A/N: My first fic. Inspired after listening to Florence + the Machine's "Never Let Me Go" and going through conformityissuicide's awesome Tumblr. McDanno one-shot. Thanks for reading and let me know what you think!
Disclaimer: Not making any money off of this. The beautiful men of Hawaii Five-0 sadly don't belong to me (or else McDanno would be completely canon).
"Rush of Devotion"
"Stay with me Danno," Steve softly whispered into my ear.
Water surrounded me as I tried to fight back, tried to get even a single breath into my lungs as I went under.
I could feel his arm around me, holding tightly as the taste and smell of salt invaded my senses. Everything around me felt muted, with only Steve to anchor me in consciousness. Slowly the sounds of flesh hitting water reached me just as pain began to blossom across my chest.
Shouts were everywhere, but I heard nothing, just the all consuming rush of silence. The urge to push back was all for naught as darkness took me and I had no choice but to give in.
"Steve…" I mumbled, not even sure it came out as anything more than a garbled mess.
He slows just the slightest as my eyes crack open only to quickly close them again from the bright sunlight reflecting off of the water. A second, a minute, or it could have been an hour later, I vaguely hear him tell me "it's okay… I've got you, just hold on a little longer… come on Danny, we're almost there".
There's something in his voice that I haven't heard before, like he's lost and desperately trying to stay strong. It's absurd because this is Super Seal we're talking about here and he's never sounded like this through all of the shit we've experienced.
Hands grabbed at him, pulling at his arms and legs, voices blurred in and out. Darkness called once more.
This time, it wasn't the sounds or smells of the ocean that I wake to. Soft snores I'd know anywhere tingle across my ears while a rough but familiar hand grasps one of my own. I must've made a sound or shifted a little because the next thing I know his eyes, dark and intense, opened and met mine.
Silence fills the room even as he stands and leans over me, never letting my hand go. His other gently cups my face.
He stares at me. His own haggard face, filled with an emotion I've only recently come to know, tells me everything. Too close a call, too close.
More emotions crash upon us, but I can do nothing except squeeze his hand just a little tighter with whatever strength I have left, trying to let him know as well… I wasn't going anywhere and Danno loves him.
