list, it basically shredded most of his plans for the boy's training. He responded with a smile, strained as it was, "I can't really help with the blade training or wind jutsus, outside sparring of course, but I know those that can, and thank you for the offer."
"Hanabi Hyuuga. I like Naruto, his girls, training, and trying to learn new techniques behind my fathers back. I dislike ignorant people and the restrictive rules of the clan. My specialty is taijutsu, but I have been trying to learn about my lightning affinity.
The toad sage nodded, and realized that his new male student might gain another in his harem if he can get over his dislike of the clan, and he might be able to convince Haishi to let his daughter learn from him. "I'll talk to your father about expanding your skill set. Now tomorrow I want you to meet me here at nine am for your final exam."
The four nodded, and dispersed.
For tomorrow would be a long day.

Jiraiya arrived at the training grounds an hour late due to a last minute meeting with his old sensei, to see a pile of bodies. Worrying he rushed over to the, only to realize his entire team was napping in a pile, with Hanabi having snuck in afterwords by the look of it. 'She has it bad,' he thought before breaking down in laughter.
His laughter woke the perspective genin, and three sets of eyes narrowed when they saw the fourth person. The dragon-girl, ignoring the laughing idiot, dragged the younger girl off for a privet 'chat'. Five minutes later as the old man got his laughter under control, the two came back, although the Hyuugia looked rather shaken, but not completely hopeless or terrified.
He frowned at that. Their teamwork looked like It'd need some work, but if the girl could at least work with two out of the three, he'd call it a win. He decided not to use the classic bell test, at least in the original format. He pulled out four bells, and said, "I have here four bells, if you still have yours at the end of half an hour, you pass, if you don't, you fail and will go back to the academy." he paused here and tossed a bell to each of the teens. " Come at me with intent to kill, or you will fail. You have five minutes to hide, or prepare. Starting now!"
the four scattered in a fan arrangement, his brow furrowed when he realized that they didn't go the maximum distance between each other, but shrugged as he realized it was actually promising that they didn't.
At the end of the five minutes he tracked down the Hyuuga. She was the weak link in the group, as she was an outsider added into an already established group. Finding her alone he engaged her in close combat, his superior skill and experience trumping her family style. He was disappointed when nobody came to her aid, until his danger sense went off like an alarm. He barely managed to dodge the mantis whom went to cut off his head. He managed to avoid her blade by dodging to the left and ending up a good five feet from his first opponent, and he realized that while she had been truthful, she had neglected to mention her stealth skills. It was then a cone of fire, which missed Hinabi by a good two feet and forced him to do a replacement jutsu, and sweat-dropped as the log was rendered into ashes.
"perhaps I shouldn't have told them to come at me with an intent to kill," the now nervously sweating man mumbled softly, only to curse as he dodged Mana again.
He then rolled to the side to dodge the kunai that were thrown at him. Unfortunately this put his back in reach of his first opponent, whom took him down with some Junken strikes to the back wile he was distracted by the well camouflaged mantis, knocking him out cold.
He woke an hour later to see his students smirking and holding their bells. He was shocked. He had expected the three to take advantage of the rules he set forth to remove the other girl. Instead they passed with flying colors. "Congratulations, you pass. I honestly was expecting you three to use the opportunity to try and ditch the fourth member of your team. The fact that you didn't demonstrates that you all understand teamwork. I am upset you didn't mention all your specialties, but good job anyway. Now your dismissed while I go report."

Seven hours later saw the last jonin sensei arriving.
"Kakashi, where were you? You were supposed to be here over six hours ago!?" Sarutabu growled. This was far beyond acceptable. He had been putting up with the three hour lateness for over a decade, but over six? That was unacceptable.
Kakashi flinched at the tone of voice. Perhaps being three hours late for the meeting, as well as being three hours late for his genin was a bit much. "Sorry I got lost on the..."
"Enough with your lame excuses Kakashi. I'm going to start docking your pay if your late again. We have other things to do beyond wait for you to get your ass here, understood? Now everyone report on your teams."
The man nodded at the thought of his paycheck being reduced further. He then decided to speak first, "Team seven passes. Sasuke has real promise, much more than the rest of the class, and Sai is also quite good. Sakura is OK."
Jiraiya's eyes narrowed at the bragging, but spoke next, "Team thirteen passes. They surprised me, and if they actually wanted me dead, I would be. I targeted the weak link, the one I figured the three wouldn't care if she failed, and they defended her, viciously, and with perfect teamwork. Mana's assassination technique is exceptional."
Of the remaining teams, only eight and ten passed.
The fact that he had four teams pass, with only one or two passing in the previous years made the Third Hokage pleased.
His happy mood lasted until an ANBU came in and told him the council was meeting and ordered Naruto to attend.
Dismissing the jonin the old man stalked into the council chambers, and throwing the doors open, he saw that a full council had been called, and Naruto was in the seat reserved for defenders.
"WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?" the old man roared, stopping the discussion in it's tracks.
The look on the advisers face that the old man was there was priceless...
