Jim Hawkins loved to fly.

Simple as that.

He loved the height, loved the speed, loved the wind in his face. He loved the way it made him feel free.

He had been obsessed with flying long before he actually did it. When he was just a little kid, he read all the story books, saw all the winged ships, and decided that that was what he wanted to do. And as he outgrew paper wings and jumping with umbrellas and pretend games, he decided to finally put his dream in action, and soon he had it—his very own solar surfer.

Granted, it was a little makeshift at first, but over time Jim got better and smarter and it improved. Soon enough, it handled like a dream, and could fly as high and fast as any bird. He had never been so proud of anything in his life, and not even his father's silence in the matter could change that. But at first, that's all it was—a little plaything that carried no meaning, a toy useless in all regards other than the fact that it made for an amusing pastime.

But then came the day that he left.

And it became so much more than that.

It was his escape, an object in which he could pour all of his rage and regret and why did he leave me's into sheer speed and height. It was a window of opportunity, for trouble, to impress cronies, to impress girls. No matter how many times the surfer got taken away, no matter how many times the threat of juvenile hall was thrown in his face, he just wouldn't, just couldn't stop, because flying was just about all he had left.

So many people watched him, watched that formerly sweet, doe-eyed boy rip about the clouds, eyes masked in shadows and looking like he intended to kill. So many people whispered about him: "He's nothing but trouble, nothing but a bad influence."

Nothing...

And Jim Hawkins knew that his surfer was the source of any hope he dared to even keep, because when he flew so high, high into the air, he knew he was mere feet from heaven.

Honestly, that was as close as he was ever going to get.
