A/N. Epilogue! Wow, this is probably the most productive I've been in a long time, haha. How many chapters did I put up this week? Like three in a row? Four in a row? Pretty amazing. :D
Thank you all again for being with me on this journey, through For the First Time and Behind Closed Classrooms. Thank you all for reading and reviewing and just being plain awesome friends to me! I always say you guys shape me and just make me the happiest person ever, but it's true. So, thank you. I mean it. :D
I will not be writing a third story because I'm already grateful to Jordan for giving me permission to write the first two, so this is it. But if you do want to read about Daphne's/Holly's college life, Jordan has started that story on Wattpad, An Everlasting Relationship (title subject to change).
Be at War with your Vices, at Peace with your Neighbours, and let every New-Year find you a better Man. ~Quoted in Benjamin Franklin's 1755 Poor Richard's Almanac, December
Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland
Have a very wonderful New Year and keep smiling because it's infectious. :D
Enjoy!
Epilogue
The next morning, I woke up, yawning. Arching my back, I stretched my arms, accidentally poking something to my right. I opened my eyes blearily and nudged it again.
My eyes flew open.
Pillows definitely do not have abs.
A figure loomed over the bed. Stifling a scream, I kicked them in the groin. They yowled, falling over onto the floor.
"Sugar monkeys!" they shouted, crawling into a ball.
I shook Matt awake. He shot up, automatically wrapping his arms around me. "Daphne? What happened? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine!" I said, getting out of the bed and softly kicking the man on the ground. "Puck! How'd you get in here? You almost gave me a heart attack!"
"Geez, Marshmallow! Give me a breather for a second. Damn, that hurt," he winced, almost whimpering.
Matt looked amused. "I'm pretty sure I gave you a key so you wouldn't have to sneak in. Not to try and scare Daphne."
"I wasn't going to scare her," he said, huffing. He grabbed one of the bed posts to pull himself up. "I was going to surprise her for graduating!"
"What? By giving me a heart attack?" I said, crossing my arms.
"No," he said in a "duh" voice. "First I was going to jump on you and hug you screaming, 'Congratulations!' in your face, and then I was going to give you this cute little teddy bear." He pulled out a fluffy stuffed animal wearing a graduation cap and holding a diploma. "But I guess you'd rather kick me in the nuts than have it, right?"
"Oh, be quiet and give it." I rolled my eyes as he handed it to me. "Aw, it's so cute!" I grinned. "I love it; thanks, Puck!"
"Whoa, what? All he has to do is shove a stuffed animal in your face and he's off the hook?" Matt hesitated. "Wait, that sounds like something you would do anyways."
"Hey!" I said. "Well, you sound like-"
"-As much as I'd like to hear your lovey-dovey banter -which I don't," Puck said, smirking at the two of us. "You need to go get dressed because-"
"Hey, you three! I can hear you! I cooked breakfast!" I heard Sabrina's muffled voice outside the door.
It looked like Puck was completely healed now, as he shot up and flew out of the room, scaring poor, little Milkshake. "Breakfast! I love you, honey!"
"Hey, get off of me, weirdo!" I heard a small crash and some giggling. "Nathan, don't touch that!"
I laughed, grabbing Matt's hand and leading him towards the bathroom. "C'mon, let's get ready and go downstairs. I'm actually really hungry right now."
"All right." He chuckled. "Are we showering together?"
"Um, if you want to," I said, my cheeks feeling hot.
Matt laughed, squeezing my hand. "Yeah, I want to."
We were freshened up and ready for the day fifteen minutes later. I wore a purple long-sleeve and white shorts while Matt wore his favorite grey V-neck and jeans.
We walked downstairs to find Nathan, with a cracked egg on his head, wiping pancake mix onto his cheeks and Sabrina and Puck throwing flour on each other.
"Sabrina, I trusted you not to be as childish as my brother," Matt said, glaring at the scene before him.
"It was his fault!" she shouted, socked her husband in the arm. "Idiot," she said to Puck, who rubbed his sore arm.
"You Grimm women are so violent," he muttered.
Matt let out a frustrated sigh. "Now I'm going to have to clean this all up, aren't I?"
"No, I came prepared. Puck always makes a mess," Sabrina said, taking out a wand, her hands coated with flour. "Err, Daphne, could you…"
"Sure," I said, grinning. "I haven't actually used magic in a while! This is exciting!"
"As long as you don't go power hungry with it, I don't mind you using it," Puck said as he picked up Nathan. "Actually, I'd prefer you over Sabrina any day. One day she used the wand to get a whip to-"
"That's enough!" she shouted, clamping a hand over his mouth. "He's lying!"
Matt quirked an eyebrow. "I never knew you were so naughty, Sabrina."
"Shut up! I didn't use a whip on him!"
"Sure," I said, laughing. "Now, um, 'Gimme some cleaning supplies!'"
With a pop! a mop and a bucket of warm water appeared along with a scraper, some cloth, and vinegar.
"Nice, you're still pro, Marshmallow," Puck said. "Now pull a Mickey Mouse and make the supplies start cleaning the kitchen!"
"Actually, Puck," Matt said, putting a hand on my shoulder. "I was thinking that you would clean up the kitchen. Now." I'm glad I wasn't the source of his glare because it was really scary at the moment.
"Fine, fine. Gimme the bucket."
"Good. Here." He handed Puck the supplies. "I expect everything to be as it was before."
"I'll go remake breakfast," Sabrina offered.
Matt shook his head. "No, it's okay, I'll do it; Daphne wants a five star cuisine anyway."
Sabrina raised an eyebrow at me. "Really?"
"Not that yours isn't good, Sabrina! But you should try Matt's –it's really, really good!" I said, trying to avoid Matt's cocky gaze.
"Why don't you two get Nathan cleaned up? He's in a bit of a mess," Matt suggested, pointing to my nephew.
"Oh my god!" Sabrina grabbed Nathan before he could completely stuff himself inside the flour bag. "Nathan, no! Bad! Come on, Auntie Daphne and I will get you cleaned up." She carried him off into the bathroom.
"We'll be back." I grinned at Matt, then I followed after Sabrina.
When I got to the bathroom, Sabrina was muttering to herself as she pulled Nathan's shirt off. "Stupid Puck...always making a mess...I'm going to kill him..."
I turned on the facet in the bathtub and waited for the water to get warm. "Sabrina, Puck's just being Puck, you know that, right?"
She sighed exasperatedly. "I know. I wish he would be a little more mature though. Sometimes I feel like he's doing this to purposefully annoy me. Making a mess at other people's houses and almost destroying their kitchens embarrasses me, and I'm sure he knows it. It would be nice if he didn't do that."
I thought about it as I took off the egg goop in Nathan's hair. "He just likes the attention. And he always wants your attention when you're around, so I think that's why he does it. If you tell him you really don't want him to do it anymore, I'm sure he won't because he loves you."
Sabrina laughed. "Why aren't you the wise girl all of a sudden?"
"Hey!"
"It's a good thing." She smiled. "Maybe you should be the older sister, huh?"
I shook my head as I put Nathan in the tub. "Haha, no way! I like that you're the older sister; and you say a lot of wise things. Usually."
We laughed. Nathan played around in the water, the flour coming off as we scrubbed his body. He wiggled his fingers at me as I soaped his hair. "Hi, Auntie."
"Hi, Nate!" I cooed. "You're a big boy now, aren't you?"
He put his fists in the air. "Big boy!" He splashed, spraying Sabrina and me.
"Congratulations again, by the way, Daph," Sabrina said, smiling at me. "It's kind of nice but sad to be over with high school, isn't it?"
"Thanks," I said, feeling really happy to have a sister like Sabrina. "And yeah, it is." I wouldn't admit to her my crying fest at Jackson's party. But she probably would've guessed it anyways.
"I felt the same way. Though I've never had to hide a relationship until graduation." She smirked. "Happy you can finally go out in public with Mustardseed?" Pausing, she said, "Sorry, I'm used to calling him Mustardseed and not Matt."
"I don't think he minds. I think he likes both names." I washed Nathan's hair with water after I finished soaping. "And yeah, I really am happy with Matt."
"Good. And you two better stay together or else I'm coming after him."
"Didn't you say that last time we saw each other?"
"Yup, and I still mean it."
I laughed. "Okay."
"Nate, you feel clean now?" Sabrina said as she scooped him out of the tub. "Are you shiny and sparkly?"
"Shiny and sparkly!" he agreed, holding his arms out so I could wrap the towel around his waist.
Sabrina put him into my arms. "Do you mind if I go take a shower next? I think I have flour in my ears."
"Haha, yeah, that's fine." I adjusted Nathan in my arms. "Does he have any spare clothes?"
"Yeah, he has a bag by the door. And do you leave any clothes here at Mustardseed's?"
"Yup, I can get you a pair of mine if you need them. You think they'll fit you?"
She nodded. "Positive. You've grown enough that you look like my age."
"That's…scary. But okay."
I left Sabrina in the bathroom and walked back into the kitchen. I heard a chorus of cheers. "Congratulations, Daphne!"
"Oh, hi, everyone!" I said, beaming. Mom, Dad, and Uncle Jake were in the kitchen along with Mrs. White, Charming, and Basil.
Mom jumped up and crushed me into a hug. "My baby is all grown up!"
"Mom, killing me," I wheezed. "Here." I handed Nathan to Mom so I could fetch his clothes.
"Grandma!" Nathan squealed, pushing himself up to give Mom a kiss.
"Well hello Mr. Nathan!" she cooed, pinching his cheeks. "Aren't you a good boy? Who's a good boy?"
"Mom, he's not a dog," Basil muttered, not taking his eyes off his phone.
"Who are you texting?" I asked.
"Jay," he said, his cheeks turning pink.
"Aww!" I said, ruffling his hair. "You guys are so cute."
Before Basil could retort, Mom asked me, "Honey, where are Nathan's clothes?"
"Oh! I'll be right back," I said, leaving the room quickly. Everyone was talking loudly among each other. Gosh, it was a mad house in there!
When I came back, Puck was scrubbing the floor. Half of the kitchen was clean. My dad nodded approvingly at the kneeling, grumbling fairy . "This is an improvement, don't you think, Jake?"
Uncle Jake laughed. "Definitely."
"Congratulations, Daphne!" Ms. White said to me as I dressed Nathan up quickly. When I finished, I turned to her and gave her a big hug. "How do you feel?"
"Great!" I said. "It's so nice to see you and Billy."
"Dof caw me fat," Charming said, his mouth full of food.
"Billy Charming! Don't talk with your mouth full," Mrs. White scolded.
He swallowed. "Sorry. I said, 'Don't call me that.' But this is the best cuisine I've ever tasted in my whole, entire life."
"Those are some strong words, Mr. Charming." I sighed. "And you've probably inflated Matt's ego more than you should have."
"Who's Matt?"
"Me," Matt said. "That's just what I go by when I'm around humans. It's Mustardseed, actually. Thanks for the praise, Billy."
"I'll let that one slide if I can get another one of those divine pancakes of yours," he said. Matt gave him another plate. "Bless you, child."
"I'm pretty sure I'm older than you."
"Touché."
Uncle Jake came over and wrapped his arms around me. "Hey, Pumpkin."
"Uncle Jake!" I pressed my face into his jacket. "It's so good to see you again."
"Same to you. I can't believe you've graduated. You've grown into a beautiful girl, just like your mom." He winked at Mom.
"Flattery won't get you anywhere with me, Jake," Mom remarked as she fed Nathan a bottle of milk.
"I try," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "Hey Kiddo, want to see what I found on my trip to Québec?" He took out a little snow globe. "You turn this knob to whatever weather type you want -rain, snow, sun, etcetera- and shake the globe, and it'll create the weather in wherever you want it to!"
"Really? That's so cool!" I said.
"Yup, and it's for you," he said, handing me the globe. "Just be careful you don't use it for too long. You might accidentally create a blizzard, floods, and really bad heat rays."
"Okay then, thanks, Uncle Jake!" I said as he carefully handed me the snow globe. "What happens if I drop it?"
He stared at me. "You don't want to know."
"Okay then, everyone," Matt called out. "Everyone into the living room –except Puck. We'll all eat breakfast there. Mr. Grimm, would you mind helping me pass out the plates?"
"Sure, no problem."
I smiled at everyone. This was a great surprise. It was honestly really nice to be surrounded by my family and Everafters. I looked at Matt who was chuckling at one of Uncle Jake's jokes and my smile grew. I think he was enjoying this, too.
"Psst. Daphne."
I looked towards the hallway and saw Sabrina hiding behind one of the plants. "What are you doing?"
"Hello." She gestured to herself. "My clothes?"
My face burned. "I forgot, I'm sorry! Wait, did you already take a shower?"
"Yeah; I thought you were going to come back right after you dressed Nathan, but you didn't. So I went ahead and took a shower. Not my brightest idea." She tightened the towel she was wearing around her. "Could you get my clothes quickly? I don't really want to flash anything to anyone."
"I'll be right back," I promised. Going back through the kitchen, I bumped into Puck.
"Oh good. Marshmallow, do you know where the bathroom is? All this work is making me work up a sweat if you know what I mean."
I wrinkled my nose. "You make everything sound disgusting, Puck. The bathroom is down the hall and the first door on the left. And don't do anything weird to Sabrina –I'll be right back!"
I didn't catch the confused expression on Puck's face as I went into Matt's room and found a spare pair of jeans and a blue blouse. I decided to grab Sabrina a comb too. When I came back, Puck had Sabrina against the wall, kissing her deeply. When Sabrina saw me, she pulled away gasping, her face as red as a stop light. She slapped Puck in the face. "Stupid!"
"Goodness gracious, Puck! I leave for two seconds and you've already jumped her!" I shouted, my mind now completely scarred. "I said not to do anything weird to her!"
"I'm not doing anything weird –I'm showing my love for her, duh. And besides, I couldn't resist my wife in nothing but a towel," he winked.
I wrinkled my nose about to open my mouth.
"And you can't say my brother hasn't done so before."
"Not in just a towel!" My face burned.
"Stark naked?"
"Puck!" Sabrina and I shouted, knocking him on the head.
I pushed the clothes towards Sabrina. "Go put these on before Puck tries anything again." I shoved her towards the bathroom.
"Aw, I was having fun," Puck pouted.
Ding! The doorbell rang. I said to Puck, "Well you can go have fun finishing the rest of the kitchen. And get the door, please."
"Aye, aye, captain."
Matt bumped his shoulder purposefully into Puck's. "What did you do this time?"
"Nothing!" he said innocently. "I'm just on my way to open the door. Nothing weird about that, is there, Daphne?"
"Oh stop it and leave." I shooed him out of the hallway.
"He did something violating, didn't he?" Matt asked as he handed me a plate of pancakes with waffle fries.
"Oh yes," I said before taking a huge bite. I sighed. "Your food always makes me feel better."
He laughed, kissing my hair. "Isn't that a rule for food in general?"
"Your food always makes me feel best?"
"You know it." He smirked.
I dramatically sighed. "Your ego's much bigger than it needs to be."
"You can thank Charming. I don't think he's ever praised anyone as much as me before today."
"Probably. Except Snow."
He grinned, putting a strand of hair behind my ear. "I don't really want to go back out there."
"Why?"
"They're too loud. Especially Nathan." He wrinkled his nose.
"You're lying! You love Nathan!"
"How would you know that?"
"Remember that time we babysat him? C'mon, you love him."
"All right, all right. Still," he pressed his lips to mine. "I'd rather stay here with you."
I blushed. "Well you can still be with me out there. We don't have to hide anymore, remember?"
He smiled. "Right."
"Well look who it is!" Puck shouted. "You again! I take it you want another round of super ultra-mega snowball fighting? No snowplows this time!"
Matt and I glanced at each other. "We better go see who it is, though I have I feeling I already know who."
"That makes me want to go out there even less."
When Sage was in our peripheral vision, he looked hurt. "You didn't tell me you were having a party!"
"We didn't know we were having one until Puck woke us up," I said laughing.
"I feel rejected," he whimpered.
"Good," Matt said.
"Matt," I lighted slapped him. "Be nice."
"Fine. 'Not good'."
"Ha ha. When did you get a sense of humor, huh, Matt?" Sage nudged my boyfriend. "Could it possibly have to do with a little something-something that happened last night?"
Puck looked at me with a smirk as I blushed. "We didn't do anything last night, Sage."
"But you did do something the night before then, right?" He tapped his chin. "I remember talking about this at your graduation…"
"Sage, shut up!" I clamped my hands over my burning red ears.
"Sage!" A voice said. "It's nice to see you again!"
"Ah, Sabrina!" Sage said charmingly as he gave my clothed sister a hug. "Same to you! How've you been?"
"Great! Oh, have you seen my son yet? He'd love to meet you!"
Puck pouted as he glanced at my sister. "I liked you better when you were just in a towel."
"Shut up, Puck. Oh where's Nate? Hey Nate! Meet Daphne's friend, Sage! Say hi!" Sabrina cooed at her son who wiggled his fingers at Sage.
Puck dropped his shoulders. "I've been placed on the back burner."
I smiled sympathetically at my brother-in-law. "You could always challenge Sage to another snowball fight?"
He punched his fist upwards. "Sage, I challenge you to a snowball fight! If I win, you give me my wife back!"
"Bring it on, donkey kong! I've got something better than a snowplow!"
"Let's go, buddy-"
"Let's back up a second, Puck," Matt said, smirking. "Why don't you finish cleaning up the kitchen?"
Puck snapped his fingers. "Damn. I was hoping you'd forget about that."
"Sage. Go help him."
"Why me?"
"Because I don't like you."
"That's a terrible reason!"
"Fine. Because it's my house and I say so."
"I can't decide if I liked you better before or after Daphne graduated," he muttered.
Ignoring Sage, he said, "There are some pancakes in the kitchen, if you want them, Sabrina."
"Thanks, Mustardseed!" she said before going into the kitchen. I heard her say, "Puck, you better not violate me again."
"I promise to wait until we get home."
Sage huffed. "Glad to know I'm loved in this house."
Before he could stomp off into the kitchen, I nudged Matt. He sighed, glumly saying, "I'll make you some breakfast, too, Sage."
Sage's face immediately brightened, and he jumped on Matt. "I knew you loved me! "
"Get off!" Matt struggled to pull the brunette off him. "Go clean up, now!"
Sage rushed into the kitchen with a gleeful laugh.
Matt sighed. "That kid…" He saw me looking at me and offered me a half smile.
I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck. His arms automatically went around my waist.
"You know, when we get married, he'll probably be the best man, right?"
"Or Puck. Though I don't think I like either choice."
I giggled again, pressing my lips against his again.
Crash! We heard Sabrina shouting in the kitchen, and Puck and Sage laughing like mad men.
"Who should I kill first?" he asked himself in a surprisingly calm manner.
I couldn't hold back the laugh I was containing. "Whoever you see first when you walk in."
He pretended to think about it. "Sounds about right. Hey, could you close the door? Puck forgot to close it when he let Sage in. Idiots."
"Sure," I said with a grin.
"Join me in the living room when you're done, okay? I think everyone wants to go visit Faerie for lunch."
"Oooh, that sounds gravy!" My eyes lit up.
He smiled at me. "I wonder what the Everafters will think when they see us."
"Well, it won't exactly matter, will it?" I squeezed his hand. "We're together, and that's all that does, right?"
"Right." His eyes softened. "I love you, Daphne."
"I love you too, Mustardseed." I had never seen his smile bigger before that moment.
I went over to the door, looking outside as I did. The leaves were rustling, and a light breeze was passing through. I breathed, really glad how things turned out in the end.
With happy thoughts in my mind, I closed the door, the lock clicking slowly in place.
The End.
A/N. I'm actually really liking this ending line. :3 A lot. Now that I see it, the epilogue seems a bit too long, haha. Hope you guys enjoyed though!
And no one found the "And I didn't mind one bit" line! But that's okay, my mind's recollection was slightly off. It was the ending to Daphne's Distraction: "Even if it was distracting, she never said she didn't like it." It's similar if you think about it, but none of the words were actually the same, haha. But thanks to those who tried to find it! That just made my day! :D
