He had really loved Rose. Truly and fully. Then he met River Song.

A woman who could best him, a woman who was perfect for him. He knew that he could love her with both his hearts, like a Time Lord should love, and that she would love him back just as much. The second she whispered his name he knew. Even though he could not feel it, he knew she would probably be the love of his entire life.

Letting Rose go off with his clone, his human clone, would have been unbearable if he hadn't met River. No, if he hadn't met River, he would have taken Rose with him no matter the consequences, but now he knew. He knew he would find River Song. It scared him to hell, she scared him to hell, but knowing that a woman like that with a love like that was waiting lent him strength to do what was right.

He let one love go to provide space for the love. Even though he knew she would die, he knew that everything would be worth it. Just that love, and those eyes of hers that knew him better than anyone. He wanted that love and that was why he let Rose go. River Song was the one.

One day when he looked back on his decision he knew that he was right. Her love, their love, surpassed anything he could ever have with anyone else.
