Jace stepped out onto the field and breathed in the clear, crisp air. His first game of his last season and he was ready. He looked to his left and right as he bathed in the screaming of the crowd. His best friends filled out the first line, Jace himself was the quarterback, he was the captain of his the team in his senior year and he waited for the game to begin. He knew his best friend Jonathan 'Sebastian' Morgenstern would be behind him, running back, ready to receive the play. He knew that his friends Alexander 'Alec' Lightwood would be in position to run, as wide receiver Alec used his speed to aid in plays. Jonathan Wayland stood on the other side, mirroring Alec as wide receiver.
Jace let the cheering fill his body with adrenaline, and on the whistle he wound back for the first throw of the year. Jace loved hearing the roar in his ears, he loved the adoration he gained from the crowd. The lights that illuminated the pitch were the lights that Jace lived for.
Ash Academy played against their rivals Glass Academy and they battled it out fiercely, but as the time on the clock dwindled down Jace made the play, he kept the ball after pretending to pass it to Sebastian and he took off with his full force down the field, his team was keeping the players from Glass Academy off him and Jace dove into the end zone. With the roar of the crowd in his ears he knew he'd done it, his touchdown propelled the score for Ash Academy into winning. They still had to kick for the field goal but Jace knew that the game was theirs and when the buzzer sounded he felt his friends and teammates. They had won their first game.
The people in the stands, and the cheerleaders mingled in with the football players.
"Good Game!" Everyone called. The boys all huddled up to listen to the coach, Michael Wayland, congratulate them and then remind them of the practice that would be Monday after school.
Jace and the rest of the boys went to the locker rooms to change. "Good game, Jace!" Sebastian said, clapping him on the shoulder. "You too Alec!" Alec flushed and tried to dodge the compliment but he knew he had done well.
Jace was the first to get ready so he waited out by his car for the rest of his friends to join him, "Good game son," Valentine Morgenstern said patting him on the shoulder, "You played well."
"Thanks Valentine," Jace smiled at his best friend's father, "I didn't know you would be at the game tonight."
"Yes, your parents made it, and the Lightwoods and I mean of course Michael Wayland made it."
"Well he has to make it," Jace said with an eye roll.
"What are you boys doing tonight?" Valentine asked.
"I think we're going to Alec's house or to mine, do you have to work?"
"Yes, I have the night shift, can you make sure Sebastian is at the airport for 10am please? He sometimes forgets to wake up."
"Don't I know it, but why does he have to go to the airport?"
Valentine shot a confused look at Jace, "Did Sebastian not tell you? His sister is coming in tomorrow to live with us."
Now it was time for Jace to look confused, "Sister?" Valentine nodded and looked down at his watch.
"You'll have to ask Sebastian, I have to go. But good game!" Valentine hurried over to his car.
Jace saw his parents, who congratulated him, as they hurried to get to work. Finally Sebastian, Jonathan and Alec joined Jace at his car. "Sebastian, your father told me to remind me to get your sister tomorrow, you want to explain that?" Jace said as they shoved all of the gear into the back of the car.
"Holy shit I forgot," Sebastian hit his forehead and threw himself into the front seat, Alec and Jonathan sat in the back and waited for Sebastian to elaborate, "Well I have a younger sister, Clarissa, when my parents split up I was only 2 so I don't remember her but my mother took Clarissa with her to London with her and I stayed here with my dad. But Clarissa's mother, my mother, passed away and we're her only family so she's coming here."
"Is she younger than we are?" Alec asked.
"Only by thirteen months or so we were born very close together." Jace drove to the Lightwood house, the Lightwoods only lived a few blocks away from the street that Jace and Sebastian lived on. The boys went down to the basement and started to watch a movie. They were interrupted by Alec's sister, Isabelle and a few of their friends joining the. Aline Penhallow and Kaelie Whitewillow.
"This is what the stars of the football team do after the big game?" Kaelie asked.
"Yes," Alec sighed, "We're tired. Those games are hard!"
"Fair enough," Isabelle allowed, "Are you staying here for the night Alec?"
"Well I do live here," Alec said, "So I was planning on it."
"Well good, mum and dad work at 4 and I'm going to Aline's for the night. So you have to watch Max!"
"Yeah that's fine," Alec said, "Just tell him you're leaving, how are you getting there?"
Isabelle shot a look at Jace, "Well I was hoping to ask my wonderful, handsome friend Jace if he would give us a drive. Kaelie drove us here but has to go." Isabelle stuck her bottom lip out in a pout but Jace didn't even look at her.
"Sure Izzy," He said, his eyes on the movie. "No need to pout I wouldn't make you two walk."
"Thanks Jace!" Aline and Isabelle said as they walked up the stairs with Kaelie who said her goodbye to the boys. Isabelle didn't often get told no, because she was incredibly beautiful and charming when she wanted to be. But Jace only ever saw the tall, dark haired girl as a sister. Jace had dated Aline when they were freshmen but that was water under the bridge and neither of them ever mentioned it. Jace had also been with Kaelie Whitewillow but she hadn't gotten over it as well as Aline had. The three girls returned to the basement for a little while to watch the movie. Isabelle was the tallest of the three and had pale skin, she had the same inky black hair as her brother but her eyes were dark brown so dark that people often mistook them for being black. Kaelie was just a bit shorter then Isabelle and had equally as pale skin but that's where the similarities stopped, she had white blonde hair that was dyed green at the bottom and bright blue eyes. Aline didn't look much like either of the girls, she was from Asian decent and that was evident in the shape of her face, her eyes were deep brown but not as dark as Isabelle's and her hair was cut just below her chin in a dark bob. Aline was over a head shorter than Isabelle.
The three girls played for the soccer team, Isabelle was the captain and was hoping to lead the team to their first championship in three years. Isabelle was determined to bring home the championship banner for her school. Jace had no doubt in his mind than she could do it and he wanted to lead his own team to the championship. They had lost the year previous to Glass Academy and that was a crushing defeat.
Just after eleven the movie finished and Jace, Sebastian, Jonathan, Aline and Isabelle left the Lightwood house. Sebastian claimed the passenger's seat so the other three had to sit in the back. Aline lived on the same street as Jonathan so it was an easy trip.
"Do you know how to put together a bed?" Sebastian asked as they drove along the quiet streets.
"Probably, why?" Jace was too tired to make jokes.
"Clarissa's new furniture came in earlier today and I told my father I'd put it together for her."
"Didn't think you'd be so eager for me to get on your sisters bed," Jace said drily.
"Jace, please," Sebastian sighed, "I'll have to get up at 4 to get everything together."
"I'll be over at 7, but you need to bring be home a bagel on your way from the airport," Jace said. Jace wasn't about the leave his best friend in a tough situation, he was quick to make a joke or tease but if someone needed something Jace would help if he could.
"Cinnamon raisin bagel with butter and a tea with one sugar?" Sebastian asked, but he already knew the answer.
Jace parked in his own driveway but Sebastian lived in the house next to his, so he could just walk through a walkway in the hedge and he'd be at his own house. Jace only nodded and dragged himself to his front door. "See you bright and early, sunshine!" Sebastian called over his shoulder.
"You're lucky I like you Sebastian," Jace cut his eyes at his friends.
"Oh you love me!" Sebastian hurried through the hedge walkway to his own door. Neither of Jace's parents were home when he got there so he just headed up to his room. Both of Jace's parents worked at this hospital, his father was a doctor and his mother a nurse. Valentine, both of the Lightwoods, the Wayland's and the Penhallow's all worked at the hospital as well. Jace decided he should get a cat as he laid in his bed after his shower and decided he should get a haircut, his blond hair was in his eyes.
Jace fell asleep watching Netflix and woke up to his alarm blaring, he grumbled as he got dressed and headed over to Sebastian's house, the front door was locked but Jace had his own key and let himself in.
"Honey I'm home!" He called through the house.
"I'm just making coffee," Sebastian answered from the kitchen. "Black like your soul?"
"Nah, strong and sweet like my personality," Jace said.
Sebastian didn't reply, he just made Jace his coffee and lead him upstairs to the bedroom that would belong to his sister. Sebastian looked a lot like Valentine, tall, slender, platinum blond hair, and a carefully carved face, his eyes were dark green unlike Valentines dark brown ones. Jace had a hard time picturing a female Sebastian. He imagined a tall, slender, girl with pale blond hair, much like Isabelle but with different coloring.
The two started with the dresser, then the desk and they had just finished the bookshelf when Sebastian noticed that it was 9:30. "I've got to go," Sebastian realized.
"You go, I'll get on your sisters bed," Jace said with a grin.
"I'll ignore your comments because you're helping."
Sebastian hurried form the house, Jace heard him pull out of the driveway and down the street. Jace started on the bed frame, all of the furniture in Clarissa's room was black and the walls were white so the room looked plain. The bed was a pain in the ass to put together, it was low to the ground and had drawers on the sides to store stuff in so it took a lot longer than he thought to put together.
Jace knew that Clary had the second biggest bedroom in the house, after the master bedroom, she had her own bathroom and a large closet. Sebastian had never wanted the bigger bedroom, he had his own little balcony which he could access from his window so he liked that better. The Morgenstern house had five bedrooms, three had been guest rooms but now only two were. Jace's own house had two bedrooms left but the bedrooms were larger, if that were possible. Jace moved the furniture around so he could get the box spring and mattress on the frame he had painstakingly put together. He put the desk and chair beside the window and day bed. He put the dresser across form the window and the bed coming from the middle of the back wall so all of the drawers could be used. When he walked into the room, trying to move the bed pieces by himself he saw Sebastian and Valentine's cars pulling into the driveway together, the window was across from the door but it didn't give much of a view to anything besides the street, a few trees and into Jace's own window.
Jace didn't go downstairs he just kept putting together Clarissa Morgenstern's room. He could hear the familiar voices of Sebastian and Valentine but also a higher, softer voice that must have belonged to Clarissa.
Jace was just finishing putting the book shelf pieces on the wall facing the bed when footsteps started to come up the stairs.
"Oh," A soft voice said. Jace turned to see the girl who must have been Clarissa Morgenstern standing in the doorway. But she wasn't what he had expected. Not by a long shot. "Um. I, I thought this was my room." Clarissa said softly in her accented voice, Jace hadn't expected the accent but he should have, she had grown up in London.
Jace heard Sebastian curse has he rushed up the stairs, "I'm sorry I totally forgot Jace was upstairs," He said, "Clarissa this is Jace Herondale, my best friend."
"I'm Clary," The girl said. Jace was still too shocked by her appearance to react. Jace had expected a tall, blonde girl but he found himself looking at a girl who looked nothing like that. Clarissa Morgenstern was short, if she was over 5 feet tall it would be just barely, and she was slim, hidden by the large sweater she wore. She was pale but her face was splashed with freckles, her eyes, like Sebastian's, were bright green but Clary's hair was red. It was curled all over the place and bright red. "Why isn't he speaking?" Clary asked quietly.
"I'm sorry," Jace said, "My name is Jace, but don't mind me I'm just the help around here. Just forget I'm here." He pretended that he was dusting the book shelf, in hopes of redeeming himself for staring.
Clary just looked confused and tired so she waited for Sebastian to say something, "Don't mind Jace, he's here a lot, so I'll apologize in advance. He was helping me put your things together, but I had to go so he finished. Is everything okay where it is or should we move it? It isn't a problem to move it."
The girl looked around at the room and shook her head, "Everything is perfect, thank you. This is more than I expected, really." Jace noticed that she looked very sad, but something had just happened to her mother so that was reasonable.
"You need not thank us Clarissa," Valentine said, coming into the room, "I'm just glad you're here safe. Is there anything you need?"
"No thank you," Clary said, "I'd just like to un-pack and maybe eat something that isn't airplane food."
Sebastian and Valentine exchanged a quick look, both were mediocre cooks at best and they wanted her to be comfortable, "You know what," Jace said quickly, "I think the perfect thing to make you feel better after a long flight is some of my mother's soup."
Valentine heaved a noticeable sigh of relief, "Do you live here?"
"He might as well," Sebastian said, "He has his own key. But no, he lives in the house next door. If you look out the window you can see the side of it. We'll let you unpack for now, call if you need anything."
"We'll just be downstairs," Valentine said. He gave his daughter a weary smile before he and Sebastian left the room.
Clary sat on the edge of her bed, "Thank you," She said.
"Don't worry about it," Jace said, "Just make yourself at home, this place isn't so bad."
"I hope you're right."
Jace left the house and went over to his own, his mother was in the kitchen when he got there. Celine Herondale looked tired but she pulled her son into a tight hug when she noticed he was there.
"You played wonderfully last night, honey," She said, giving him a kiss on the cheek, "What are you doing home on a Saturday afternoon?"
"Well Valentines daughter just got in so I was enlisted to put her room together," Jace said casually.
Celine looked shocked, and Jace realized that maybe Valentine hadn't told anyone about Clary. "No one has seen her in years, not since Evelyn took her and refused to let Valentine see her," Celine murmured, "How is she?"
"She's doing as well as she can be, but I mean she just lost her mother and I'm assuming she's pretty frightened being alone in a new place. She said she was hungry so I was coming over to get some of that sou…." Jace was cut off by the sound of his mother mumbling about Valentine being unable to cook, she brought a large pot from the fridge and left the kitchen.
Jace just followed his mother from the house and right into the Morgenstern house without knocking. "I see where I get my intrusive tendencies from," Jace said as his mother bustled into Valentine's kitchen.
Valentine sat at the island and looked stressed, Sebastian sat beside his father and shared his facial expression. Jace figured they just wanted Clary to like them, and that they wanted her to feel at home, but Jace figured it would take some time to get used to the large Morgenstern house. It was a pretty intimidating house to be lead into.
As the soup was heating up Celine turned the kettle on, "You forgot my tea and bagel," Jace said.
"Sorry, I got nervous," Sebastian admitted. "I'll buy you one tomorrow morning."
"OH I like breakfast in bed. Will you wear a pretty dress too?" Jace teased.
"Only for you," Sebastian said offhandedly.
All three of the boys were startled when Celine spoke over them, Clary had drifted into the kitchen so quietly that none of their sleepy ears picked up the sound. "Would you like some tea?"
"Yes please," Clary smiled, "Um, who are you?"
"Oh I'm sorry, I'm Celine Herondale, Jace's mother. I brought soup because Valentine is a dreadful cook."
"I'm not that bad," Valentine protested, "I made rice the other night!"
"No I made rice the other night," Jace said, "You watched."
Clary chuckled without much humour, it was a sad sort of laugh, "Where will I be going to school?"
"Ash Academy," Valentine said, "Your brother and Jace both go there. Great school. Celine and I graduated from there as well."
Clary started to say something then paused, "You two were in the same graduating year?"
Celine shook her head quickly, "The rest of the children in your age, that are friends with Jace and Sebastian have parents who were in the same year as Valentine, but I was a few years younger."
"She graduated high school the same year her husband went into his last year of med-school," Valentine said. "She was robbed from the cradle." Celine hit Valentine in the back of the head with the oven mitt.
Jace's mother was seven years younger than his father who had been married once before his mother.
"Either way you'll be going there, you'll have to go get the things for your uniform on Monday morning before classes."
"I'm going to a private school?" Clary asked. Celine gave everyone a bowl of soup and made Clary a tea.
"Nice to meet you Clarissa, I'm going back home but if you need anything just send Jace over. See you all later!" Celine left the rest of the soup on the oven and let herself from the house.
"Yes," Valentine said, "Best in the state actually. I think you'll be happy there."
Clary just nodded and ate her soup, contemplating everything that was going on. After she ate Clary took her tea to her room, saying she wanted to lay down. Valentine did the same, he'd just had an all night shift.
Jace went over to his house to start some of his homework, that despite it only being three weeks into the year, was starting to pile up.
Clary sat on the edge of her bed and looked around her new room. It was nothing like what she'd expected. Clary hadn't expected a huge house, to be going to a prestigious private school and she hadn't expected how kind Valentine and Sebastian were. Since Clary was a young girl and started asking about her father her mother had always said very little about her father and when she did it wasn't kind. This left Clary with the impression that he wasn't the best parent out there. She didn't even know about her brother until two years previous. But Valentine seemed to genuinely care for both of his children, enough to make sure that they had the best of everything. Including the first class seat he'd put Clary on.
Clary's mother had been a nurse at the hospital back in London, but she didn't make anywhere close to the money Valentine appeared to, her mother had just enough to support the two of them. Clary's mother had passed away almost three months previous to Clary getting to America, Clary had time to cope and grieve. She'd been living with her mother's friend for a while, waiting for the government and her case worker to figure everything out. It was a long process getting Clary the right papers to go to America where she was technically still a citizen. If she had been any younger she would have become a ward of the state and Valentine would have had to fly to London to collect her. But clary was 16 so it wasn't quite as hard a process. She had spoken to her father a few time on the phone during the three months while they were trying to get her to America. The first time she called was the first time she'd ever spoken to her father. According to Valentine he had tried to call but Clary's mother wouldn't let Clary talk, and he tried to send money but Evelyn would always rip up the letters or send them back. That sounded like something her mother would do. Clary remembered the same American number coming up at least six or seven times a year, but she was never to answer those calls, Evelyn would always answer them and have a very heated discussion with the 'telemarketer' who was probably Valentine.
The house was large and Clary couldn't imagine what two people would do with all of that space that was in the house but it was a lovely house nonetheless. Clary had her own bathroom, she brought her bathroom supplies that she'd brought with her and put them in there. Clary looked at herself in the mirror. Everyone always said she looked like her mother, Evelyn, but she didn't think so. Clary felt like a more childlike version of her mother. She felt that her hair was more carroty then the dark red of her mothers had been and she had a more childlike face.
Clary was a bit startled by a knock on her door. "Come in," She called. Sebastian stood in the doorway.
"Um, our father says we should get your phone set up and everything. He mentioned that you might want some blankets for the bed, unless you like to sleep on a mattress in that case enjoy."
Clary nodded, "How much are phone plans here? I had a job back home and I have some saved for university but I don't know ab…"
"You don't have to worry about that," Sebastian assured Clary, "Dad just wants us to focus on school and getting into a good collage so he takes care of that."
"What about UNI? Don't we have to pay for that?"
"Lord no," Sebastian said. "Dad has a trust fund for both of us. To pay for our school."
"Even for me? But I haven't been with him since I was a baby."
Valentine appeared behind his son, "That does not mean you aren't my daughter. Your mother was foolish to deny my help when she needed it, but I wasn't about to have you struggle through collage when your brother had it paid for. I was going to fly to London myself and give you the money if I had to."
Clary had a brief image of Valentine snowing up at her doorstep with a brief case full of money, that isn't how it would work but Clary was amused and touched by this image.
"My mother was a proud woman," Clary admitted, "I don't know why she didn't take your help."
"Your mother blamed me for the failing of our marriage, she blamed me for taking her son from her and she was angry that I repeatedly tried to take her daughter."
"You did?" Clary didn't remember her father ever being in her life.
Valentine nodded, "Up until you were 7 I went to the court every year to get them to intervene, your mother wasn't stable when she left me, that's why she left me and I was concerned for your safety, but your mother fought to the bone to keep you. So I tried to send money, I tried to call but nothing ever worked."
Clary wanted to defend her mother but she couldn't, there was nothing she could say to defend the truth. Clary knew her mother was not stable, she had struggled with bouts of depression and mania for all of Clary's life. "She always did her best to take care of me," Was all Clary could say.
"I know Clarissa, I am not knocking your mother for that, I just think it's unfair that you were taken from me and your brother and your aunt and cousins."
Clary was a bit startled, "Aunt?"
Sebastian and Valentine shared a quick look, "Yes, your mothers twin sister, Jocelyn Greymark, she lives here. She's married with two children, Liam and Elizabeth. Your mother severed ties with Jocelyn when she left."
"I'd like to meet her," Clary decided. Valentine nodded.
"Everyone wants to meet you Clarissa, they all knew you as a baby. But there's time for that, you should go get the things you'll need, blankets, pillows, things like that. We should make this place seem more like your own room."
"I do have some of my things coming, a few books, some pictures, and my jewelry box. They should be arriving soon. But I don't have much. Just the two bags I had on the plane and the box I mailed here."
"Well get whatever you need to make this place feel like home," Valentine said, "I'll come too," He decided drifting from the room.
Clary sat on the edge of her bed again, Sebastian sat beside her "This place isn't bad."
"I don't think it will be bad. It's just a bit overwhelming. I sound funny."
"You don't sound funny people find accents charming," Sebastian assured his sister, "How did she die?"
Clary looked down at her lap, "She killed herself," She said, "Our mother was diagnosed with MS and during a fit of manic depression she decided that was no way to die so she took it into her own hands."
"Are you angry with her for that?"
"No," Clary said softly, "Our mother lived to help people at the hospital, that was her whole life, it's where she was happiest there or volunteering at the shelter. For her life without being able to walk or do things for herself would have been hell."
Sebastian and Clary sat in silence for a while, "Dad is the same way."
"Get yourself ready, our father worked an all night shift. If we don't get him some coffee soon he's going to keel over."
Clary chuckled and went to her bathroom, she pulled her hair back and splashed some water on her face. Clary had been sad to leave her friends, school and life behind but as she walked down the stairs to meet Valentine and Sebastian she decided she would take it in stride, if she didn't adapt and try to enjoy it her she'd just suffer. So she might as well just make the best of it.
Hope you enjoyed that, Review or send me a PM, I always love hearing your ideas and if anyone is looking to Beta for me that would be great and would allow me to update more often, and would allow the quality to go up. So thanks so much.
